I bought this the last time Woot offered it and love using it. The video quality of downloaded HD You Tube videos (yea, you cant download You Tube videos with an i-Pad) are purely amazing. It has so many capabilities over the i-Pad 2 and IMHO, the screen resolution is superior.
I have found that many of these referbs were sent back to the manufacturer because of a specific issue... it won't turn on. There is apparently some kind of software bug that causes it to not turn on at times (I experienced it once). There is information on that on the internet to resolve it (2 fingers on the screen and hold the power button for 15 seconds).

Considering this device to use for online college courses. Does anyone have experience using the Galaxy Tab 10.1" to read and post in the classroom forum? I have the HP Touchpad but it does not function in the classroom (online environment). Hubby and I attend different colleges but neither works on the HP TP. I am not looking for a tablet to root. It should work out of the box (IMO). Thanks!

If the on-line class requires Flash, than this should work. You also the option to install an alternative browser (Opera) via the Android market which offers additional functionality to the browser.

It's either Apple or Samsung ...

I don't have a single Apple product in the house, except the Apple hat I bought when I went over to Apple headquarters in Cupertino.

I did once own a MacIntosh, an Apple all-enclosed black and white personal computer about 25 years ago. After I checked that out I decided to stick with the open system IBM PC and have never looked back.

Apple products do have their places in the world ... for the non-techies of the world who need to get up to speed on technology applications and are very willing to pay for that value added service. Everything you want to run on Apple products will cost extra ... extra this, extra that, an extra arm, an extra leg. Pretty soon Apple will own the world, if not your bank accounts.

I'm a wholesale buyer. I learned that with IBM PC's you can always find a supplier of products or services that's cheaper and better. Not so with Apple products. Their attitude is: we're gods and you're slaves, so be it. IBM PC's are, let's say, more egalitarian.

Yes, I have Samsung android phones, Tabs, Kindle, and even android installed on my, lo and behold, my IBM PC. Yuk, yuk, yuk.

Oh, yeah, why did I buy an Apple hat from Infinity Loop (even that address smacks of Apple arrogance)? Unless Apple figures out a way for me to need to buy an add-on for my hat I feel comfortable that I won't be nickeled and dimed to death to use the hat.

I joined on April 15, 2005, instead of working on my taxes. The hell with taxes.

How do you come to the conclusion that "Everything you want to run on Apple products will cost extra"?

I am new to apple products... but I have not experienced an "extra" cost for software on apple products be it the iPhone or MacBook. They have excellent free software.

But like you said its been 25 years since you've owned something apple. Its not really a big difference between the platforms other then apple has an sustained ecosystem that Android tablets for one are severely lacking. You should check out the app store on someones apple device.... the same apps that are free on android are free on iOS. Two months ago I thought the same thing that I would have to pay for everything on my iPad and MacBook... but it isn't true.

off topic a bit, but how are you contacting Samsung? They are by far the BEST company I've dealt with on product issues.

Flat screen TV made a high pitched whine. Out of warranty, no problem! They sent someone out and they replaced the power supply.

Contact @galaxySsupport on twitter, you will more than likely get a response within 24 hours. I'm sure that handle will also take care of the Tab.

I don't care how you spend your money. I only care of how I spend my money, and for my money I want a lot of value.

Here's a comment on your comment: "... the same apps that are free on android are free on iOS" ... I don't think you have the correct sequence here. I would think that if android hadn't offered it for free, you would find similar products being sold, not given away, for the Apple ecosystem.

What you will find about the items that are offered for free on iOS will lead somewhere along the way for you to pay for something you will need to continue to use those features of the free applications. Of course, this is the same approach with apps for the android OS; but there should be fewers extended choices that cost money. Pure and simple marketing. Give away the printer so you can sell the inkjet cartridges.

We have the Motorola Xoom (thank you Woot!) and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Neither has been rooted (yet). Love both. Xoom has micro-SD, Samsung does not. Samsung comes with USB adapter - very cool. Galaxy will charge over micro-USB, Xoom will not. Samsung has slightly better display according to the specs. Both look awesome. Motorola has ICS, Samsung does not, but that really doesn't matter. Samsung is MUCH lighter than the Xoom. It is soon to be discontinued, so there might be deeper discounts in the near future, but at this point in time, this is a great tablet for the price!

