Got my Cruz yesterday - DOA!

Opened support case via web; still no response after 24hr. I guess this is the only thing I can do at this time since RMA for a replacement requires this.

Found a suggestion that you hold the up volume button down at the same time as the power button, keep holding it till the android guy comes up. This is the factory reboot procedures. Just a thought for a possible fix. After the android guy comes up, wait about 5 minutes, then hold power button down to restart.

POS doesnt work, screen wont unlock, Cruz support not helpful. Returning to them directly hopefully will have better luck with the next one.

When you use Google and you click on where you want to go the damnthing goes back to search and not to the page you click. Anyone know how to return this thing?

I just received the 3 units I purchased and all 3 have issues.

1. They all have an issue and the browser CRASHES, i spent 2 hours on the phone with Tech support doing upgrades and still crashes...so forget using the browser.

2. One of the units has an issue with the power connector, i have to screw around with the plug in order to get the power light to come on and to start charging.

3. I am AFRAID to pope the 3rd one, at this point I think I just want a REFUND...they suck

Hurray! Mine was DOA as well.

...booted into the system recovery, to no avail. Will try one more time before opening a support ticket.

Got mine today. NO plastic covering the unit, just thrown in the box. The AC Adapter was thrown in and the wires were all over the box. There is hair and dandruff all over the neoprene sleeve. And to top it all off, the screen has a nice greasy sweaty palm print on half the screen.

However... It was not DOA and works nicely so I guess I'm neutral.

Suggestions

r00t it.
remove bloatware.
install AnTuTu CPU Master and crank it up to 528mhz.

Googles Voice App is a shame. You can not use the T301 as a GV phone, however you can initiate a call to your cell or landline phone. Had I known this I would have saved my pennies.

GrooVe IP seems like a great App, but sadly this does not work on the T301.

Just got my Cruz Tablet, it rocks. Im posting this with it right now. Well worth the money I spent. I bought two and my wife loves hers too.

Ok, so I ordered TWO of these things and just got them yesterday. Not ONE of them will run the browser for more than 10 seconds before spitting you back to the main screen. What is up with this??? The Velocity website said it was a known problem and to download this "Tweak" tool that fixes it, which it does not.

I can't even get it to read any of my PDF ebooks.

Any chances that doing this will allow me to install a browser that works? I know these things are not all too powerfull but the main reason I bought this was to do some web surfing and reading ebooks. If can't get these to do that then they are going back!

At first I tried getting online thru Google and my browser crashed, but I found if I go directly to any other web sight ,like Facebook or the apps sight, the browser does not crash. I'm using the Cruz to post this. If you want to use a different browser, I think Skyfire is suggested. Loving my Cruz. OH, by the way, I bought 2 of these, and my mother inlaw got one as well, and all 3 had the same "Google" crashing the browser problem, but by doing what I said we are all happily Cruzin the web

Yeah I gotta say I feel a little burned. I wasn't expecting much from a refurb budget tablet with these specs. Still, I wondered why the battery wasn't charging so I popped the lid off and found the battery connector was just crushed in there with the plastic splayed. I did what I could using a screwdriver and tweezers and now it can turn on from the battery. Hopefully a few dabs of crazy glue will keep the leads in nicely. On the up side, at least I didn't have to order a new battery. Especially since it seems that VM is the only seller and their own link to the page where they're sold goes to a 404, lol.

Yep, i had that problem as well. Open the browser with WIFI off, then go in and change the home page to anything other than google. Turn wifi back on, go back to the browser and do a search for "Opera for mips android", click the first or second link and halfway down the screen hit download. This will get you Opera Mobile which is way better than the default browser.

Do remember, I have the T301 r00ted, bloatware removed and have it overclocked to 528 Mhz. Slatedr0id has a nice tutorial on r00ting and getting rid of the bloatware (A MUST!).

Here is a list of what I have done with my T301 tablet (At risk of getting my post deleted or myself banned).

If you brick it, I cannot help you.

r00t, remove bloatware, and install essentials + Google Market

Install CPU Master and overclock to 528Mhz

Install Opera Mobile from the T301 broswer

For anyone else who received a DOA that would not boot, try following the steps from Cruz's website for updating the ROM--after doing this I was able to get the device "working" even though it still struggles like a fish on land.

Been playing around with mine for about a day now. The Kindle app seems to work well, email app seems fine, and facebook app runs no problem.

But the internet, it just wont stop crashing, seems like every time it goes to google.com and then a bunch of other random times. I really enjoy sitting on the couch reading web pages and articles on it when it's not crashing.

This is my first android device so I'm still getting used to the OS. If the web browser wasn't always crashing I would say this is a phenomenal deal but that is a pretty serious issue.

I'm going to try the opera browser suggested above and see if that works better.

Ultimately this probably wont replace my netbook for my living room/couch web surfing but will probably become my new traveling companion and maybe bedside reading.

I'm very pleased with my tablet. Started out of the box, added a 16g class 4 SD card, updated with no problems. I'm enjoying a super color reader and social media machine, with a better Solitaire than my netbook. No concerns about browser kicking back; I have 2 portable wifi surfing/angry birds machines already. My spouse loves not having the reading lamp on when he's trying to go to sleep. $59 well spent.

ok, I've had a little success:
Download Opera 12 for MIPS (Press Release: http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2012/02/27_2/, Direct Download: http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/opera-mobile-12-android-ics-mips/)
Save to SD Card.
Open Astro, browse to sdcard, launch Android_Opera_Mobile_12_MIPSr1_LABS.apk
Don't open Opera yet.
Click the globe icon at the bottom right to launch the browser.
Now a popup will ask which browser to use, check 'Always Remember' and tap Opera.
Do the same for Facebook Mobile.
* Bonus Points. At Opera launch screen, click Manage at the bottom. Tap Facebook and change address to http://m.facebook.com to hit the mobile site instead of the full site.

Browser did not work on mine!

haklesup

quality posts: 0 Private Messages haklesup

The browser on mine always crashes when javascrapt is turned on. If I quickly get to the settings page before it tries to run the script, I can turn off javascrapt but then many web sites do not function properly.

This seems like a pretty serious bug and since not everyone (but some are) complaining about this, I'm hopeful there is a fix or that reloading the firmware will fix it. I put a suppor ticket in and hope to hear back with useful news.

Annoyingly, the Dolphin browser crashes the same way. I'll try opera if I can get it to load ( a version I downloaded failed to install yesterday) This ites because the android market seems to need javascrapt to run.

Last resort, get the SDK and try to fix it somehow.

Cons:
Audio jack is dodgy on some units.
Had to send first one back to get this fixed.
Browsing often quits back to home page after 2-3 minutes use.
Apps selection is abysmal.
It just not a user-friendly reliable device for doing anything productive with an internet connection.

Pros:
For the price it does the job as a back-lit reader (my kindle has gathered dust since I got this). It's fine a a back-up media player for a flight, kids in car.

As a tablet its a POS
As a reader/media player it's just about worth the $ (if you are cheap, like me).

I bought one for my Mother and we can't even get it to connect to Wi-Fi. Have no clue how to fix this issue or if it's even fixable at all.

the installed browser BLOWS. (i couldnt even get to google home page) FIX: get Skyfire for Android 2.2, download "Skyfire_web_browser_4.1.apk" (its free) put it on a SDcard from your computer, then from the ASTRO file manager on your Cruz, click on file and "open app manager" and install it. it will do Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, Google calendar. Google docs didn't work. decent rig for $59. its a little slow, but not that bad! streams YouTube video seamless. enjoy
