Your tomatoes will not grow like that, they naturally want to grow toward the sun. Your random, annoying fact for the day....

This was at Dollar Tree for $1

Should I even look for a YouTube review for this? Lol.

EDIT: Oh well, did it anyways.

I could imagine a squirrel going for the hanging tomatoes.. lol.

Will there be a Woot! R.A.F.T. on this? I haven't seen one posted lately!

PS: I have a feeling this is going to turn up on some Bunnies Ogling Carrots

And you have to buy your own plants.

POSSIBLY THE BEST BoC THREAD EVER. (With a story!~)

Sorry, but you're wrong. My neighbor grows tomatoes with these things every year ... that's why I don't have to. These things work.

My wife is a gardener and you sir are incorrect. Tomatoes will grow anyway you plant them.

My mom uses one of these. Works surprisingly well, keeps the tomatoes off the ground and away from hungry critters, and the tomatoes really do grow well in that direction!

Easy control of watering, no weeds to worry about, and works great if you don't have a garden / vegetable patch to plant it. She hangs hers under a roof overhang.

Anybody know the best time of year to plant, or I guess hang, these things?

I gave one of these to my co-worker (got it in a Bunnies Ogling Carrots he raves how great it worked. Just so you know you need your own soil (obviously?)

Worthless product. Plants by design will attempt to reach up to sunlight. It's just how they work. Attempting to grow them upside down goes against the laws of physics and nature. The plants will actively attempt to grow upwards, because guess what, that's where the light is!

Not only will attempting to grow upside down result in less yield than growing out of a box or the ground, but it also puts the plants in more danger of having their stalks snapped or otherwise damaged, thus killing the plant. These things are less than worthless.

My parents tried these out one year too, they curl up toward the sunlight. If they didn't, when you grow them in the garden they would be rolling in the mud. Maybe if you weight them down when they start out they might grow down, but these ain't potatoes!

These are great because it keeps the bugs in the ground from eating the young fruit but birds are a different story.

These work well, but you need to keep on top of watering them. I suggest buying already started plants instead of attempting to grow them from seed. But, they need a lot of sunlight to grow.

You can use these for peppers as well.

The strawberry version works well for not only strawberries but herbs as well.

I have used these every year for several years. They work "OK". Something like this will never give you the yields that you get in your garden. But these let you use space that is otherwise wasted, like under your eaves in a sunny place. I grow cherry type tomatoes in them and do quite well. You just have to remember to water these EVERY day in hot weather or they will dry out and the roots will cook.

Honestly, they WILL grow, and quite well! I grew some lovely Lemon Boy tomatoes with my Topsy Turvy last year. I got one this year that doesn't hang, but instead sits on a base, and there's three holes, so I am growing three different kinds of tomatoes this year. The only problem I had last year is that I live in a VERY windy area, and two of the three wires holding it up ended up breaking after the end of the growing season.

I also used the pepper ones and grew a metric buttload of hot peppers for my hubby last year, and lots of strawberries for myself. These do work, and they do have advantages if you want to not worry about all the crawlies on the ground getting on your plants... just the spiders. Spiders are everywhere. Yuck.

Seems to have a lot of positive support in the forums. I'm in for 2.

Tried it.. didn't work for me.

I think the roots got too warm and it literally cooked them. (Dallas, TX)

When it gets hot here, you want to the roots at a constant 70-80 ground temp, not 100+.

I bought this and I'm quite excited, I love tomatos and I love things that are upside down so I'm sure it was meant to be!

Have you actually used one? The "thing" about these is that the roots grow towards nutrients. Down is relative, and the plants grow just fine in them. They stay off the ground, so the bugs don't get to them, and sunlight heats the container, which basically encourages the roots to spread rapidly.

They work rather well, and if you don't have a lot of room they're great for getting SOME sort of garden running instead of nothing.

Very true. I started a bunch of catnip from seed and planted them in a strawberry planter. Now my poor addicted kitties will never suffer withdrawals, and since the plants are hanging, they can't get to them before they are grown.

