No thanks, Apple.

I purchased an 8GB 4th gen from Woot! back in June, and while it still works fine, it arrived with a very scratched/scuffed back. Based on this alone I would not purchase a refurb ipod from here. Horrible gift-giving experience from my point of view.

I have a 32GB current gen iPod touch and it makes it impossible to justify purchasing an iPad for $300-400 more. It does everything a wifi iPad does, just with a smaller (more portable) scale. It's basically a cheap iPad for those of us who don't need reading glasses.

Camera is just OK on this gen. No flash, but it can do video recording. Hopefully the next gen iPod touch will have the camera from the iPhone 4S....

For $9 more (free shipping but there's tax) you can get an Apple refurb that carries the full 1 year warranty. It beats the Woot price + Square Trade 1 year warranty. Also, with Apple refurbs you can walk into any Apple Store for help and repairs.

While this may seem to be a good deal, the single most important unanswered question is Who Refurbished This iPod? Apple has a very stringent refurbishment process that includes, among other things, a brand-new battery, outer case, and accessories, replace any malfunctioning internal components with genuine Apple replacements, a complete burn-in process performed (again), and a full one-year Apple warranty.

When you purchase an Apple product that was not refurbished by Apple then you are taking the chance that all they did was check to see if it turned on, reset the software, and wiped it down with Windex. And you'd be lucky to get a 30-90 day warranty. The reason why there is such a large third-party aftermarket for refurbhishing Apple products is because there is also a large gray market of Apple products (unauthorized overproduction runs, direct copies by unauthorized manufactuers, etc) that Apple won't cover. Buyer beware if it doesn't come directly from Apple!

I have heard these are often systematically scooped up from pawn shops, etc. Cables are non-Apple, etc. Any confirmation?

For whatever reason, Apple uses a different surface on the screen of the 8gb model from the higher memory iPod's and iPhone. As a result this is a major fingerprint magnet. If having smudges on the screen does not bother you then this is an excellent deal, otherwise I would look at the 32gb model.

I bought an iPod Touch 8GB for basic functionality. I use Skype with an incoming conventional #, but I average one call a week on the Touch.

I have a Verizon Mobile MiFi that I fire up for $10/month when I need mobile connectivity, but there's so much Wifi where I live that I haven't used the MiFi for more than a year.

I'm not a habitual music listener or game player, so I still have 4.5 GB of storage left.

I use the crappy 1 MegaPixel camera to take pictures of stuff I can't see well with my crappy eyes, and things like parking locations, and it has been useful for that.

I did buy a graft-on GPS device for it, and because I use the GPS I'd get an unlocked iPhone (no plan) with the nice camera next time around. Other than that I'm satisfied with the Touch.

The one at Sellout.Woot is 3rd generation; this one is 4th generation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Touch#Models

geredeth wrote:Hrm, so for $75 more, you can get 4x the storage from sellout.woot?

Seems better to spend the money, since expandable storage isn't an option, and the more space you have, the less need to turn to itunes to swap it.

Yeah, $75 is a lot of money, but if you are going to do this, do it right.

Just to say, by the way, as mentioned before about having all the benefits without the cost of a smart phone. I actually was tempted, for a long time to get this. I held off because of Apple, however if you don't have any problems with that, then yeah. You can download software to make calls over Google Voice and wifi, you can do pretty much anything except surf in the middle of nowhere.

So honestly, if you don't want a tablet due to size, this is a pretty good buy if you don't mind Apple products. I would go with the one on sellout though, as opposed to this.

You are wrong. The device may be made with that much storage but the actual usable amount is more like 6.5gb if you are lucky.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2703966?start=0&tstart=0

The point of this device kind of confuses me. You can't expand the memory, and even 8gb only holds a few movies when you are adding apps, and music into the mix- let alone a net of 6.5gb or less net storage. This would have been cool about 10 years ago when that amount of memory seemed like a lot.

Well, all of your national burger joints like McDonald's and Burger King should have them too, as well as the library. You'll probably end up a lot thinner if you use the library.

Hmm, how's life with all those little 12" TVs 'round the house?

I like the Touch for what it does well, but I would not compare the experience to the iPad (I do have both, conspicuous consumer that I am). You might note that the iPad apps are almost always enhanced significantly beyond the iPod/iPhone versions (usually an improved interface that takes advantage of the increased real estate).

Love 'em both, wouldn't compare 'em.

For those worried about the 8 Gig capacity, let me turn you on to (free) Plex:

1. Install the Plex media server wherever you have iTunes installed. It finds all of your music, video, and photos.

2. Install the Plex media player on your iPod touch.

3. Go to MyPlex.com and create an account.

4. Connect to your media server with the PLex app on the iPod Touch. Voila! Access to all of your music, movies, and photos, wherever you have Internet access. Oh, and Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Facebook, etc. too.

You've been able to much more for years with 3rd party apps. Camera+ is $.99 and does a lot more than Apple's app, for instance.

You can do that, regardless. Even if you bought it used. Serious repairs may not happen, but they will work with you for many issues. For free.

Same if you buy from Apple, but your warranty has run out.

That said, I would just buy new from Amazon for a few more dollars. Quite worth it at these prices.

Picked up a new one for Christmas for my kid for $185ish at Target, which also included a $40 gift card. So effectively $145ish because there's always /something/ to buy there

Even the $40 aside, this does not seem like such a deal for a refurb, as a brazillion posters before me have said already.

Even with the usable capacity dipping down to 6.5GB, I couldn't imagine needing anywhere near all of it. Some of us have simpler needs and don't expect a pocket version of our home computer, that's why they make these in a 8GB version to begin with.
If the capacity isn't enough for you, then move on. No need to be holier than thou about it.

These iPod Touches are amazing devices–great display, surprisingly thin and really solid feeling.

I owned one before a Smartphone and they ARE a very good approximation of a Smartphone without the Phone functionality and monthly charges. (You can get text and phone apps but need to be wifi-connected to work). We have 4 of them in our house.

These are tablets but much more compact and portable. Email, YouTube, Skype, Facetime and most of the iPhone apps work on this latest generation model.

What you’ll miss vs Smartphone: no on the road connectivity/calling/texting. Also, there are a lot of great travel/food/GPS/commuting apps that won’t work without a mobile data connection. A work-a-round: if you have a mobile cellular data modem that acts as a wifi hotspot everyone in the car is online. (Still no GPS tho)

'Great kid-tablet, but don’t give them your iTunes Store access($)!

If you’re not loading videos you don’t need more than 8 or 16GB. Still lots of room for apps.

With iOS 5 your battery drains A LOT FASTER !!! On all my iOS Devices (iPad 2, iPhone and iPod) the battery life now sucks. Most significant example, iPad 2 on standby 3 weeks now with new iOS 5, only 3-5 days.
Be aware Apple DOES NOT let you revert to 4.x firmware!

ps: hoping a future update will remedy the problem.
