Well....it reminds me of three of my pet peeves...

I hate when people refer to their "draws" and not "drawers."

And when they say, "the chair is broke" and not "broken."

And "it's mines" and not "it's mine."

"Spelt" is okay, but I prefer "spelled" because I think it leads to the three pet peeves mentioned above.

The difference though, between these examples and 'spelt', is that 'spelt' is CORRECT and they are incorrect. Spelt is an old word, probably predates 'spelled' (OK, that's a guess).

For Lynn, I actually thought about the grain when I proposed the word for this thread, although I was mostly thinking about the past tense use of spell..

kinda like 'dreamed' and 'dreamt'.....at least, to most folks I know. I have used the word 'dreamt' and gotten odd looks

my dad said 'chimley' instead of 'chimney'....and 'mushroon' instead of 'mushroom'

and both of my parents said 'warsh'..only dad said more like 'wursh'

and for a good laugh we would ask my mom to say 'aluminum'.....came out something like 'aloonimum'
