Seems a bit pointless to go to all that trouble to protect it from fire and water when the lone disk is a single point of failure. If they had made this a dual drive setup with RAID 0 capability that would have made much more sense.

I want this!! But since you can't swap the drive out, I don't see the point in such an investment. Meh.

$499 on Amazon (with good reviews). $429 on Overstock.

The devil is in the details. The data recovery service is only valid for the first year... most hard drives I've had don't fail in the first year its the 3rd or 4th... so that is pointless.

It only protects from a fire for 30 minutes... what are the odds the fire department will have your house fire extinguished in 30 minutes? Unlikely to happen, so it doesn't really protect your from fire.

I guess the flood might be nice but if you invested in a few pocket sized drives you could just take them with you when the flood waters are rising so I'm not sure I need water proof.

In the end, I think its made for someone with more money than they know what to do with.

I think you mean raid 1, but that is a good point.

Yes I killed a 1TB external drive once.

CNET review has a point, "Oddly, the drive doesn't support RAID or any other redundancy to safeguard data from commonplace hard-drive failure."
I just spent a week and a half recovering 22GB data from a failing drive for my mother-in-law. The idea is redundancy, put it in the cloud or a safe deposit box :-P

No network, no deal.

For the price, I would rather just have 2 NAS boxes, located in two different places (like a friend's house or work), that sync with each other. It'd cost about the same, and protect you against one getting caught in a flood or fire.

I'd like to see the guts of it. I bet the back has a heat sink sticking out that the fan blows against. As long as it's sealed around the heat sink, the important parts would still be waterproof. The fan might be dead afterwards, but you should still be able to get your files.

If this were a fireproof and waterproof RAID NAS, I'd be all frickin' over it. With a single disc inside it's like putting an iron cage up to protect a snowman.

Are you reading that as 640MB/s (megabytes) or 640Mb/s (megabits)? It says 640Mbs BTW.

I think you mean RAID 1. RAID 0 is striping. RAID 1 is mirroring.

You are correct I did mean RAID 1 mirrored disks.

59 percent sold so I guess 100 of them. A CPA friend bought one of the ooooops, 50 percent sold. I'll get to see it when it's delivered.
