The specs are pretty good but this is strictly a no frills basic camcorder. In fact, it's JVC's worst camcorder. Some thoughts:

1) Only 12 of the 20 English pages in the manual actually teaches you how to use the camera. The rest are warnings, troubleshooting and legalese. That shows you show sparse the features are. And the pages aren't exactly packed with text and figures. All in all, I'd say that there are only 5 pages of real instructions.

2) It doesn't do still photos, which is a common and easy feature to implement. A video is a basically series of still frames, so why not have allow users to capture just one frame? This is a stupid oversight by JVC. Having a still mode allows some users to leave their still camera at home, and is especially useful because of the super optical Zoom. Having to take video first, and then capture the still frame on your is a waste of space and time.

3) HATE THIS: You can't pause while recording. This means that you'll end uo with lots of video snippets of one event/session. As others have pointed out, it's annoying and time consuming to have to concatenate them later. And each snippet has memory overhead so this is also less efficient than having just one file Furthermore, the playback function isn't like a slideshow where each snippet will automatically play in sequence You have to manually play them. Imagine how annoying then it is to attach this to your TV and having to advance to each new snippet even though they're from the same session.

In JVC's defense, most cheaper camcorders, palmcorders (i.e Flip) and digital cameras also can't pause while recording. Samsung digital cameras are a notable exception. Even their $59 models can pause. BUT ... moro.nically, Samsung's own inexpensive <$200 camcorders can't pause either!!!!

This is especially mor.onic since this JVC has a motion detect mode! In other words, it can automatically pause during recording yet it won't allow users to manually do so.

4) Keep in mind that this uses the AVCHD format (a new standard for HD digital camcorders) for HD videos. This format is not easily imported in many older video editing programs, especially free ones. This fact makes Point #3 all the more annoying.

5) The sound is monaural, not stereo. Since this is HD, why skimp on the sound???

6) I also believe that A.I.S. is only digital stabilization, not the superior optical stabilization

If you don't need the 40x optical zoom, I'd hold out for the Samsung SwitchGrip HD Camcorder, which was last offered on April 26th. It costs a little more but is MUCH superior than this VERY basic JVC in virtually every way. For one thing, it can pause while recording. It also has true Optical Stabilization, superior lenses, stereo sound and a BSI sensor for superior low light performance.

I bought one of these last time Woot ran a similar deal. Couldn't be happier. All the features I need in a really nice compact camcorder. The zoom options are dynamite, and picture quality same.

I have this camera. It is fantastic for capturing moments as they happen. You just open up the screen and start shooting! A nice memory card and--if you're like me--an extra battery are necessary, as the battery that comes with it hardly lasts 45 minutes.

I bought an extra battery for around $60 if I remember correctly, and I already had a VERY nice memory card, and I don't feel limited at all. The camera shoots beautiful videos in HD, and captures sound better than I thought (thought it is in mono if that matters). I have never had a problem with it. I am VERY happy with my purchase, which was also on Woot!

I have a video that I modified and put on YouTube. Sorry for the weird scale and the lack of sound. It was done for some friends and the content mattered more than the quality. Have fun and good luck with your purchase!

I bought one of these last woot, for shooting gigs. I do sync sound anyway, so the mono onboard sound is no big deal - which is good because the sound level at gigs peaks out the onboard mic pretty hard.

Here, I have samples!

This is a video from a house concert in February - shot indoors, it has sync sound. Also has some swears in it 'cause I was doing my Skyrim joke song - "Open Mic Night at the Winking Skeever" - and, well, swears:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYlTh6-3dBs

Here's a 100% worksafe how-to video I shot with it last week when I was making a new sound baffle for my studio. ALL the audio here is the onboard microphone, so you can hear it at various distances and circumstances:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toz0DozVNas

All editing done with iMovie.

I like the camera a lot. The 40x optical zoom is really nice in gigs and the stabiliser makes it usable handheld and the image quality seems to hold up pretty well. And I particularly like that it runs straight off the adaptor (useful in gigs) and takes really big SDHC cards.

I do wish it had more manual settings. But, for the price? And my budget? I'm thinking of grabbing another one now that it's back again.

--- I agree 20 pages total is short, though that ratio or warning seems average these days.

I bought one of these last year to fill a specific need, and I couldn't be happier.

