Well, the Track By Reference went live on both mine and wife's shipments! Placeholders so far...

But this could mean one and only one thing!

It's time to post the latest version of my FedEx SmartPost primer. And so here it is:

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
FedEx SmartPost primer for newcomers, and a reminder for the rest of Wooters (v. 1.6.1)

1. Before the tracking information shows up: Sometimes Woot is not e-mailing the tracking numbers until a few days after the packages are shipped. You can try and get the number by reference, by going to https://www.fedex.com/AltRefTracking?cntry_code=us and entering these three things: Your Woot order number goes to reference numbers box, select United States in destination country drop down, and Your Zip Code in a respective box. It's important to get all three pieces. Keep refreshing it, and if you're lucky, the tracking number will pop-up before the official e-mail comes. It doesn't ALWAYS work, but there's a good chance. Note, that if you've made multiple orders from Woot, you can enter several order numbers into the reference box, one per line.

1.1 A small tracking by reference tip: At first when you enter the tracking information your tracking page will be loaded by POST request. That means all data you entered is sent to server through internal fields. Each time you refresh you'd have to agree to repeat the POST operation, and you can't bookmark or transfer the link to another computer/smartphone/etc. However - if you press a purple RESUBMIT button below your results, it will change the request to GET, so that all information you entered will show up in a URL and you can now F5 it as many times as you want without further steps, make bookmarks or e-mail the link to self (or others).

1.2 If your weight shows as 1lb, it is most likely a placeholder, which will be replaced by more accurate weight once the package actually starts moving (or reaches a sorting station - see below). The dimensions will probably show as NA/NA/NA on those placeholder packages. Some people have reported packages showing as 1lb all the way until delivery, but turned out to be anything but, though there's always a slight chance that your package actually is a 1 pounder. So you never know.

1.3 To make it even more frustrating - the actual fact that you can track by reference, but if it shows as a 1lb with status Shipment information sent to FedEx does not yet mean the package actually shipped or even exists. All it means - a label which will eventually be attached to your package has been printed. It may be a few days before your beloved box will actually hit the road. Patience is the key here!

1.4 So how do we know for sure that BоC's are out? Keep looking through this thread, and you may spot a post by colonelcrap or occasionally by another Woot staff member (identified as such by a small icon next to their name), stating that all packages are shipped. Sometimes it will take FedEx a while before they show up or update, but once it's said here on the forum, you can be sure that they are out! Also keep an eye open for updates by colonelcrap and other staff members posts announcing the crаp status changes, possible shipping delays or otherwise!

1.5 Some wooters report being able to track, but not me! Am I screwed? No, you are not. The tracking numbers don't get into the system all at once. The track by reference starts working when FedEx receives your package info from Woot. They send them in batches, and if someone has a reference hit, does not mean everyone gets it at the same time. Sometimes it's days between batches are sent, and sometimes electronic info on some or all packages is not sent at all, which means not trackable by reference until it arrives (even if trackable by actual tracking number received from Woot). The actual tracking information (if you have tracking e-mail sent to you or it shows up on your order page) gets updated as the package is actually scanned at FedEx location. Provided that Woot ships them by truckload, it may not be instant at all, nor they will appear all at once. Sometimes it's not 'til the next day when you see it live, even if there are others that got scanned early in the game. Remember, if colonelcrap said that all packages are out - they are. It may take some time for them to go live, a day or two between first reported trackable package until the last one shows up in a system is not unusual...

2. To get the dimensions you need to create My FedEx account (no charge, and you don't have to give them cc number if you don't want to): http://my.fedex.com/ and make sure to switch to new or advanced version. Enter your tracking number, and the dimensions will pop...

2.1 Another way to get dimensions: If you have problems with My FedEx site, or just to make things easier - you can also download a very convenient FedEx Desktop application. It uses the same log-in credentials as your My FedEx account (you'd still need to have one), and tracks the same packages right from your desktop, without the browser.

3. Don't get too excited. For the first few days most people will probably have some sort of cubed dimensions. This is because in the beginning the dimensions are not real. They are guesstimated by FedEx based on weight (which may or may not be accurate). Here's the famous formula for you to check:

SIDE = ( 330 * WEIGHT ) ^ (1/3)
(side in inches, weight in lbs)

If it matches your dimensions to a few tenths of an inch - you know they are not real. That's for smaller packages. Those over 15lbs would always have the "dimensions" of a 15lbs package (or was it 16)... Again not real...

4. Once your package passed a sorting station - the updated weight and real dimensions may show up. Usually that's the first or second stop it makes after Dallas. In my case (North-East) in either Martinsburg, WV or at Kansas City, KS (I am yet to understand the logic SmartPost uses in sending the packages one route or the other), for many others it's New Berlin, WI or another major SmartPost hub. In some cases actual weighting/measuring may not take place even at the SECOND hub... or ever...