For anyone who wants to buy a tablet and just use it this would fit the bill just fine. I've had 4 Android phones (Nexus One, Evo 4G, Thunderbolt & Galaxy Nexus) and 1 Android tablet (Acer Iconia) and haven't rooted any of them. The OS worked great out of the box. Have not fear. Anyone who buys this Samsung tablet will have a great experience with it...Stock.

I'm not a "hater" and I'm not a "fanboy". I'm a geek. I definitely enjoy the "option" of being able to mess around with my tech. For that reason I don't prefer Apple products. That didn't stop me from getting a MacBook for my wife who could care less about being geeky and wants it to "just work". It did frustrate me when our Airport Extreme router decided to "not just work" and there was no HTML interface to the default gateway. The only way to interact with the hardware was through the Airport Utility software. That's pretty weak and a bit of an arrogant oversight in the networking world. Anyway...I've digressed off-topic. The point was, Android also "Just Works". Buy this tablet and enjoy.

I have owned a variety of Android tablets, and currently settled on HTC View. I also owned an iPad 2, recently sold it so I can buy the new iPad on 3/16. Honestly, Android has its advantages, and iOS does as well. The number 1 thing that bothers me about Android is the propensity for its apps to crash. It had always happened on a regular basis, regardless of which Android tabs I owned (Galaxy Tab, gTablet, Thrive, View). In addition, compatibility is a big concern too. But nonetheless, I still really like HTC View's GUI primarily for its HTC Sense.

Galaxy Tab was fine too, and no doubt people would be happy with this Woot. Just be patient with apps crashing.

I use Dropbox on my Android Thrive and my laptops, and share content with other users on Mac and PCs. And iPads.

While I like Dropbox better than iCloud (Apple's personal space online solution) because iCloud tries to do too much for you and you can end up with multiple copies of appointments pretty easily, I also have had issues with Dropbox and files being deleted when I did NOT delete them. However, Dropbox has a decent online management app that allows you to undelete things, which saved my hide.

Nothing is perfect, but as long as that is not an expectation of yours, Dropbox is handy and functional.

One of my companies develops for the Android tablet platform, and this is one of our official "test devices".

It's robust, with a great screen (we develop for visual creatives, and thus ignore the low-end tablets), and in stock form is already highly usable and speedy. Honeycomb is great.

For those who have an Android phone, you really only need a WiFi tablet. Your phone is your HotSpot, and since the phone is always on you, it's the perfect companion; and you can save on a separate data plan just for your tablet.

I highly recommend this. In fact, two of our developers have "stolen" (well, with my consent) these as their daily users. The other tabs we use to test are from ASUS and Lenovo, plus the Kindle Fire, and they prefer the Samsung to those. Note: we keep them in stock form for testing.

Galaxy Tab= widescreen
iPad (any flavor)= square

That being said, I don't think this is a very good deal. The iPad2 will soon be just a few bucks more NEW, this tab was always priced way too high to catch on.

(I run the ASUS Transformer, myself- no other tablet has a keyboard with additional battery that literally "TRANSFORMS" the device into a small laptop. And USB ports. And SDcard port.)

afrodan wrote:
If you're dumb and need simplicity.... iPad...
If you're smart and don't like restrictions... Galaxy tab!

I've used both, and here is the corrected version:

If you simply want to use a rock-solid product and are smart enouggh to realize that have better things to do with your life than screw around with trying to make a lousy product worthwhile, then get an iPad.

If you're living in your Mom's basement, have no real social life, and think it's "cool" to have to spend hours and hours trying to make a lousy product useful....then you can settle for a Galaxy Tab.

The hackers I know *LOVE* Android...understandably. The real people I know with real jobs and real lives hate it, but love their iPads. I have the technical expertise to be an Android-hacker, but since I have better things to do, I now use an iPad.

And don't forget, ALL Android tablets are essentially obsolete when you buy them.

Why? Because (1) they don't sell a lot of any particular model, (2) each model has slightly different hardware requirements than the other, therefore the Android software (and often the apps, too!) have to be modified to work on each different Android tablet, therefore (3) it simply isn't worthwhile for Samsung, HTC, or whoever to waste time porting Ice Cream Sandwich or Honey-nut Toffee or Butterscotch Brownie (or whatever other inane name Google uses) in order for those few hundred people to be able to upgrade.

Instead, they leave them unsupported in hopes that they'll simply waste money buying *another* obsolete-when-shipped Android tablet.

