Figures, it is suppose to be cloudy here.

Isn't sat the largest moon of the year? Full moon and moon closest in its orbit to the earth. I read it somewhere.

Yeah, I have a note on my calender to let the kids stay up to see it.... if the clouds move.

Best time will be right as it rises rather than at the moment of actual 'full moon'.

good to note. Here it will probably be pretty close to the same time. I have full moon happening at 8:20 local time according to my calendar.

That is when it is usually the biggest. I think I read that in ny it will be biggest at 11 something at night.
That didn't make sense.

That's when it's closest to the earth. It looks biggest at moon rise due to the atmosphere distorting it. Since it really will be closer, it will look even bigger than usually, even though it will be marginally closer to the earth later on.

Good point! Fortunately for us, moon rise is a little closer to the actual event. Still it should be fun, if the clouds go away. Every time there has been something I want to take the kids out to see it's raining or overcast, lately.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moon_illusion#Proof_of_illusion

"A popular belief, stretching back at least to Aristotle in the 4th century B.C., holds that the Moon appears larger near the horizon due to a real magnification effect caused by the Earth's atmosphere. This is not true: although the atmosphere does change the perceived color of the Moon, it does not magnify or enlarge it. In fact, the Moon appears about 1.5% smaller when it is near the horizon than when it is high in the sky, because it is farther away by up to one Earth radius and also because of atmospheric refraction, which makes the image of the Moon slightly smaller in the vertical direction. "

http://science.howstuffworks.com/question491.htm

"Some have speculated that there is some effect that causes the atmosphere to act like a magnifying glass making the moon look bigger. It turns out that any distortion caused by the atmosphere would actually make the moon look a little smaller."

Your brain does a funny thing when items are near other objects in your visual field. It makes them seem to be larger while you are looking at them. If you take a photo, and measure, you discover they aren't bigger at all. they just look bigger.*

*I don't have any source for this, just my memory, but I'm close to right if not exactly so.

Ok, so.... big moon, not long after dark if you are on the West Coast, may or may not look to us to be bigger than our early to bed East Coast friends saw, or something. Either way, if the clouds clear take the kids and look at big supermoon!

Relativity.

Like Joe said, when juxtaposed near objects of known size (e.g. Trees, not ROUSes) the moon looks huge. Alone in the dark, it does not.

Hi all. Getting ready to go out to eat with m-i-l and s-i-l and then, hopefully, cross your fingers, getting a wig for m-i-l. The last 15 years or so, she's been very vain about her hair, has it done every two weeks, but the last year or so it's getting thinner and thinner. I really hope this works. She's battled depression a couple of times before and I'm worried that it might happen again.

Well, you are no fun.

Now we have to assume this is something that has been going on since the house was built. Builder said he fixed it. Didn't. Now there is all sorts of water related bad stuff that needs crazy expensive repairs.

Or not.
