Apparently, this is pre-rooted, just needs read-write access: http://bit.ly/IFhLhB

And there IS a CWM mod for it, CWM 5: http://bit.ly/IlYfTE

I might just get this...

I've been looking for a tablet just for viewing CBR files (digital comics) is this the tablet I should get or save up for something better?

You better off keeping the nook.. this table is a piece of crap...now you could have bought a new nook color for $150 (at staples on sale now, fyi) (i got mine used for $100 at cowboom).. Nook and Kindle Fire are the best cheapest tablet to get.. Most other are just crap!

It is good for reading books, so if you wanted to get a nook you may as well go this route.

It can be used for youtube actually. Probably the only thing it is good for. The book reading experience on it is dreadful.

While this tablet involves fewer bucks, from the comments it's sounding like it has less bang than one would proportionally expect. Your Nook may have been a better deal overall.

So this is like the Sony Dash, but without the Netflix, Hulu, and Crackle? Does it at least do Pandora?

Got this for the female progeny. The tablet is fine for ebooks and surfing. The biggest drawback is the MIPS processor. There are very few apps optimized for MIPS. It's an ARM world. If you get it slatedroid can help you remove the bloat, add the market, and impove the tablet a great deal.

60 bucks for a tablet? Obviously there's no catch.

Nope, no catch at all. Then again, it's a $60 tablet. What do you expect?

Does anyone know if:

1. I could load word on one of these?
2. Will it take an external video source like
another laptop?

For the price, it would make an excellent teleprompter monitor as a reference backstage, not something to be read by talent.

just wondering.

I purchased and returned this item.

It is quite decent as a reader, specially with the Amazon Kindle App for Android, with good battery life and a better screen aspect ratio than most 7" tablets.

Good battery life comes at the cost of a big battery, making the unit unexpectedly heavy.

It is unusable as a tablet. Processor is too slow to even track fingers on the otherwise OK capacitive screen. Even after you install Amazon market, many downloaded apps do not work. Since most Android apps are Java based, and not native, I found this surprising.

I purchased one of these and was very very unimpressed. Its extremely slow, non responsive, not very compatible with many things and over all just not worth even 60 bucks imo.

This video pretty much explains anything you may be wondering. In the comments under the video, it explains how to upgrade it up to 2.2 loading it on an SD card to tablet.
I was in for 1, but the 20 minute video made me too sleepy. Even if you are not in for one, but have some insomnia, I highly recommend the video.

PERFECT Mother's Day Gift.. I'll say it's a photo frame (and priced along with others in this size range), and she can read books... and check the weather and 'maybe' Gmail.

Used as a photo frame, mom won't give a crap about it's speed or specs.

IN FOR TWO!! Yes, I have two Mom's. No, not one of them there girl on girl wedding deals, but more like a Mom and Mom In-Law. ;-)

1. Not exactly, there are readers and editors for Word files, but Microsoft Word will not run directly on it. It looks like Onlive Desktop is not available outside the Google Play Store, so you can't use that either.

2. Not directly, but you could use VNC to connect to your laptop using the network, which would probably work OK for a teleprompter (but not for anything fast like games).

My local goodwill has a bunch of these for $49 (brand new). They have been there for about 6 months. I live in a small town full of "country folk", and none of them will buy those "$50 dollar iPads ". I bought one just for the "how bad could it be?" factor. Yep..these things are "that bad". I should have just burned the $50.

Seriously? Dont talk about peeps Moms like that, not cool

She doesn't even know what WiFi is. I'll throw in an SD card with low res photos, run a slideshow and she'll love it. If she can tap to see the weather as well... Bonus. Maybe check an email? Perfect. At the speed she types, she'll tap a letter key, and by the time she reaches the next letter, I'm sure the tablet will catch up by then.. I hope.

Don't be a rose bud. Cool it. :-/

I'm still rockin' it with Windows XP on both my work machine (IT related stuff such as programming, SQL, dealing with tickets, etc.) and my main home machine. But I'll ditch XP when Microsoft stops sending out security updates when they pull support in 2014.

Maybe I had too much faith in my fellow wooter to tell the difference between when someone is using you to mock today's product and when they're "dissing" your mom :/

And she may not know what WiFi is, but she'll notice when this tablet stops pulling up the weather or her email after about 10 minutes of use, because apparently that's how Velocity Micro designed these things to work.

CBR files will take a long time to load (8-10 seconds) for each page.

PDF files take longer.

Umm, lol, in a word... NO. Sorry but you'd never want to try to load anything on this particular tablet. Even if you could you'd be so frustrated from just trying to get the touch screen to respond that you'd chuck this thing through the nearest window.

It does however make a lovely paperweight.

Looks to me like you'd be better off to look on EBay or Craigslist for a used Motorola Droid X smartphone with a bad ESN for not too much more than what Woots wants for this tablet.

Verizon smartphones with a bad ESN can't be activated on Verizon or a Verizon MVNO (e.g., Page Plus), but can be used as mini-tablets with WiFi. You can use an app called GrooveIP in conjunction with Google Voice to make free calls over WiFi.

Heck, you might even luck out and get a Droid X with a good ESN for only a couple bucks more.
