I bought this the last time Woot offered it and love using it. The video quality of downloaded HD You Tube videos (yea, you cant download You Tube videos with an i-Pad) are purely amazing. It has so many capabilities over the i-Pad 2 and IMHO, the screen resolution is superior.
I have found that many of these referbs were sent back to the manufacturer because of a specific issue... it won't turn on. There is apparently some kind of software bug that causes it to not turn on at times (I experienced it once). There is information on that on the internet to resolve it (2 fingers on the screen and hold the power button for 15 seconds).

I have the HP Touchpad but it does not function in the classroom (online environment). Hubby and I attend different colleges but neither works on the HP TP. I am not looking for a tablet to root. It should work out of the box (IMO). Thanks!
If the on-line class requires Flash, than this should work. You also the option to install an alternative browser (Opera) via the Android market which offers additional functionality to the browser.

It's either Apple or Samsung ...
I don't have a single Apple product in the house, except the Apple hat I bought when I went over to Apple headquarters in Cupertino.
I did once own a MacIntosh, an Apple all-enclosed black and white personal computer about 25 years ago. After I checked that out I decided to stick with the open system IBM PC and have never looked back.
Apple products do have their places in the world ... for the non-techies of the world who need to get up to speed on technology applications and are very willing to pay for that value added service. Everything you want to run on Apple products will cost extra ... extra this, extra that, an extra arm, an extra leg. Pretty soon Apple will own the world, if not your bank accounts.
I'm a wholesale buyer. I learned that with IBM PC's you can always find a supplier of products or services that's cheaper and better. Not so with Apple products. Their attitude is: we're gods and you're slaves, so be it. IBM PC's are, let's say, more egalitarian.
Yes, I have Samsung android phones, Tabs, Kindle, and even android installed on my, lo and behold, my IBM PC. Yuk, yuk, yuk.
Oh, yeah, why did I buy an Apple hat from Infinity Loop (even that address smacks of Apple arrogance)? Unless Apple figures out a way for me to need to buy an add-on for my hat I feel comfortable that I won't be nickeled and dimed to death to use the hat.

I am new to apple products... but I have not experienced an "extra" cost for software on apple products be it the iPhone or MacBook. They have excellent free software.
But like you said its been 25 years since you've owned something apple. Its not really a big difference between the platforms other then apple has an sustained ecosystem that Android tablets for one are severely lacking. You should check out the app store on someones apple device.... the same apps that are free on android are free on iOS. Two months ago I thought the same thing that I would have to pay for everything on my iPad and MacBook... but it isn't true.
Sorry, in my rant against Apple (LOL) I didn't place the modifier, "most," to have it read: "Most everything you want to run on Apple products will cost extra."
I don't care how you spend your money. I only care of how I spend my money, and for my money I want a lot of value.
Here's a comment on your comment: "... the same apps that are free on android are free on iOS" ... I don't think you have the correct sequence here. I would think that if android hadn't offered it for free, you would find similar products being sold, not given away, for the Apple ecosystem.
What you will find about the items that are offered for free on iOS will lead somewhere along the way for you to pay for something you will need to continue to use those features of the free applications. Of course, this is the same approach with apps for the android OS; but there should be fewers extended choices that cost money. Pure and simple marketing. Give away the printer so you can sell the inkjet cartridges.

I have owned a variety of Android tablets, and currently settled on HTC View. I also owned an iPad 2, recently sold it so I can buy the new iPad on 3/16. Honestly, Android has its advantages, and iOS does as well. The number 1 thing that bothers me about Android is the propensity for its apps to crash. It had always happened on a regular basis, regardless of which Android tabs I owned (Galaxy Tab, gTablet, Thrive, View). In addition, compatibility is a big concern too. But nonetheless, I still really like HTC View's GUI primarily for its HTC Sense.
Galaxy Tab was fine too, and no doubt people would be happy with this Woot. Just be patient with apps crashing.

nerdhen wrote:Thanks for the help on NAS options. How does android work with online backup and storage options like Dropbox?
I use Dropbox on my Android Thrive and my laptops, and share content with other users on Mac and PCs. And iPads.
While I like Dropbox better than iCloud (Apple's personal space online solution) because iCloud tries to do too much for you and you can end up with multiple copies of appointments pretty easily, I also have had issues with Dropbox and files being deleted when I did NOT delete them. However, Dropbox has a decent online management app that allows you to undelete things, which saved my hide.
Nothing is perfect, but as long as that is not an expectation of yours, Dropbox is handy and functional.