The smart ones, however, upgrade to an iPad. (Note: The original, two-year-old iPad can still run the latest iPad/iOS software).

Finally, don't be fooled by these "bargain" tablets....statistically, Android tablet apps cost more than iPad tablet apps (often for the same app). Again, since they don't sell as many, the developers have to charge more per app in order to make it worthwhile to produce them. In the long run, you'll spend as much or more on an Android tablet.

Actually, it's mostly Apple Fanboys who come on and start the crap and then cry when they get punched back.

Each operating system has it's pros and cons. If you don't want to mess with it and go with a system that is great ouf of the box, Apple is undeniably probably your best option. If you want to take some time to root your system and personalize it to your likes without killing functionality then there's no question it's android. This crap about Apple has more apps is ridiculous, there are comparable apps on both and a lot more free ones for Android.

Either way, who cares, buy what you want, enjoy it how you would.

I've had my Galaxy Tab for about 6 months and I love it. My kids have iPads, and the interface is pretty, and the software is smooth. But I can't stand the feeling of being locked into iTunes hell!

When I plug in my GT, I see a drive letter. I can load movies, music, ebooks into folders. If I take pictures or video, or if I download a file from the web, I can easily copy it onto my desktop PC. It's like freedom, compared to the the "comprehensive user experience" Apple is selling.

When I surf the web, I can use Flash. I don't have to suffer because Apple doesn't think Flash is any good. So what if they're right - a ton of web sites I go to use it. With my GT I don't have to wonder what those inline embedded videos were about.

The screen looks fantastic. I use Qloud to stream all my video to it. I watch TV with the Slingbox app. I read books with the Nook or Kindle apps, or the Moon Reader which works flawlessly with my Calibre ebook server.

Maybe it's not as pretty as an iPad 2, but I can't imagine life without my Galaxy Tab.

Problems can occur with new products and refurbed products. Warranty is listed on the main Woot page, refurbs generally have less time on the warranty. There is also the Square Trade option, for a 3rd party warranty, also listed on the main Woot page.

From the FAQ's

---------------------------
How do I return a defective product? Unless we specifically tell you not to, call the manufacturer of the product you bought. You will likely get a replacement of a new model or better item from them. If we still haven't dissuaded you, email rma@woot.com with your woot order number, the name of the product you are returning, and the detailed problem with the item. We will respond with return authorization by the next business day. Because we aren't likely to have a replacement in stock, you should be prepared for a refund-only option if that's all we can do. Know that return freight will be at your expense. Again, you will probably get a better deal from the manufacturer, or whoever else handling member service for that product.

I've never been an Apple fanboy, but I did get an Ipad 2 and do love it. I am irritated by its closed system mindset though (as someone previously complained "hopping from app to app to deal with file editing and sharing as well as the inability to download online content on the fly and move it on and off of the iPad.")

I'd like to buy an android-based tablet just to see if it would suit me better, but there is one thing that I just can't give up and that is Apple's iCloud. The ability to sutomatically sync my important stuff between the iCloud and my iPhone and my PC is just too valuable (plus the convenience of getting my updates automatically from the cloud).

Do the Androids (or more specifically this Android) have a similar feature to the iCloud?

I bought the Galaxy Tab 7" refurb from woot sometime last year. I never rooted or anything, basically just played with it stock and read kindle books and downloaded free apps. It worked great for me. I was constantly finding good uses for it and telling myself "What, I can do that, too?"

It was my first tablet, and it was perfect for me. Now I'm upgrading to this one and giving my mother the 7". She likes borrowing mine to look up recipes in the kitchen.

I've seen a lot of comments saying that the 10.1 Galaxy Tab will get ICS. I'm not trying to contradict that but I know I read somewhere recently (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-android-4-0-ics-update-for-galaxy-s-and-tab-now-under-review-27204635/) that it might NOT be getting ICS due to an incompatibility with the custom Samsung Touchwiz interface on the current Tab 10.1...so if ICS is a deal-breaker for you, I'd suggest doing some research rather than relying on what I or anyone else may say. I hope I'm wrong because...

I've got this tablet (from Costco last November) and I've been very happy with it. I haven't done anything but use it stock, and it's been a very solid performer. For me, the biggest advantage is the fact it will run Flash. No more wondering what I'm missing on pages, and no more wondering if my device won't be able to display pages.