5. USPS Handoff: Once the package is reported to have passed a city near you - start tracking it on http://www.usps.com/, because that's who's delivering it to your door, and once the package is handed over by FedEx, they will have more up to date information. Do make sure that you track by actual tracking number (it will show up if you got a hit with reference tracking), because USPS does not track by reference. A thing to note - when handed over to USPS, FedEx always says a standard "allow 2-3 for business days for delivery". This is a standard message, and if your USPS facility is efficient enough, you may get it delivered as soon as the day of handoff (if it happened early enough).

5.1. USPS is not delivering for a few days after supposed handoff. Compliments go to the budget cuts and staff shortage at your local post office, as per a post by snaped, who claims to know the situation first hand: the pallets of SmartPost packages are handled at the lowest priority, after all other mail has been processed. So if your post office is a bit short on staff or overwhelmed with other mail (holiday seasons especially) it may well sit unsorted for a few days, after which their status is raised to priority and they finally get sorted and delivered. In my personal experience, I've seen them delivered the same day or as much as a full week late (that happened with non-woot package I was expecting around Christmas).

Good luck to all waiting for their hauls, and let the Woot Gods bless you with some amazing crаps!

This is my first woot ever, so obviously my first Bunnies Ogling Carrots . My boyfriend was quite furious when I got one as he's been trying since '09, but later got his first one on the last offering! Two Bunnies Ogling Carrots 's on their way! I've been refreshing this forum all day, I think I've caught the woot bug :P

No email with my tracking number yet, but putting the info into the fedex page worked so now I'll be refreshing that for the next few days waiting for that 1 lb to change to something else. I think I'm addicted, but I kinda love it...

Ditto here with the 1 lb placeholder and the comment that shipping info has been sent to Fedex.

And so we move into phase 3:

"Phase 3: The discussion of how much the packages are predicted to weigh, how big they are, how Smartpost is sending them all around the country, and whether they are arriving early, late, or maybe never, and how to find out all the tracking information. "

Thank you, Colonel.
I wonder if you as a member of WootStaff can enlighten us with some definitions according to the Woot Ghods? I've asked before, but never got an official answer, only conjecture from other Wooters.

Specifically, what exactly constitutes one crappy item?

In many of the bags I have received, there were three (or more) different types of thing, but possibly more than one of each thing. For example, I once got six 8" USB cables, but they were apparently counted as a single crappy item. Are multiple iterations of a single item one crap, or multiple craps?

The other situation came up last year, when some folks got a toiletries gift set of some sort that had soap, hand cream, and something else, all wrapped up in a shrink wrapped fancy package with a bow on top. Since those folks got only that (besides the bag they got), several contacted Woot that they were shorted. Some received an apology and a replacement bag. Others received a somewhat nasty comment saying that there were three things in the toiletries kit, so they had three craps, so what are they complaining about? It seems to me that a packaged thing like that is obviously a single item. What is the word of Woot on this matter?

Note that I am bringing this all up before my bag arrives, so I am not complaining about my bag, which would be against the commandments.

Looking for enlightenment.

Only thing I can speculate - and this is speculation - is that they are going by the "no less than three" - in that your 8 USB cables were above and beyond the three.
If the Woot Ghods were frowning upon you that day, it's entirely possible that would have been all you got. At least that's a new Wooter's guess.
This being my first successful bag, I can only speculate until I get some W&D from Smartpost. Then I can speculate with weight and dimensions! Until it arrives. Then I can take pictures and post it proudly.
Even if I get pure crap, being my first bag I fully intend to show it off!

To the new kids on the Bunnies Ogling Carrots

A bit of advice from someone that knows. I think my feelings for Woot and the Bunnies Ogling Carrots are pretty well known (and laughed at) at this point. This is my 13th Bunnies Ogling Carrots and I have to say I am just as excited about this one as I have been about every other except possibly my first, and the last one I received. My favorite part of the process is the anticipation, followed closely by reading all the great posts in these forums.

As much as I love these forums they can also be the bane of any wooter. Given that anticipation of the unknown is 90% of the fun, and the chances are pretty good that someone will post their Bunnies Ogling Carrots contents before you get yours there is the potential for your fun to be diminished by someone else's content. You buy the bag for the surprise, so why ruin the surprise? The most fun I have ever had have been the bags with no forums. The last bag I didn't even get a tracking number for so every item was a complete surprise and it was fantastic (except for the smell, what the hell are you guys eating in Seattle?)

So my advice to you, is to stop reading the forums before people start posting their contents and return once you have opened your bag. The forum will still be here and you can get all caught up later.

Take it for what it's worth

PS This is easier said than done, I have tried to stay away from the forums, but like much like Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers, and Lindsey Lohan I keep coming back

However, this is my 8th year of Wooting, and I have followed many a discussion thread about Bags of Crap. Empirically, it seems that the majority of times, the Woot Ghods count multiple iterations of identical items as a single crap. My multiple USB cables is one example. Another from years ago is when someone would get several dozen Sansa players in the Bag, but they would always have at least two other non-Sansa items.

I was more looking for confirmation from Woot Staph. We can all speculate all we want.

