If you click the ruby lenses together 3 times and say "There's no place like home", then you have just voided the 90 day warranty.

"Specifically designed for long distance observation"

Dang. Where do I get the binoculars designed for close distance observation?

I'm not keeping track of my Woots, but they average more than one a month, starting with the InFocus 4805 Projector on 06/30/05.

Well, that's kinda the definition of a Wootoff...
Just be thankful that Woot is no longer selling Excalibur stuff. On the other hand, they're now selling Cheeky stuff, which seems like Excalibur under another name.

Hey. Waitaminute.

I bought an Excalibur USB Hard Drive from Woot a few years ago. It was a whopping 4 GIGAbytes!

...I still haven't used it. It's gathering dust in my bedroom against the window.

Anyone actually know anything about binoculars? I've thinking about getting some, but don't know anything about them. I would use them occasionally to look at birds, etc., and also to look up at the stars every now and then. I really wouldn't want to spend more than $30ish for them. Anything out there worth looking at in that range, or should I just get these even though they might not be so great?

I find that a rifle scope works best for that...

Kind of relative. It is still a long distance relative to the size of the target .

Long distance observation as in mountains and such.
Not to forget,a steady set of hands or...a staff to prop and hold still.

20x50 is a ratio of only 3, so you'll only use these in good daylight! minimum ratio recommended is something like 8x50 (6+) or perhaps 10x50 (5). There's a website about it somewhere.. hmmm.. ah, here for bird. you can work it out for your own uses what brightnesses, magnifications and ratios you need form this benchmark, from more of the googles http://web4.audubon.org/bird/at_home/bird_watching/binoculars.shtml

I have a pair of cheap binoculars. Don't remember the brand, but I'm THINKING redhead or somesuch.

The ones I have don't align properly, so I get double vision and headaches when I try to use them.

I'll pass on these. They may be great, but I'm skeptical.

Anyway, the things

Not stupid at all. In addition to a previous poster mentioning the Pentax Papilios, notice that these are 20 x 50. The first number is the magnification, 20 times. This is big. A common size for binocs is 7 x 50. More magnification than that and the image gets shaky without a tripod. At twenty times magnification, these really are for long distance viewing.

I've found binoculars hard to use with eyeglasses on (and pointless with them off).

Any idea how these are with eyeglasses, or some that are good?

I am always very suspicious of binoculars that do not come with a description of the optics. The very best magnifiers will have Fully Multi Coated Optics. This is what you should look for if you are spending good money. These have 20x zoom, and a 50mm diopter, which is actually pretty good, as they will let in a better than fair amount of light, meaning that your eye will be able to discern far away images without straining against darkness. That may change depending on how powerful that ruby tint is though. For 17 bucks, these are probably a good buy though.

Definitely do *not* get these for stargazing. The magnification is too high and the light-gathering ability is too low. For stargazing you want a wide field of view so lower magnification is actually better. You want the largest objective lens you can afford.