What do you mean they won't grow like that? I saw it on TV, right in TV, they were growing and there were thousands of Tomatoes and people were happy and everything. Do not harsh my mellow man.

These work, but they are messy with the watering and no bottom. And they weigh a lot. If you get them, check how you hang them to make sure it's strong enough.

Varies based on where you live really... If you find that it's late for your area just buy some 50 Day Early Girl tomato plants instead.

I had a couple of these before, both plants were laying on the ground one morning where they had fallen out.

Maybe I'm just to incompetent to work them properly.

For anybody interested, this is "last years design". That's what it says on the one I bought from BigLots for $2.50, and it's the same as this one. The new one they're showing on TV has several holes on the sides to plant multiple plants and it comes with a hanging stand. I actually just planted mine at my dad's house, this past weekend. So, while $4.99 isn't a terrible price, it is the same price you can get them at BigLots for, and you don't have to pay $5 shipping at BigLots. If anybody is interested in the TT pepper planters, they have them at the 99 Cents Only Stores for, of course, only 99 cents. I've seen those at more than on 99 Cents Only location, too, and I did buy a couple of them. I didn't plant that one, yet, though, because Home Depot doesn't have the 4 or 6 packs of seedling peppers. They'll have them soon, though. Right now, they've only got big plants and they're too expensive. Those seedlings are only like $1.99 or $2.99 for 4 or 6 plants. The pepper planter has 7 holes on the sides.

Great way to grow tomatoes! I used these planters last year, as I have a shortage of garden space. To my delite, the harvest was very productive and very rewarding.

A few helpful points to remember...

Plant so that they get full sunlight and rotate the planter every few days. This is easily done by simply turning the planter.

Water the planters at least daily or twice a day when it's very hot and dry. Other than that, enjoy your tomatoes...there's nothing like eating a fresh tomato!

Yep, they've got a strawberry one, with multiple pockets, and even a short one for peppers.

But, yeah, it does strawberries very well, and they're off the ground, so the bugs tend to stay away.

We tried them and they SUCK!!

When you water, the water runs through the hole at the bottom for the the plant stem or trunk. This water carries soil with it and the plant's leaves get soiled with dirt which starves them and limits their photosynthesis ability. As a result, they turn brown, shrivel up and die.

We tried hosing the plants down each time we watered, but it strained the plants and was a constant battle. Only 1 of 3 plants managed to handle the constant soiling and hosing, but it's production was pathetic compared to our other plants grown from the ground up.

Fortunately, we were able to return them for a full refund at Wally's Mart and have never tried them again.

That being said, the price is GREAT at Woot!

These are horrible. Just cut an x out of the bottom of a five gallon bucket if you really want to try this. Mother nature usually gets it right so I suggest just planting the the old fashioned way!

I tried buying from them. They want $10 for 2 Tomato, 2 Strawberry, Plus $7 handling Fee, Plus Shipping. Only, when you go to check out they're charging you $20 instead of $10 and they don't let you see your cart amount total before charging you.

Then when you go to cancel your damn order, they tell you it takes 24-48 hours to show up in their system to cancel it. That is, IF they answer their phone.

I posted an entire discussion thread about my nightmare trying to order directly from them on Deal Woot about a month and a half ago.

You boneheaded ignoramus! (just kidding)

You didn't include postage and handling everyone knows that stuff costs 3 times the product! I guarantee after shipping that deal costs you at least 30 dollars.

Depends on where you're putting it and how much sun it's going to get, and also how hot it is where you live. Last year, I planted tomatoes on my patio like in September. I didn't get a ton of fruit, but the plants grew well. This year. I think I planted too early, as they're already int he ground, but my patio isn't going to get 6 hours of sun until around June. I'll probably plant a couple more plants (or a few), a varying times, just to see when is best for me.

You are better off with a five gallon bucket. Drill a inch and a half hole in the bottom for water to drain, and you can plant one tomato plant on the top of the bucket and grow one out of the hole in the bottom. Do a google search on "five gallon container gardening". You can hang the bucket at eye level and its easy to water, with no bending over or weeding.
