If I were as happy as you say you are with a macbook air, I would not spend my time reading the comments on a PC I don't want.

That's not entirely true.

A high capacity 5400RPM drive can perform more quickly for sequential access than a low capacity 7200RPM drive, because the higher areal density makes up for the difference in rotational speed. It's highly dependent on the specific drive though, i.e. a 2TB drive with 4 platters has lower areal density than a 2TB drive with 3 platters.

I don't own one (can't remember ever owning an Apple product), but I agree. The iPad is a powerful tool with no competitor in some areas. A Navy pilot buddy of mine was just issued an ipad to take with him on flights as the co-pilot in an F-18. It uses some pretty complex topographical maps and maps travel routes and nearest airports (among other uses)...

As for this product. Seems a bit pricy, for what you're getting and other refurb options available. When comparing to new prices it is easy to find savings though.

Do not buy Samsung.

I'm sorry I didn't check out Woot earlier today to warn people off of Samsung, but I spent last night and most of today dealing with a malfunctioning/nonfunctioning Samsung RC512 which I bought here last Nov.

Since Nov I have experienced blue screens and freezing several times a week but not often enought to do anything. Then the trackpad ceased functioning. I tried the usual, windows retore re-installing trackpad software with no results. I called Samsung support. I will never deal with them again.
Too much occurred to write about but they have no interest in supporting these products - no second level support - no supervisorory staff to assist.

I followed the advice of one agent to use the Samsung basic recovery program and was worse off then before.

I'm sending it back if I can - but since it is a refur I don't know if they will take it.

Avoid the frustration - don't buy Samsung

Never thought I'd see MY laptop on Woot! Although I did get mine for a deal as well. While not refurbished, I got mine new at Best Buy on Black Friday for $800. I have to say, it left me flat broke, but it was worth it. Here are my pros and cons:

I use my laptop for:
-gaming
-school work
-some design work
-internet browsing
-video streaming
-music

Pros:
-Fast startup
-numpad
-sleek design
-very nice trackpad (with multitouch)
-quiet
-stays cool under normal circumstances
-small screen bezel
-nice quality screen
-hdmi
-vacuum drive
-great laptop graphics card for gaming
-excellent battery life

Cons:
-No backlit keyboard
-screen is very thin....I am always scared I am going to break it.
-the edge of the laptop where you would rest your wrist while using the trackpad can be kind of sharp especially if you lean into it hard enough.

I also highly recommend this etsy shop for new laptops.... http://www.etsy.com/shop/GlueJunkie?ref=seller_info

Isn't it a big assumption to say that since your laptop was faulty that means all of the laptops made by that company are faulty?

I had a bad experience with Samsung customer support. I waiting 5 weeks to get the laptop repaired and finally told them to just send it back. Luckily Woot is a stand up company and gave me a refund. I won't buy anything from samsung again if I can help it.

Getting OSX on it might be harder, but Ubuntu should run great on it. It's my top choice OS.

As with ANY electronics manufacturer you will get a dud in 100,000. Some companies are worse then others but I've had a Samsung netbook that I've beat up and installed multiple partitions and operating systems on and its still running two years in a row.

As to the support, practically every company lacks in support. Just the nature of the beast. Even apples vaunted support has sucked really bad the last 10 times I've had to call them for friends iPhones (I do all the tech suprt for everyone I know...).

Thanks for backing me up here. Its true, many of the larger 5400 RPM drives outperform the smaller 7200RPM drives, and are MUCH faster than the older smaller 5400 RPM drives that many complain about being so slow. As my original post stated, without knowing which (likely Samsung) model drive is in this we can't tell for sure how fast this one is.

If you really want a great performance increase, get a SSD drive. Going from a larger 5400 to same size 7200 drive usually doesn't give the same considerable performance increase that it used to with the smaller drives.

Yea, I'm grabbing a couple of Win7 copies when they go on clearance and then I will install on any PC I buy again for a couple of years. Most likely after that will go to Ubuntu and OSX, even though I don't like Apple, Win8 is even worse. I run Ubuntu on my netbook even though it came with windows 7.

It’s time for another round of Woot! Clue! to guess the next product up for sale.

NO CLUE! Ya’ll are just too good. I’m gonna try starting it with no clue!

You’ll need the brand name and item to be correct. Remember to give COMPLETE answers.

Style is 20 Questions. Ask Yes/No questions and I'll answer. Two question limit per post.

Most often the answer requires the manufacturer, name, model, size, or other pertinent information for the product.

ELIGIBILITY: Everyone plays. You can be the correct guess once a week. You can play all the time but only guess if you are eligible, please. Share the fun!

INFO: Join us at about an hour before the next sale launches (11pm CST) for a game of Woot!
Clue! where y’all try to guess the next product that will be for sale on a Woot site. The game ends at 11:55pm before RSS feeds and Tweets go out about the sales.

We’ll play this for M-F sales which means late Sunday night for the Monday product through late Thursday night for the Friday product. We will not play on Friday and Saturday nights because heck, too many of you have lives!

The game will move around but you can always find it by checking the Quality Posts on the Woot! main page (Discussion box). It will always be announced there.

UPDATE: Wow! New record! Congrats to jsoko and thumperchick!

REMINDER
We take a break now until an hour before Monday's sale (Sunday 11pm CST). See ya then!!!
