I, literally, saw these at $40 for three a few years ago. This is a great deal.

Woot at one time you had cool stuff, now that Amazon owns you I find it harder to come to you site. Have not bought anything for some time and these stone are worthless like some much you are listing today. Sorry.....

These rocks (soap stones)are worthless! We purchased them (elsewhere)for chilling wine without diluting it. The concept is novel, but that's it. Whatever you do, don't try to use them in the thinner, glassware, like Riedel wine glasses.

Why not just use an insulated mug? That would keep your coffee warmer longer than these stones, which don't hold much heat. The mug is less trouble since it doesn't require separate heating or cleaning.

And if you're by your computer, buy a USB Peltier cup warmer. Woot had one that heats AND cools for about $5.

Yeah, my lab has an ultrafreezer and it's great for flash freezing. I shouldn't admit to this but I once stored frozen food just inches away from HIV specimens... (triple wrapped in lab grade plastic bags, of course, to prevent cross-contamination)

This should be FALSE ADVERTISING....USA my butt...I work at the only operating soapstone quarry (Alberene Soapstone) in the usa and these DID NOT come from the USA(the soapstone, they made have been manufactured here, but by no means are they US materials) Local people here in VA sell real USA soapstone Whiskey stones

The specific heat (cooling capacity) of these things is poor compared to that of ice/water because there is no phase change as there is with melting ice. If you want to chill your stuff without ice melting into it and diluting it use some of those blue-ice packs used in coolers to keep stuff cold or even water ice sealed inside plastic. Someone must make reusable ice cubes. If they don't I will.

Soapstone has a heat capacity of 0.94 J/g-K or 3 J/cc-K if you take the density into account.

So, let's say you cool these to -4 degC and put 1 cubic centimeter's worth into 10 cc of water at 20 degC (roughly room temp).

For every 3 J of heat absorbed from the water, the cubes will increase in temperature by 1 degC.

Water has a heat capacity of 4.184 J/cc-K, so for every 3 J lost to the stones, the liquid temperature will fall by 0.072 degC. The equilibrium point in this case will be at 18.4 degC when the 10 cc of liquid have transferred 67.2 J to the stones, raising their temperature by 22.4 degC. Not much cooling when the stone:liquid ratio is 1:10.

Now do the same thing with 1 cc of -4 degC ice instead of stones. Ice has a heat capacity of 1.932 J/cc-K. It also has an enthalpy of fusion (or melting) of 334 J/g. So, the ice would absorb 7.73 J getting to 0 degC, then absorb another 334 J melting completely. This would bring the liquid temp down to 8.2 degC. The newly formed water is still at 0 degC, so it would bring the net temperature of drink down to 7.5 degC. In conclusion, the ice cools way better that the stones, largely because of the phase change. Of course is also dilutes your liquid by a little - about 10% or so.

Whiskey has a large ethanol component, with a heat capacity of 1.77 J/cc-K. This would mean slightly better cooling with the stones than in the example above, but way better cooling with the ice.

If you want cold with out dilution either chill the glass in the freezer or mix -4 degC spirits with room temp spirits in the ratio that gives you the target temperature you want.

The rocks don't do much thermodynamically.

The best answer.

Gotta love all the posts that constantly show up over and over and over again saying how ice is much better than these rocks.

These aren't supposed to be making your whiskey ice cold. Just slightly chill it.

As for someone needing to make reusable ice cubes... there are tons of those on the market, unless you mean something other than the blue/white ones that you usually see.

I do find it odd that some would ask about / use these in something hot like coffee. I figure a big part of the reason behind them is the appearance.... you'd never see it in your coffee.

CONGRATS TO BarkOLounger on his correct guess yesterday!!!!

It’s time for another round of Woot! Clue! to guess the next product up for sale.

► ► ► ► ► ► GAME CHANGER!!!!! ◄ ◄ ◄ ◄ ◄ ◄

NEW GAME TONIGHT!!!!!

Tonight we play PICTURE CLUE! That’s right, no word clues. AND NO QUESTIONS! Did you hear me!??! You can’t ask questions. You can post guesses. You can talk amongst yourselves. But I won’t answer any questions. I will be reading all your guesses and posts while maniacally, yet gleefully, laughing at your (hopefully feeble) attempts.

The next post will contain all the picture clues. I’ll add a new picture every 5 minutes. Like The Trivial Eye game on World of Woot, I’ll only show you a portion of the item. In some cases, I won’t even show you the item at all!

I may add some of your posts to the picture clues if you’re getting close or y’all are struggling. Maybe. We’ll see how I feel.

So:
• Keep the picture post open in a different tab on your browser and keep checking back to it.
• Ask no questions because I give you no answers.
• Talk amongst yourselves. Help each other.
• Have fun!

Most often the answer requires the manufacturer, name, model, size, or other pertinent information for the product.

ELIGIBILITY: Everyone plays. You can be the correct guess once a week. You can play all the time but only guess if you are eligible, please. Share the fun!

INFO: Join us at about an hour before the next sale launches (11pm CST) for a game of Woot!
Clue! where y’all try to guess the next product that will be for sale on a Woot site. The game ends at 11:55pm before RSS feeds and Tweets go out about the sales.

The game will move around but you can always find it by checking the Quality Posts on the Woot! main page (Discussion box). It will always be announced there.
