Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

What's a vacation? Oh, I remember. It's that thing you get when you have a job.

I want to do something besides the beach this year. that's our go-to bc we're already on the Gulf but sun and sand gets old. I want to go to Australia most of all though. I've had enough of the Caribbean

Can't afford to go anywhere this summer. Even San Diego Comic Con is out of the picture, and I'm only 120 miles away.

Tahiti. Most beautiful place in the whole world. You lucky dog. No TV needed. Just sit & watch the fish through the glass panel in the floor. Then go out & sit on the deck. Unbelievable scenery.

The US is woefully behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to vacations. Other countries (England, France, Spain, Austalia, & New Zealand i know from friends and family) expect workers to take time off annually. Some employers even force the issue, scheduling time off if the employee doesn't willingly take it.

I feel like employers here would rather do anything but give people time off.

Our annual geek-cation entails driving 800 miles west of light pollution to view the Orionid meteor shower. Or we could wait until fall when it's cooler and take the same trip to view the Perseids or Leonids.

Cruising aboard the world's largest passenger ship: Oasis of the Seas.

Don't plan to visit any of the ports of call: Caribbean = ghettoes with a beach.

so you're just going to sit on the boat? If you've ever been on a cruise, you know that ship gets old real fast, the stops are what makes a cruise worth it

Spending my summer working in New Mexico, which is kind of a vacation from Texas, but still not really a vacation since I'm working. I'm really on the fence about this one.

Hey you could go to Otakon for a third of the price! A couple thousand costumed Anime nuts! and a rave! Can't beat that kind of fun. Turning Baltimore harbor into main street in Tokyo.

Our standard vacation has been a week or so at a place in the Catskills (upstate NY) and we are doing it for the tenth or eleventh time again this year. A relaxing week with good food and nice people.

I'm off on every Friday from late June through Labor Day weekend, so those may turn into something though only one has a plan so far (see above).

I'll also be making some college visits with Daughter #2, so wandering around other parts of upstate NY, and possibly elsewhere, will also happen. (Another year that I may put more than 7500 miles on the car.)

In mid-August, my job is sending me from our office here in south Florida to Indianapolis for 4 days. Does that count as a vacation?

If I cannot earn your respect, please allow me to purchase it from you.

Vote of the Beast o.o (I got vote #666)
In other news, when you live in a place other people come on vacation, a Staycation actually becomes a good idea.

Heaven forbid you should actually visit. You might learn something about the culture, taste native foods or see the Queen's staircase in Nassau, or botanical gardens in Freeport, kayak, swim, shop, gamble, learn about the history of the real pirates of the Caribbean, not the Johnny Depp version.
Not that there's anything wrong with Johnny Depp.
Even my 80 year old aunt who's been everywhere and to the Caribbean a dozen times got off the boat.

Air fares are, at the present time, awfully high for sure. Going to Seattle (I do try to get there a couple of times a year), and I am considering either a flight out to Hawaii or an Alaskan cruise. Have considered these options severl times in the past, and Hawaii always wins. Maybe I should give the cruise to Alaska more consideration this time - just the inside passage is my thinking at the moment.

Oh, the idea of a vacation! My graduate program doesn't allow it. Instead, I have three required classes to take over the summer that are pre-reqs for my practicum next year, and that are only offered this summer. Joy.

Stay-cation - I already live in South Florida, one of the top vacation areas. We stay home and get visitors who'll take us out to dinner in exchange for telling them where to sight-see while they are here. Then at the end of summer, we go to our condo in the keys and share with more family visitors... (We take our vacations in the spring and fall)
Life is good!

Take a long weekend and go camping with the kids is our "vacation" *every* summer. I haven't been on a real vacation since I was a kid. When we had the time, there was no money, and when we had the money, there was no time.

Oh, jealous! Be sure to post pics for us!

As for me, I'm probably not going to get to go anywhere - I've got two conventions (one of which I'm staff for), several events in the works, and well... not in the cards this year.

If I'm lucky, w! will put up another DSLR at some point and I can use that to entertain myself around town with.

I'm just hanging out, really.

My wife and I did a 5-day on the Navigator of the Seas (once tied for largest passenger ship), through the Caribbean. I would very highly recommend getting of the boat and seeing the ports, though. We saw Ocho Rios Jamaica and Grand Cayman, both were great places to visit. If you think they are "ghettoes" then What Tiny Flowers are you going there for? You could have flown to Europe and sailed the same ship (or its sister ship) in the Mediterranean.

In short, the ships are great but the locations make the trip worthwhile. Don't be such a prude about the rest of the world.