In an attempt to do multi-camera product review videos on a budget, I wanted an extra camcorder to handle a close-up angle of the product table, but I couldn't afford to spend much on it. The zoom lens of this camcorder sounded very appealing, and it has worked out perfectly to suit my needs.

You can see an example of its use in this video here -

http://youtu.be/0puBcNWAH7A

it is the one used for the front facing close up shots like the ones found at the :53 second mark, the 1:46 mark, etc. Keep in mind that this was a green-screen composite, and even with such a cheap camcorder, I was able to achieve enough dynamic range to pull a decent key.

You can also see it in the opening introduction shot of this video:

http://youtu.be/hth6t24-Ihc

and it did a decent job for what I needed, but that one may not be the best representation because it was down-rezzed for post before uploading.

But there are a couple of caveats to be mindful of with this model.

1.) Solid imaging balance is typically achieved as a collaboration of the lens system and the sensor. The lens in this model is incredible, especially for the price. But the sensor is pretty lousy, so it may not produce great results in some scenarios, including low-light conditions, etc. I would equate this sensor to be roughly equivalent to a really good quality webcam, but as it is a low-priced budget camcorder, I think the lousy quality of the sensor is a heavy factor for it being so low priced. I get good results from it because I use it in well lit controlled shooting environments.

2.) The interface is a bit klunky. I use complex camcorders for my professional work, but I also have several cheap pocket camcorders for playing around with, such as models by Panasonic, Kodak, and Flip. I see these budget models as being intended largely for a technophobic or convenience crowd that just wants a quick and simple approach to catching a shot. Just a couple of buttons and a simple interface is beneficial here, but this Everio model is not as simple and comfortable to use as other devices in its class. You can figure it out quickly enough, but the interface just doesn't seem very intuitive.

3.) Although the description says the footage can be uprezzed to 1080p, it actually shoots in 720p, which is perfectly fine for my needs, and probably most other folks too, especially since you're shopping for a camcorder in this price range. If you're shopping for a 1080p device with stunning crystal clear optics, you're going to spend a lot more than what this Everio is going for.

4.) The codec is AVCHD Lite. This is a newer formulation of consumer level HD codecs, and while I won't get into the geeky specs about it, I'll just say that it can be a pain to work with in some cases. Your editing application of choice may need to be updated to handle this codec as it is not compatible with all applications and platforms. Several Windows-based apps may handle it fine, (and it comes with a Windows based application...for what it's worth) but Mac users may need to jump through a few hoops to successfully import this footage. (It can be done, I do it regularly). In some cases, where importing from the SD card through a card reader doesn't work, you might find success importing via USB directly from the camcorder. (Don't ask - it's complicated.) And I'm not sure about it's compatibility with tablet-based video editing apps.

5. The battery life for this thing is unquestionably the worst I've ever seen. Stock up on those batteries because you're gonna need 'em if you plan to be out and about for a bit of shooting.

That all being said, If you can work with the AVCHD Lite codec, I think this thing is a steal at this price. The form factor is light and comfortable enough, I like having the built-in lens cover. (very handy), HDMI and component output options are cool, and in my opinion, a decent 40x zoom lens at this price point is pretty much incomparable.

I hope that info is helpful for your decision making.

I was wondering what the fastest frame rate of this recorder is. I'd want to use it to record golf swings and play them back in slo-mo. If this camera isn't optimal for this, what model (within $100 of this price) would you guys recommend? Also, what editing program (free or inexpensive) would be good for playback? Just for personal use, doesn't have to be professional quality. Thanks, I'll hang up and listen to your response.

My Husband uses our Everio to record local bands just about every weekend. The camera does great in good lighting. In dim lighting, not terrible, but not that great.

As far as sound, it seems to handle pretty well the very loud metal bands that he films. However, every once in a while the mic just wigs out and all you'll hear on that take is fuzz. It seems to reset itself when you stop and then begin recording again, but you don't know it's happened until you've gotten home and watched the videos that were taken, so that's a bummer when it happens.

You can see some of the videos here:

http://www.youtube.com/user/chewblakka76/videos

They were all taken with our JVC Everio and all sound is straight through the camera (not synced from another source).

Thanks for the recommendation @flareit. Battery life is my only complaint with this camera. I have rigged a USB battery pack to mine, but it is a Rube Goldberg solution at best (tho did not cost me a dime more).

Can you share your experience with the bestbatt.com battery? My rigged USB battery generates a whine in the audio, does the bestbatt battery do that? What kind of recording time are you getting?
