If you're on the fence with this and another camera, I used this website for comparisons:

http://www.dpreview.com/products/compare/cameras

It has a lot of neat specs it compares. VERY handy!

That's a very helpful comparison tool.

Usually the DPREVIEW web site is good & accurate, but it's Kodak Z5120 specs are bad & wrong in lots of areas like ISO, video resolution quality, internal storage amount, uncompressed format, etc. Folks need to make sure to double-check Woot's good accurate product specs on this 1st before depending on DPREVIEW's mixed up info on this camera this time.

My only complaint was the limited 640X480 15fps video.

This one has significantly better specs and the price is good but aesthetically I think the camera is rather ugly compared to my old Z710. Hmmm...do I want to purchase a potentially good ugly camera?

I just looked at some pics of your old Kodak. If I was you, I wouldn't be worried if you bought this camera. Actually, no offense, but they're both sort of ugly.

It actually works quite well if you give yourself clear marks for the "ends" of each shot. Can put two or three pics together. It will display the previous shot and give you the ability to "match" the end to the beginning of the next one. Does not require a tripod. I have done a few one the Z1015 and they turned out pretty well, can see the "ends" on a few hand held ones, others blend almost perfect.

Uh... Gee... What a "coincidence" that this one day offering of the Z990 showed up here. However, I disagree that the Z990 is "better," because for "the same price" the Z5120 has a better wide angle, and is smaller, thinner and slightly faster, and -- hey guess what -- it's also NEW and under manufacturer warranty instead of recertified!

I have bought from 1saleaday.com before and they have never rubbed me the wrong way. I actually bought a 32GB SD card from them this morning, only to find it for the same price on Amazon Prime. I shot them an email and had my order canceled within 30 minutes.

The big advantage that I see is that the CMOS sensor is a better sensor on the Z990, and I think the 1080p is nice for the video especially if you want to burn to bluray. A viewfinder is a great option on a bright sunny day when you are outside. The Z990 has great reviews. But the choice is yours- once you got to this form factor size isn't really an issue, it's not like you are going to put either camera in your pocket. I have had good experiences with 1saleaday- plus it's tracked through newegg.

I've bought from them a few times. The items all came in between a week to a week and a half. So far everything I've ordered from them works and in the condition described.

Just note that the shipment package isn't going to come in a box, so far I've gotten mines in large bubbled envelopes/bags.

But I usually don't buy anything from the site that is overly expensive (over $3).

Well, I bought 10x beanies, 3x HDMI cables, 2x iPod Cables and 1x optical cables from them. Each for a dollar a piece and free shipping. Working.

I got a Jawbone from them for around twenty bucks, was a little too risky/anxious for me after I hit the buy now button until I unboxed it.

But fine, I've raised the expensive level to $15. Happy?

1. She could use a camera like this with flash, which would improve the shutter speed to catch the action. But the shutter lag would still be an issue.

Sorry, that's wrong. The flash covers 13 feet, and she will be in the bleachers. Plus, the flash will probably set the shutter at a fixed speed. And she may get kicked out for using flash in the first place.

Trust me, I've dealt with this question for more than 7 years from students of all ages. Eventually, as ISOs increase, it will get better.

But now you need to spend a lot more money if you want to shoot sports action shots. Outdoors, perhaps,a cheapie will be OK some of the time. Indoors, there just isn't enough light going through the lens to support a high enough shutter speed. "Digital" does not mean "magic." Cameras of all kinds still are bound by the laws of physics.

People who go from decision free point and shoots and then want to shoot in very challenging situations need to learn a lot more about photography or they will waste money on gear that can't do the job.

I think you've lost track of the question that started this.

There's no mention of grandchildren or sports or games. It's just about taking picture of a child.

Someone else asked about photographing grandchildren, but that was after all this.

I've personally gotten bitten with "re-certified" junk off 1 sale a day. They've replaced defectives each time, but I've waited forever only to find the replacement bad as well. There is differences in resellers of re-certified and the quality control of the lots they are purchased from. I personally would not chance it with something this expensive.

Message from the Manufacturer: Kodak recently announced that it will be exiting the digital camera, video, and picture frame businesses. Service & support will continue within the terms of the manufacturer's warranty, which is 1 year from the purchase date. Additionally, the Kodak Share button software and Pulse network will continue to be supported as well.

This has been covered before (ad nauseum), but I will say it again: The one on Amazon for $140 is different. It is a different model with different specs. It is 12 megapixel and 21x zoom.

The cheapest I could find this model online for is $329.

Not the same camera. For some reason when you search 'Kodak Easyshare z5120' on amazon, the z5010 with a 21X zoom comes up.

I think I understand what the grandparents and parents are saying. They want a decent, inexpensive camera to capture action shots without paying $500 or more for a dslr. I think this camera will be more than enough for someone taking photographs for a family album.

radi0j0hn wrote:I've dealt with dozens of these nice folks and I think I now now very well what they are trying to do. They really are hoping for action shots of their kids/grandkids playing in the game indoors. Trust me on this. I'm trying to save them wasted money and frustration. Many of them have never spent more than $35 for a camera and naturally think something around $200 must be all they need. Some even hope to shoot weddings professionally with these cameras.

Here’s the problem in a nuthshell. In almost every type of product, there is “commercial grade” and “high grade.” For example, Mr. Coffee and others make acceptable espresso machines for $89. But a real barista will spend $3,000, especially if the gear is used as part of a coffee shop.

Even your nicest home washing machines are no match for the ones built for use in laundromats.

You would never think of buying a car off the showroom and entering it in the Daytona 500.

But because digital cameras have been so hyped-up, people think they can by some $150 camera and shoot just like the pros. While they may have as good an eye as a pro and while under nice conditions they can get good shots, it’s in the extremes that the difference is found.

Do you think that pro sports photographers would spend $3,000 for one lens if they could get by with a camera like this one?

Will you occasionally get lucky and get and good shot? Sure. But when you are zoomed out to 460mm inside with no tripod and an f/5.6 or even f/8 maximum aperture, you are NOT going to get the shots you want.

So it’s time to quit dreaming and get real about what you are buying. In a few years, this may all be a moot point as the technology improves. But right now folks need to quit trying to shoot near-impossible shots with gear not designed for the job.

That's all very nice that you think you know what people want, but again, you were not addressing the concern she raised. You were addressing a concern she never mentioned, specifically, shooting at distance.

I wish somebody would explain this attitude to me. I am tired of paying hugely-inflated prices for proprietary accessories for electronics of all kinds. AA batteries offer:

-- Many choices of rechargeable quality.
-- They are cheap, compared especially to proprietary batteries.
-- Readily accessible battery chargers for all circumstances: I have rechargers for the car, US and European plugs. All inexpensive.
-- In a pinch, when you run out of charge, you can pop into millions of retail stores, even vending machines, and get a set of Alkalines.

I seek out cameras that take AAs. I strongly prefer them. What is not to like? I really want to know! It cofounds me.
