I hope I don't regret my recent purchase of a Roku 2 HD, which hasn't yet even arrived.

Oooh, another shiny box with a remote control to sit next to my TV! How have I lived without one of these things for so long?

Anyone getting this should look at the "Remote for Roku" iphone app as a worthy companion, for those days when you cant find the damn remote or your wife wont let you have it (pun intended).

With Logitech Revue's selling for $99 at Compusa and other venues, the older Roku's are not as much of a value as they used to be. That being said it is still a great media streamer and is a bit easier to use and a lot easier to setup than the Revue. The Roku interface is great for Moms, grandparents, and those who are a bit tech unsavvy.

Last generation Roku, the number of channels are limited compared to the newer version, but at least this one has the USB port on it.

All in all, if you have an Amazon Prime and/or Netflix subscription, it's a great method of utilizing these on a regular tv. Fantastic for those who are technically challenged. Techies should just buy a used laptop (or use an older one) to hook up to their tv.

No, it doesn't play avi files (mp4 works.)

I have one and love it. Streaming free Amazon Prime stuff and many others. Do yourself a favor though -throw away the comp cables in case you are inspired to use them. Stick with HDMI and you won't go wrong.

It's not really THAT shiny.

These are really nice to take to a hotel that has free wifi. I went on a long vacation and a couple days we didn't feel like going out or spending any more money so we hooked up our roku box and watched a few movies for free.

Does anyone know if has a browser to surf the internet? Or are you stuck with whatever website/companies Roku has an agreement with?

For those of us that don't let our phone tell us what we can do - RFI is the Android app for Roku, free in the market. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.exavore.rokumote&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5leGF2b3JlLnJva3Vtb3RlIl0.

Has a lot of mixed reviews. Most of the cons refer to bad tech support and that they use a 3.5mm jack for component video. Most of the pros say there is a wide variety and it's easy to set up.

A lot to work from on CNet...

You can't surf the net on these things. It is simply a media device. The closet you can come is some of the channels, like break.com or a few media serve channels.

Just browsing? This device isn't going to provide your need.

I'm always leery of refurbished products when they don't have full warranties. What's the likelihood this will be ok/or fail right after the 90 days?

I just got a Roku 2 HD and enjoy it. Went with a cheaper one to test to see if the Roku platform is something I really wanted to stick with. Happy with it so far. Got all the normal channels and then I added the PlayOn Media Server so got a lil of everything now.

Here is a list of supported channels for the Roku. Having only heard about this, I figured it was just another Netflix streaming box. Turns out it does a lot more.

*Edit - wow, why I have not bought one of these already? It even has NHL Gamecenter Live

My experience over all on refurbished products, or actually electronic products in general, is that they are likely to fail within 90 days or not at all.

Get the Logitech Revue if you want a device like this but also has a full web browser (Chrome), runs on Android, and can control other devices (A/.V Receiver, Cable / Sat Box, etc).

nah, you did just fine ~ here is a very good comparison chart of the roku line:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roku

i have a 1st generation, i mean 1st, like the n1000 and it works fine ~ the ONLY thing i would trade for is the CC which is available on the roku 2 models as they use different firmware than the '1' models.

enjoy ~ it's a great box and especially handy when going on vacation, if the hotel/motel has wifi...

As KingU stated, it does have a USB port and it is shown in the main picture. HOWEVER, take a look at the embedded video and you will see that it explains all of the ports, including the USB port. I think I might just have to buy one of these bad boys.

Appears to be about half the price of a new one. If I wasn't broke I'd be a player.

Thanks for reinforcement.

I didn't know about the Bluetooth and availability of Android remotes, either. I went through a great deal of research and indecision over buying it, surprising for a device so cheap compared to what it does. After ordering, I realized I'll likely gift it, because it cannot improve on my current HTPC setup (now see why I wasn't sure whether to buy?).

Hotel/travel idea is GREAT, by the way. Maybe I will need to hang onto it. The thing is small enough to not make this a pain, too.

Love love love the Roku! This baby is awesome, I may even cut my cable tv out for this! I also have a Roku radio Tuner which is the bomb diggity (although my Sony Dash is still my favorite for streaming Pandora;) Don't get me started on all my wi-fi net toys! ;)

The best thing you can spend 65 dollars on. Hands down the best purchase of the year for me. Enjoy your Roku!

I'm Bryan. Nice to meet you, Wooter.

I bought this model about a year ago on Woot and couldn't be happier-so much so that I cancelled cable TV and bought a second Roku at full retail for another TV set. I was getting really tired of only really watching about 5 channels on cable and suffering the same movies repeated over and over, even during a single weekend. Between Netflix streaming, various free channels offered with Roku, and a TV antenna, I figure I match about 90% of what I was getting out of basic cable at a fraction of the price.
In terms of perfomance, I'm pretty satisfied. Wireless connection with a moderate speed internet connection and a fairly old modem and router and I literally cannot discern the difference in picture quality between a Netflix stream and a cable program.
I don't know about other streaming devices, but the Roku seems like an economical way to at least be introduced to the technology.

Alright...so what's the better deal?

Here on woot XDS for $64.99 (with shipping), refurb

or

from the roku website, the roku 2 for $49.99 (free shipping and coupon), new?

There's a handy chart on roku's website... apparently 1080p, a usb port, and some type of better remote...

?

Roku boxes are for streaming media via the internet, but you cannot surf the net with this device. There are a number of free channels offered so you don't even have to subscribe to anything to use it.

A subscription to Netflix (about $8/mo) brings you loads of new movies and TV series at a very reasonable price. Amazon Prime members get lots of free movies and TV series as a benefit of their $79/yr. membership, and Amazon is adding titles almost daily. You can also "rent" or buy movies from Amazon and access them on your Roku.

If you have an HDTV, definitely invest in an HDMI cable for the best picture.

I have a Roku box on every TV in the house. Because of this, I was able to cut my cable service down to basic without any complaints from the family.

Ditched my cable 2 weeks ago, got Roku 2 and antenna for local channels. Subscribed to netflix, saving $100 a month. May order this one for tv in bedroom.
