I, literally, saw these at $40 for three a few years ago. This is a great deal.

Woot at one time you had cool stuff, now that Amazon owns you I find it harder to come to you site. Have not bought anything for some time and these stone are worthless like some much you are listing today. Sorry.....

These rocks (soap stones)are worthless! We purchased them (elsewhere)for chilling wine without diluting it. The concept is novel, but that's it. Whatever you do, don't try to use them in the thinner, glassware, like Riedel wine glasses.

Why not just use an insulated mug? That would keep your coffee warmer longer than these stones, which don't hold much heat. The mug is less trouble since it doesn't require separate heating or cleaning.

And if you're by your computer, buy a USB Peltier cup warmer. Woot had one that heats AND cools for about $5.

The specific heat (cooling capacity) of these things is poor compared to that of ice/water because there is no phase change as there is with melting ice. If you want to chill your stuff without ice melting into it and diluting it use some of those blue-ice packs used in coolers to keep stuff cold or even water ice sealed inside plastic. Someone must make reusable ice cubes. If they don't I will.

In conclusion, the ice cools way better that the stones, largely because of the phase change. Of course is also dilutes your liquid by a little - about 10% or so.

Whiskey has a large ethanol component, with a heat capacity of 1.77 J/cc-K. This would mean slightly better cooling with the stones than in the example above, but way better cooling with the ice.

If you want cold with out dilution either chill the glass in the freezer or mix -4 degC spirits with room temp spirits in the ratio that gives you the target temperature you want.

The rocks don't do much thermodynamically.

These aren't supposed to be making your whiskey ice cold. Just slightly chill it.


As for someone needing to make reusable ice cubes... there are tons of those on the market, unless you mean something other than the blue/white ones that you usually see.


I do find it odd that some would ask about / use these in something hot like coffee. I figure a big part of the reason behind them is the appearance.... you'd never see it in your coffee.
