If this is for a kid, it's ok. I didn't buy a iTouch 4 solely because of the camera. It sucked more than the 3GS.
Refurbs are ok. I have a 32gb iTouch 3 refurbed from Woot. It's 2 years old. Still perfect. Been in an otterbox since the day I got it.
You can use TextFree to text for free and you can also buy minutes to use w/ TextFree w/ Voice (or Voicemail) so you can call using the headphones w/ mic. the texting works cross platform. I never did that. I tried skype once but the wifi wasn't full bars and it was a horrible connection. Of course you need wifi to do anything w/ itouch online. I have lots of wifi on Long Island.
I just bought a refurbed iPhone4S thru ATT. Saved $50 and got a 32gb.
No more iTouch for me!

i'm still using my ipod touch 8gb 1st gen. Agree with the masses who've written get it from apple's website as a refurb, 1 yr. warranty. It's priced at $164, they update the stock daily so if it's not there it will be just check day to day.
my 1g works perfectly fine, and I have an android phone, but its nice to not wear out my battery. I use my ipod at my desk at work for audiobooks and browsing at lunch... Have lots of apps, 100+ and jailbroken, music and photos and I have never run out of room. If you do run out of room you can delete something on the fly from the ipod and it won't delete it from craptunes, so you can put it back on later.... sharepod for pc is awesome alternative to craptunes.
+1 for all who have mentioned cloud storage
go official apple at this price
presenting you a subliminal message about the awesome that is sausage

That, or a mini-iPad. I use one for all sorts of things...but not playing iTunes music!
There is even an adapter that lets you plug in pro-type XLR mics with phantom power for high quality audio and apps like Twisted Wave for recording. Lot of word processing, works with a keyboard etc.

There are a ton of photo apps for the iPad and, of course, you can import photos from SD card with the Apple (and other) kits. The USB kit gadget also lets you plug in a real keyboard and even works with USB mics (with some apps).
