Where does Woot find these? I have never seen the internals of a desktop like this. No Internal power supply? No ventilation of any kind? Wow... a low powered laptop in a desktop case. Yes, a lawnmower engine driving a tractor trailer.

Even if it had more power, there are no slots available on the motherboard to plug in a card. The only things you can expand on this machine are the RAM and the hard drive.

Radiojohn, I am just bothered by companies selling off crap to unknowing individuals. To me it's like selling a car to someone knowing that the transmission is about to blow and just pass the junk off to someone else. This is very overpriced for what you get. If it included even a small 12" monitor and back up battery and wifi I would think it's fair, but not this. It is fooling people that it is a desktop when it is truly not.

Some day I'm going to write a sarcastic article about "opinion" sites. My fave was the person who bought a $79 sub netbook running WIN/CE (a PDA OS) and complained about how, on Christmas Day, her little girl was crying because it wouldn't play her favorite online games.

Speaking of odd OS ideas, would this thing be happy with some fairly standard version of Linux?

A point well taken. OTOH, those of us who were weaned on DOS machines understand that, when you match the software to the capabilities of the unit, you get good performance. But you are right: I can go to any big box store today and get a better deal with WiFI, etc. Maybe $179.95 is a better price?

An interesting question, and a bit hard to answer. 65 watts is not what the PS will draw all the time, its the maximum it is capable of supplying. What it draws at idle could be much lower.

Modern power supplies are pretty efficient, and they have been getting better. As an example, I got a new desktop 6 months ago. It has a power supply rated at 850 watts, but at idle, it draws only 49 watts, according to the readout from the UPS I use. The 7 year old computer it replaced drew 116 watts when it was idling, and it had a smaller power supply.

Around here, electricity costs $0.24 per kWhr. Running the current computer costs me about $10 a month, running 24hrs/day. Running the one Woot offers today would cost about $2.50, assuming it only draws half of the maximum the PS can supply, it is on 50% of the time and you pay the same outrageous price for power.

It's not an integrated card, it's part of the CPU chip, hence the term "APU" (Accelerated Processing Unit).

Although you might be able to find a couple of laptops with this chip in it, it's not really meant for them. It's meant for netbooks.

THIS THING IS BRILLIANT!!!!

It looks as though the HP technology integration people finally came up with a working solution to their overheating laptops.

That's not unnecessary empty space inside that oversized case... it's mandatory cooling space. And without a fan, probably just enough space to eek it past that pesky 90-day warranty period.

Having learned my lesson - now being the proud owner of a beautiful 17 inch HP fried laptop brick siting on my closet floor - before I'd ever consider purchasing this POS, I would have wanted to purchase the previous WOOT (Dyson fan) to use as a PC cooling fan.

There are a handful of variables like how much power it's actually drawing at any given moment and what your electric cost per KWh is. I can say that for me personally running 65watts for half a day every day would result in about $3 per month. If I had a box running most of the day for some reason and it only really had to be a simple PC, I could see this recovering it's own cost in 2 years or so.

If there are hard drive connection options this would be a great box to use as a custom NAS on a home network. I suppose even USB external drives would work. But I would have to compare the cost with what $299 would buy in an actual NAS type device. most of the lower priced ones I've tried though are extremely slow.

I'm sure it would be, but at the price for this one, it's a lot smarter to build a basic micro-ITX case unit for less money. The only saving grace for this unit is the Win7 license.

Recreating the same hardware to run Linux for less money is easy. Add the Win7 license and it gets difficult.

Lets see...

65 watt vs 300 watt power savings...

Difference of 235 watts. Times 12 hrs / day is 470 watt-hours, times 365 days / year is 171550 watt-hours, or 171.55 kwh.

Say that the price of electricity is 12 cents per kwh, so savings in running this instead of a larger 300 watt machine is:

12 cents times 171.55 kwh or $34.31 per year

or $2.86 per month

or 10 cents per day.
