I have owned a Lenova 550 for 2 years now

Intel Celeron CPU 900 @ 2.20 GHz 2.19 GHz
RAM 3.00 GB

It has been a work horse and a tank. This is a well-built, utilitarian, not flashy, great all around computer. I have no complaints.
I am not ready for a new one but if I was this would be the one.

Looks like a great deal, except I just bought the SSD Dell laptop on Wednesday. Aside from the screen resolution, this looks just about perfect.

I'd love to have another Lenovo, but 1366x768 on a 15" screen makes Homer something-something

Great buy with the exception of that ridiculous display port instead of HDMI.When was the last time you saw a monitor or TV with display port input? Sure, there are adapters and cables, but if it's not "display port++",guess what?,no audio folks!! HP also continues to provide this failed precursor to HDMI.As a Lenovo/IBM lover and owner for many years, this is really disappointing.

Not sure about this model, but recent T420 series and T5xx series have had fan noise issues. Poor support from Lenovo as well. In fact 10 months w/o a solution to the high pitched, annoying fan noise.

1. DisplayPort- Supposedly the future...but just about nobody (except Apple, but that's mini-DisplayPort) uses it. Even my $800 24" work screen doesn't use it. You can buy DisplayPort -> HDMI adapters, but it's a crappy workaround.

2. No USB 3.0. eSata is OK, but I've had many issues with it. USB 3.0 is a deal breaker for me anymore.

Otherwise, classic Thinkpad with nice specs.

NOT the future-It was a miserable failure six years ago when it was introduced, and continues to be, due to lack of compatible peripherals.

Interesting. We have several hundred of the T and the L series deployed to the field. There are no "fan noise" issues. Lenovo support is some of the best in the business. BUT, they're support website is one of the worst in the business.

Speaking from personal experience here.

After 10 months of "no solution", that's pretty poor. Either way the product is going end of life soon.

Well, I do see one error in the feature description. This does not have a 15" LED display, it is a LED "backlit" LCD display. There is a HUGE difference between the two.

Vizio 32” 720p LCD HDTV (2 of them), Seagate 750GB SATA/300 7200RPM Hard Drive, SiliconDust HDHomeRun Dual Digital HDTV Tuner, Kodak Theater HD Player, Acer Aspire One 10.1” Netbook, Philips Prestigo 8-Device Universal Remote, Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook with 1.6GHz Atom Processor, Philips Upconverting DVD Player with DivX and HDMI, Ashley Rock Axe Full Size Rockband and Guitar Hero Controller for PS2 and PS3, Philips Icon 5 Device Universal Remote, and a bunch of other carp.

I'm so tempted. My wife is entering graduate school this summer and I was going to surprise her with a laptop anyhow. I've been looking at this Toshiba for $730 (http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Port%C3%A9g%C3%A9-R835-P94-13-3-Inch-Magnesium/dp/B006YL1AMG/) which is on the outside edge of my budget. At least with this Thinkpad I could still afford to get her some accessories she'll need and maybe drop the extra ram in it. Can anyone confirm that I *can* put another stick of ram in without problems?
If you were going to graduate school, which one would you rather have?

Well parents are the same no matter time nor place / So to you other kids all across the land / Take it from me / Parents just don't understand

Can someone compare this woot to the online deal Lenovo has on the Thinkpad E520?

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:item.detail?GroupID=37&Code=E520_BETTER_SAP&category-id=682DAB6A3AEDC57F67B2D9318BD0C025

I dont need a full numberpad so the extra size just adds weight and bulk that I don't need, and it would take a few extra weeks to get to me. But I don't mind being patient if it's worth the extra $50.

I was planning on buying a Thinkpad within the next few days, so this happens to be a perfect situation. How do the builds compare, and how do the different i5's compare? Is windows 7 pro worth it? I'm leaning towards this deal, I just want some confirmation from the folk who are slightly geekier than I.

I have a 27" iMac at home, this is for word processing, coding, and deep firefox tabbing in grad school and the office.

Thanks in advance...hopefully this is still available by the time I make up my mind!

Quick question....is this laptop capable of gaming?...(COD 4, etc)??

nkull

quality posts: 2 Private Messages nkull

The E series on the Lenovo site for the same price has a slower processor, and it is an EDGE... IMO, the EDGE is crap in comparison. I have an EDGE and I hate it, I have been a long time ThinkPad fan and the edge looks and feels cheap, the whole Edge line is a disgrace to the high quality ThinkPad name... Also keep in mind that this deal is getting you a 3 year warranty!

If you are trying to decide between the two, get this Woot!

For a gaming laptop, you will do better with a system that has dedicated graphics which this one does not... It will probably play them, but don't expect high frame rate gaming from an integrated card.

Is there a keyboard light on this model? My t61 has one and i use it every night. This is not listed in the features but it is an easily missed feature.

I don't care about aesthetics. I like Thinkpads for the durability. But I do think Lenova should put the old Red Green Blue IBM logo back on the stinkpads. It makes me nostalgic for old times. Lenovo did this for the first few years after buying the line from IBM.

The resolution is garbage. Its a minor detail to some, but I'm not even going to consider a machine at that DPI. It's unusable. You're better off with an iPad (which, by the way, has 3 times as many pixels and costs the same).

Really not that impressed. Good processor, average video, underwhelmed with the amount of RAM, well built tablet. The issue here is how well built to you need a tablet to be? If you are a constant traveler this would be great if you need the ruggedness. But I don't think the pricing is all that great. I think that this is a better Laptop for the same price:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246328&cm_sp=Tab_PCs_%26%2338%3b_Laptops-_-Featured_Brand-_-34-246-328

CPU passmark this Laptop I5=2388, Newegg AMD A6-3400M=3001. The Newegg laptop has far better video AMD Radeon HD 6650M vs generic Intel GMA HD. In addition, the Newegg laptop has more RAM and a bigger HD than todays WOOT. Same price but free shipping. C'mon Woot.

Grant it that the WOOT today may have a more rugged build to it. But how long do you intend on keeping a laptop? Whether it be new technology, Windows 8, or whatever, after 2-3 years most people trade their laptop in anyway.

The best thing about the thinkpad line is that no one can tell how old your laptop is/how cheap you are!!
At first glance he newest models look like the oldest models.

I paid about the same for a similar ThinkPad Edge from Staples last year on Tax Free Weekend w/ $100 Visa Gift Card promo.

Great computer and Lenovo ThinkPad support is the best! We a had a noise issue with ours and they sent out a new unit ASAP. Plus the new unit had Second Gen Sandybridge and a larger HDD. Plus they let us keep the charger from the faulty one.

It's great when a company believes in it's product, you could tell they did.

To make that sort of comment you obviously don't have any clue as to the functionality of a laptop vs an IPAD. So you can keep taking pictures on your IPAD of your cat and looking at them in brilliant high definition while the rest of us with real jobs and lives use software that can't be replicated in "APPS"

Not sure, but that sounds like the issue we had. It wasn't the fan or the HDD it was a low volume but very audible high pitch squeal come from the computer even when turned off, if it was plugged in. Lenovo support replaced ours with a newer unit and we haven't had the issue again.

Support said it was a board/power issue.

Here is some info on Woot shipping practices. I don't think anyone would call Woot's Shipping or Smartpost "blazing" but rest assured you will get your computer... at some point in the semi-near future.
