Turken wrote:Hrmmm. this could be interesting. Somewhat on a whim, I threw my resume in the ring last week for a job opening with a company just down the street from home, and they want a phone interview! Could be a good career move, but leaves a LOT of questions. I've never just up and changed jobs before, and don't want to leave the folks here in the lurch if I do get an offer with this other prospect. Suppose I should just take this one step at a time and see how the interview goes first?

A good idea; but any career decisions should be based on what's best for you and yours - not the company you may leave.

Besides, they're always welcome to counter-offer to keep you!!

FWIW, the final report on a 7ish-year-long project is due by the end of June, and I'm the last person here that has any clue what actually happened for the last three of those years. So jumping ship without finishing (even though writing this thing is a royal PIA) would leave my boss hanging in a way that I'd feel really really bad about, particularly since he was the one that got me this job (and my grad school thesis topic) to begin with.

dunno how they would take it, but mabe during interview you could inquire if they could wait until end of june for you to change jorbs. it's only two months away.

And in other news: in a move of complete idiocy, Hulu says they're in the process of adding an authentication scheme so that you have to prove you're a paying cable subscriber to use their streaming service? ummm... yeah, good luck with that. Not that I watched much of their content to begin with, but if that's how they want to play, I'll gladly spend ALL my entertainment time (and money) elsewhere!

Naturally people did in those days, but they "went away to visit Aunt so&so, or took a trip to Europe, or went to private school, etc. Nobody kept the baby in those days in my little New England village. My goodness, times sure have changed!

You have been in grade school for me. Highly unlikely.

Well, another day has passed and I didn't use algebra once.

Tomorrow is May 1st, because tomorrow I will have a 5 year old girl. And that's the only reason the calendar will change the day and it's has to go through her if it has any thoughts otherwise.

Orc got the job about a week ago. It's part-time, but salary, however that works. It's in the liberal blue state next door as opposed to the flaming red state we live in so they have all these health insurance rules we don't have. Hence why it should be good - get the details next Monday. He's doing IT support for a research department at the other university.

I understand how you feel. Everyone tells me that's not the way it's done anymore and if you move on you move on and that's normal. I don't like leaving a place in the lurch either, but it's better than overstaying (I did that once too). Good luck with the interview. I'd ask if it's possible for you to wrap your current project if you really want to do that.

Well now that I think about it, my boyfriend did have a camera, I wonder what ever happened to that, probably all out of focus kid pics though.

I use hulu so that I don't have to pay for cable. Why would I pay for hulu and cable? This makes no sense, are you sure about that? Hulu is owned by ota broadcast channels.

Still single, can't imagine why.

three of the joint owners of hulu are nbcuniversal, fox entertainment (newscorp) and disney, which all have strong cable tv presences. (comcast owns 51% of nbcuniversal.)

which part?

from wikipedia:

"NBC Universal was formed in May 2004 by the merger of General Electric's NBC with Vivendi's Vivendi Universal Entertainment. GE and US cable TV operator Comcast announced a buyout agreement for the company on December 3, 2009. Following regulatory approvals, the transaction completed on January 28, 2011. Comcast now owns 51% of NBC Universal while GE owns 49%."

I've heard lots of talk of this and many of the individual online network sites do require a "cable number". I am with you on the not wasting valuable resources on cable - especially since I watch very little TV and for noise I can watch PBS most of the time. There is still this huge thing especially at Fox et al, that live TV is the only profitable TV and if people don't watch it right when it's aired in it's assigned time slot, they are somehow losing money to a competitor, not what I think is more likely the case, people aren't watching TV at all during what used to be "must see" hours because they went and found a life, or facebook, or god forbid read a book instead. That's also why there are such ridiculously long delays on some shows before they get aired on Hulu.