As an aside, those short USB cables are probably the Bag of Crap item that I have used more often than any other. The Woot purchase that I use the most, as in every day, is a Sansa MX-1 player I bought in 2007. I use one of the short USB cables to load files on it.

Here's a question for you forum veterans; What is the most efficient way to post pictures onto the forum?

I'm guessing you have to upload them -somewhere- but where I do not know. Nor do I know how to have them display themselves when I write a message as I am now.

I ask because I'd like to participate in the showing of my crap.

Now the waiting begins. My wait will be longer then others. I will be out of town all next week and the dear daughter has instructions NOT to open anything I get from WOOT!

But then, will I call her and ask her to open it because I just can't stand the unknown?

Probably a coupon earned around here at some point, or via deals (which occasionally grants coupons for participation in things).

I'm just hanging out, really.

I was more aghast that he would take the time to type in a code, and thus run the risk of losing to the clock and not getting one. That's a risk I'd never take. :8bux: is not enough to worry about a coupon with.

So, I'm not really one for forums and such, but I figured I'd go ahead and out myself as a Woot lurker. I was curious for months about these things, never around in time to get one, always Googling what people were getting. Finally, curiosity got the best of me with a little help from Wootalyzer (after missing every other one that day by forgetting to login first, being on the other side of the office, etc.).

Second purchase, first Bunnies Ogling Carrots.. and I've already begun the FedEx stalking via reference number. At least it's an obsession I can afford.

Best post ever, thanks LEM- for the amazing amount of info

Small update to your guide. I had to click the purple "Get Link" to get the permalink to the fedex tracking page.

A bit of advice from someone that knows. I think my feelings for Woot and the Bunnies Ogling Carrots are pretty well known (and laughed at) at this point. This is my 13th BoC and I have to say I am just as excited about this one as I have been about every other except possibly my first, and the last one I received. My favorite part of the process is the anticipation, followed closely by reading all the great posts in these forums.

As much as I love these forums they can also be the bane of any wooter. Given that anticipation of the unknown is 90% of the fun, and the chances are pretty good that someone will post their BoC contents before you get yours there is the potential for your fun to be diminished by someone else's content.

Mike

PS This is easier said than done, I have tried to stay away from the forums, but like much like Jason Voorhees and Michael Meyers, and Lindsey Lohan I keep coming back

PPS For the love of all things woot please post your pics and videos so we can see your loot (after!)

As this is my 14th bag, I'm set in my ways, you whipper snapper.

I've gone through the first 12 bags in this post:
http://www.woot.com/forums/viewpost.aspx?PostID=4817927

The last one contained, an iPod touch, current gen, which blew me away.

I'm excited to see what new batch brings. Things were jumbled up more in the last round, so the issue with the forums spoiling your fun is less relevant now.

I've not always posted pictures, especially if someone posted a picture of the same thing (I'm in Oregon, so I'm one of the last to get anything). But when there's something different, please post some pics, I'll do the same.

drgandalf wrote:However, this is my 8th year of Wooting, and I have followed many a discussion thread about Bags of Crap. Empirically, it seems that the majority of times, the Woot Ghods count multiple iterations of identical items as a single crap. My multiple USB cables is one example. Another from years ago is when someone would get several dozen Sansa players in the Bag, but they would always have at least two other non-Sansa items.

I stand corrected.

I was more looking for confirmation from Woot Staph. We can all speculate all we want.

I think I will, thank you very much. That's half the fun!

As an aside, those short USB cables are probably the Bag of Crap item that I have used more often than any other. The Woot purchase that I use the most, as in every day, is a Sansa MX-1 player I bought in 2007. I use one of the short USB cables to load files on it.

I have my Muzx headphones in my signature for my by-far-most-used (and abused) Woot.
Those crappy Fuji batteries come in a not too distant second. Partly because my Wii Remote eats them for lunch.

Notable Woots:
1 Samsung Modus Bluetooth Headset Kit, 2 MuzxDNA Earphones (one lost, one destroyed) superceded by 2 MEElectronics M16 Earphones, 2 Phantom S107's, 1 Art101 124-piece art set, iGo rechargable battery set, way more Fuji batteries than I immediately know what to do with, 1 Dell Streak 7" Tablet
1 Big Old Chevy dated 3/22/2011, #4 of the night (!).
1 Bundle of Caravans dated 4/25/2011

Jertyrael wrote:What is the most efficient way to post pictures onto the forum?

I'm guessing you have to upload them -somewhere- but where I do not know. showing of my crap.

I use DropShots, It is free and easy to use. After you sign up, you access your home page where you can upload your picks with the yellow "Upload" button. Browse your file to choose your pick and click OK.
After it is done you will see the thumbnail of your pick, click on it and it will open it with 6 options at the bottom of the picture:
+Buy Prints
+Widget
+Email
+Rotate
+Blog<<<<<<<
+Delete

If you click on "Blog" you get a link that you can just copy and paste in your comment.

Since it is free, you account's space is limited and there is a chance for spam, I can't be sure. I get some spam, but it very little and it is not necessarily from them. I just bring it up as something to consider before you sing up to anything free.
