Well compared to the $299 Dyson asked for when these first came out (still priced at this on their site) $99 is not to bad and IMO you're paying mostly for the novelty/name

Get a good fan early for 2012 summer - from the Weather Channel: "We expect the warmest summer temperatures, relative to normal, to be found across parts of the north-central US this summer...the oncoming El Nino event suggests that the warmest part of the summer is more likely to be early, with generally cooler temperatures later in the summer."

I bought the 10" model the last time it was on Woot for about $60 more. I was skeptical when these came out but then I actually tried one in a store and was impressed. BUt like most people, I thought it was way too expensive so when Woot had the 10" model for $169, I grabbed it (sadly, Amazon had a one day sale where it was only $129 just a week after!!!).

Well, I'm duly impressed and it actually surpassed my expectations. It has replaced my Vornado as my daily fan. I base this opinion on performance only and not on aesthetics or the Dyson name. Here are some points:

- I never considered "buffeting" a problem but the smooth air transfer of this Dyson really does make a difference. It's more "natural," i.e. like the wind.

- The aerodynamics that Dyson claims are true, and that's what amazed me most. It really does multiply the air flow -- A LOT. If you take off the multiplier ring and just rely on the small-bladed fan in the base, you could hardly feel any air movement about a yard away. Even on high, the thrust is weak. Yet with the ring, I can feel the air about 10' away. And the dispersion is rather wide.

More proof of the multiplying aerodynamics can be seen simply by putting a strip of paper in back, within the perimeter of the ring. You can see it being pulled forward despite there not being any blades parallel to the air current. That proves that air movement is multiplied beyond what is coming out of the holes in the ring (from the base fan).

Yet more proof can be seen if you put a strip of paper outside the ring. It too will be pulled forward, albeit not as vigorously as the strip inside the ring.

The addition of air movement inside and outside the ring is why Dyson calls this an air multiplier. This is more efficient than normal fans, where the only air movement is what is directly moved by the blades.

- the above means that this Dyson is more energy efficient than a normal fan

- The oscillation is very smooth, mostly because it's so light. Normal oscillating fans use gears to move a very heavy head (where the motor resides). That not only requires a lot of energy (torque) but the gears break easily. Because the Dyson's motor is on hte base, the only thing it needs to oscillate is the very light hollow ring. That means most of the energy is used the base fan, and very little energy is used for oscillation.

- It's extremely light and can be easily moved from room to room. I can lift the 10" model with my pinky.

- Cleaning is much easier. No need to disassemble grilles and blades. You can simply wipe the ring and base with some mild detergent. I will say that the air holes in the base are getting somewhat grimy and clogged with dust,

- The ring twists off easily making storage simple. I can easily put the 10" model beneath my bed,

- Placement is easy. I sometime place it on its side on my bed.

===========

BIGGEST NEGATIVE:

- It's nosier than a normal fan

- You also can't mountit on a wall.

Being a mature (yet sexy) woman of an age, I experience frequent...er...private summers, shall we say? There are small, battery-operated fans with blades that work mediocre-ly compared to one I bought from the Dollar store years ago (guess how much I paid for it...go on, guess), which has a squirrel-cage fan. No blades, but compartments...more like a watermill throwing larger "gulps" of air at you fast and furiously as opposed to blades being able to un-oomph it with enough gusto to keep me from "glistening". Like a paratrooper. In July. In South Carolina. But I digress. Technically, I suppose the walls of the compartments could be considered blades, but they work in a completely different fashion.

Besides, if there were blades in there, they'd hurt the squirrels.

Working at Best Buy, I got one of these new with an accommodation Dyson had. My wife needs the moving air and noise to sleep properly.
As an owner AND a salesman... I'll agree that these really aren't worth the $200-300 you'll pay in stores. It's a fan, for crying out loud.

However, at THIS price it's not a bad deal. It's not much louder than a normal fan, but instead of the deeper fan noise it's more of a higher pitched whine. That difference can make it seem louder when it really isn't. Also, if you're sticking your hand right in the middle of the ring, you won't feel much air moving. Get about a foot in front of it, though! It really moves air nicely.

All I've ever had to worry about was wiping the ring down with a damp paper towel and then wiping the frill down at the base. It's solidly constructed, stood up to our rampaging kitten, and hasn't so much as hiccuped even after being used for 6-9 hours EVERY DAY for the past two years.

No. The fan has blades. The fan is in the base. The fan outlet is in the hoop. But there are in fact blades, they just aren't exposed or otherwise visible.

These fans are a novelty. Dyson's "fruit-like"* marketing is something to behold.

*Look! Fruit!

Mr. or Ms. sdc100 speaks the truth about the functionality of the fan. It really is quite impressive in both the deliciously buttery smoothness of its airflow and how much it produces from the teeny tiny little fan hidden in the base.

That being said, the build quality is atrocious. It feels cheap and crappy like it'll fall apart, and if you go check out a midmarket retailer like Target or Best Buy, their floor model probably has, in fact, fallen apart. Body pieces are exceptionally thin, and the speed control? 1970s economy car knob. Disappointment city.

Super disappointing for a fan with a $300 list price. And then you add the noise factor (tiny, screaming, shrill fan in the base!) on top... even the woot price is pushing it IMO.

On the other hand, if you've already lost your high frequency hearing and never touch your appliances, go hog wild!

Wow, if this thing really has a fan inside the base like people are saying that is false advertising in my opinion. Had I bought one I would be pissed. If that is true they shouldn't put crap like that up here. It isn't bladeless---the blades are just hidden inside. Big deal. The blades in most fans are inside a cage.

Just to be clear, these are really, really lousy fans. In particular, they don't move much air - what air they do move is only around the outside edge of the circle. At $99, still massively overpriced for what you get, which is less performance than a $10 clip-on fan.

Just be sure you don't put this in your bathroom and think you can stick your hands through the hoop to dry them in the horizontal position. This is not the same thing as the Dyson Airblade which you use with your hands in the vertical position.

Meh... Dyson just ripped off a concept used in early hovercraft designs back in the 1950's called an "annular jet" invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell. Dyson didn't invent the annular jet nor the desk fan but they did invent a new way to charge too much for one.

They are not silent, if you want a super quiet fan that you can not hear then these are not for you.

However in my opinion the noise produced is a pleasing white noise, not a loud annoying noise. I am extremely happy with the noise level of these fans.

I can't agree more. But hey, it's "fancy looking". People would buy it.

I just absolutely hate the fact that this fan is completely energy inefficient. The little fan inside the base by itself would move more air.

I have tested it personally at a friend's house, and not only is it loud, it's hardly circulating much air. At home and my office, I have three Honeywell TableTop Fan, which I bought from Home Depot for about $20. It's cheaper, quieter and moves a lot of air. It's even wall mountable if you feel like it. They also came out with a new white model, which is also pretty to look at. At Amazon.com, it's currently....$15. The ones I have are black.

On Woot, I guess I am known-ish to love well-designed, slightly fancier things. But this Dyson? It's not fancy. It's flimsy, all hype, and no value.

Any fan that does not show in a VERY obvious way 2 things you should pass on.

Those 2 things are:

CFM: Cubic feet per minute. Its the amount of actual air they move per minute.

dB: This is the decibel noise rating. This tells you how loud the fan (or "bladeless" fan in the base) outputs what you really hear.

Normally, the more air it moves (higher CFM) than the louder it is. The only way to counter this is to run a much LARGER fan, but much slower.

But as the fan is really in the base, it's pretty small... and when it gets going... it whines up pretty loudly.

Get a bigger fan, and run it at a lower speed... moves more air, at a much lower audio level.

Where ever you be, there you are!
