Haven't quite understood the iPod Touch. Am I right in believing that it is an iPhone without the phone? In what other ways do they differ?

Yes, that is the most concise way of describing the Touch. (To be clear, that also means no cellular data connection or monthly charge. Your Internet connection requires wifi.) See posts above for more comparisons. It is a great device with amazing functionality for being so inexpensive.

So...do we actually get the iPod this time around???

If this is for a kid, it's ok. I didn't buy a iTouch 4 solely because of the camera. It sucked more than the 3GS.

Refurbs are ok. I have a 32gb iTouch 3 refurbed from Woot. It's 2 years old. Still perfect. Been in an otterbox since the day I got it.

You can use TextFree to text for free and you can also buy minutes to use w/ TextFree w/ Voice (or Voicemail) so you can call using the headphones w/ mic. the texting works cross platform. I never did that. I tried skype once but the wifi wasn't full bars and it was a horrible connection. Of course you need wifi to do anything w/ itouch online. I have lots of wifi on Long Island.

I just bought a refurbed iPhone4S thru ATT. Saved $50 and got a 32gb.

No more iTouch for me!

gak0090 wrote:You are wrong. The device may be made with that much storage but the actual usable amount is more like 6.5gb if you are lucky.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2703966?start=0&tstart=0

The point of this device kind of confuses me. You can't expand the memory, and even 8gb only holds a few movies when you are adding apps, and music into the mix- let alone a net of 6.5gb or less net storage. This would have been cool about 10 years ago when that amount of memory seemed like a lot.

There isn't a great need for massive amounts of physical storage with the advent of cloud storage. Apple gives you 5GB of free iCloud storage. If you have an Amazon account you have at least another 5GB. There's dropbox, box.com, etc..

I like the Touch for what it does well, but I would not compare the experience to the iPad (I do have both, conspicuous consumer that I am). You might note that the iPad apps are almost always enhanced significantly beyond the iPod/iPhone versions (usually an improved interface that takes advantage of the increased real estate).

Love 'em both, wouldn't compare 'em.

I completely understand your point and can't argue as I don't have an iPad. All I'm saying is that for me, I haven't been able to value the iPad experience at an additional $300 over the price of the touch. Maybe I'm just cheap and that is why I woot.

i'm still using my ipod touch 8gb 1st gen. Agree with the masses who've written get it from apple's website as a refurb, 1 yr. warranty. It's priced at $164, they update the stock daily so if it's not there it will be just check day to day.

my 1g works perfectly fine, and I have an android phone, but its nice to not wear out my battery. I use my ipod at my desk at work for audiobooks and browsing at lunch... Have lots of apps, 100+ and jailbroken, music and photos and I have never run out of room. If you do run out of room you can delete something on the fly from the ipod and it won't delete it from craptunes, so you can put it back on later.... sharepod for pc is awesome alternative to craptunes.

+1 for all who have mentioned cloud storage

The iPhone isn't a phone either...it's an overpriced iPod Touch that drops calls and requires a data plan and minutes (that are wasted due to the iPhone's crappy performance as a phone).

If you have an Ooma home phone, you can buy the ooma app and make wifi calls with this. Pretty sweet!

I had the same experience. Sad thing was that Woot really didn't care about the condition when I wrote to them about it.

That, or a mini-iPad. I use one for all sorts of things...but not playing iTunes music!

There is even an adapter that lets you plug in pro-type XLR mics with phantom power for high quality audio and apps like Twisted Wave for recording. Lot of word processing, works with a keyboard etc.

There are a ton of photo apps for the iPad and, of course, you can import photos from SD card with the Apple (and other) kits. The USB kit gadget also lets you plug in a real keyboard and even works with USB mics (with some apps).

IPOD has given me nothing but grief. Hate it, all of it. Think this, specifically, is overpriced. BUT I also KNOW I will NEVER, EVER buy another IPOD again. I've had other MP3's that worked MUCH better. I never got an 'error occured -50', but with IPOD I get 400 of those errors. NICE!

Basically, yes. The difference being the camera, which on the iPhone, is better.

Uh...not really. I'm not willing to pay $100/mo for a phone/data plan (and layout another $200 just for the phone to begin with). I have a plain ol' prepaid cell phone for phone calls on the cheap and a 1st gen Touch for everything else.

Apps for all the major services (Kindle, Nook; generic PDF, MOBI, epub; and Apple's iBooks) are available. The only real limitations are memory space and the size of the screen.

It could cause a delivery exception by the shipper and get sent back to us. Email service@woot.com and ask them to make the change. Include the order number. If it's not too late, they'll help you out. If the order has already been processed, they'll let you know your options

Woot and I mean all woot sites, have been really really bad with shipping notifications lately. I never got a notice for the last item I received, but I just now got a notification that my ipod touch has shipped. It shipped out yesterday. Two days before this purchase I bought a tv on deals.woot and haven't received any shipping notifications yet, and I regularly check my account to see if there is any shipping info yet like I did just a couple of hours ago here for this item and there was no info, yet it had already shipped. In the recent past I'd get a shipping notice and then have to wait a day or two for it to actually get shipped.
It's just frikken ridiculous!

Got mine on the 16th. I originally thought it was DOA, but the battery was just drained. It works perfectly, but the screen and even the back become a greasy mess very quickly. And the retina display is almost too good for such a diminutive screen.
Now I want to upgrade my android tablet to an iPad.
