The only negative comment I can make is....well, now I can't live without it. I use it for everything and haven't fired up my PC since. Android absolutely pwns Crapple.

No; you're wrong. We've had this conversation about other products and you were wrong there too. Here is Best Buy's list of Xoom products. There is no product that is $315; there is one Xoom that's the family edition (missing features) with only 16GB for $320. This model is the third one down and it's $329.99.

Oh, and the only link to Best Buy on page 2 is to the new, rather than refurbished, model. Semper fi indeed!

I think the users manual is available here

http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/Support/US-EN/TABLETS/XOOM-with-Wi-Fi/Documents/StaticFiles/MOTOROLA%20XOOM-UMTS-MOTOROLA-XOOM-WiFi-User-Guide.pdf

Can someone clarify the GPS issue ? Does it have a true GPS or is it wifi ? If I am in the woods with no wifi available, will it find me ?

I need a tablet constantly at work since I am always moving from conference room to the office and back. I could care less about how slick the interface or *launcher* is. What I care about is that when I start an APP ... it WORKS ! and continues to work! And does not have holes that compromise my private data.

So I bought an iPad3 for $500 (my very first APPLE product). I would have gladly got an Android tablet ... IF ...

- it had the same Retina display (WOW!!!)
- performed as fast
- had a large selection of well-designed Apps like GoodReader, Flipboard, Garageband
- was as secure (jailbreaking a tablet makes it vulnerable. Not for me!)
- had access to the INCREDIBLE iTunes University (worth the price of admission).

It comes to APPS .. APPS and APPS. Don't get sold on silly specs like dual-core and quad-core. The speed of a CPU is not going to compensate for the unavailability of an APP you really wished it had. I would much rather have a slower CPU with APPS that I need ... than a faster CPU tablet with very limited apps but allows me to play with all those silly but slick *Launchers*.

If that does not convince you ... read this news article from 2 days ago ..

This is a decent deal, for a very good tablet. What I like about the Xoom is that it is Google's development platform for tablet versions of Android, which explains why it got ICS so quickly. It is well-supported.

What I would very much like to find is a really, really good deal on an HD Dock, maybe about $30 or so. I missed out on the selloffs of these things by Verizon.

Not really a DEAL. Nothing against this specific tablet. Google's Android delivery is flawed. Being a Linux developer, I would have much preferred an alternative to Apple. But I have to call a spade a spade. As it stands, reputed developers prefer programming for IOS since they have less headaches caused by hardware variants. Its a Android mess.

do tablets (this one in particular) have cd-drives? I've never had one before :/ whats the biggest difference between this and a actual comp (not use-ability, more specs)

or is this basically a big smart phone.. without the phone? (yes, im aware of the google phone)

$300 is still too much to pay for this $900 tablet.

When it was first released for stated high price, I chose the iPad 1 over it and still consider first generation iPad to be a better experience.

I fully back-up what you say. Having owned three Android tablets and two iPads, I can say there is no comparison between the two tablet platforms. The iPad does what it's supposed to... And more! Android is a totall mess apart from for cell phone use. This Xoom was released at the same time as the iPad 2 and was a bug-filled device and only helped emphasize how good the iPad was.

Nice ad. I'm sure Apple will have your check in the mail tomorrow.

I've got this Xoom and it is great. Wouldn't ever bother with Apple and their Gulag mentality. And to answer the earlier question (again), the WiFi model (this one) has full hardware GPS. You'll need to load maps in advance but that can be easily done.

I guess it goes to show that one man's garbage is another's treasure. I had a G-Tab and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I tried many different ROMs and all had significant issues. Performance was sluggish. Battery life mediocre. Applications paled badly compared to what's available on iPad. But the absolute worst part, and what made the G-tab worthless to me, was the abominable screen quality.
On the iPad, instead of bothering with an HDMI cable you can directly stream to an AppleTV box using AirPlay (an optional HDMI dongle is available). There are also awesome games that use the iPad as a controller/display and stream a different picture to the TV. Cool uh. Nothing of the sort on Android... because of market fragmentation.

Yuck, if it's not an IPS panel, I'm not getting it. Now I remember the reason I never got this tablet. After you've used a Kindle Fire, iPad, or Nook Color/Nook Tablet, it's really difficult to tolerate the crappy non-IPS screens on tablets like the Xoom.

It's also still a "Recommended" tablet, as are all 16 in the 9-10" Screen category. Test results are "Very Good" for "Ease of Use", "Display", "Versatility" and "Portability", and are "Excellent" for "Touch Response".

The spread in scores for all 16 is 75 for the lowest (Wifi Xoom 32G, WiFi Acer A200 16G, WiFi Asus Eee Pad Transformer 16G) to 85 (for the Apple iPad 3 16G). I wouldn't exactly call that a wide range.

It's also interesting to note that the bottom 2 of 11 in the 7-8 inch screen category are the only 2 CR Best Buys, the Amazon Kindle Fire with a score of 64, and the B&N Nook Tablet with a score of 62. Looking at the price column, it's probably because these 2 are half the cost of all the other tablets.

The ratings also *only* show the recommended 27 tablets of 44 tested.

I love my Xoom and bought another one for my wife who loves it too. Lots of apps are available - I can access and play movies from my home network (I use ES File Explore to access files from my Windows shares and MX Player to play them - both are free).

Other apps I like:
Where's my droid - free and can help locate lost Androids.
AndroidVNC - easy to connect to VNC running on my Windows box.
Titanium Backup - once you root, can use it to backup everything on your Xoom.
Andtoid does a free app a day - some good, some OK. (http://www.amazon.com/mobile-apps/b/ref=sa_menu_adr_app4?ie=UTF8&node=2350149011)
Google apps like Map, Earth, and Sky.

And lots, lots more - mostly free.

I rooted mine especially to help with back-ups. One thing about rooting, you have to unlock the system which wipes out the data (you can backup a lot of things put not all the apps, etc.). Root it before you have set everything up on your system. Once rooted, you can make a backup to your SD card and always get back to that place. Rooting was a little complicated but not bad - be aware it voids the warranty but if you are a bit computer savvy you should not have any problems.

More information can be found on this site (http://forum.xda-developers.com/):

I really like that you have so much control over your device especially after you root. I can not say enough about how much I use and have enjoyed my Xoom.

I bought this at Target on clearance (exact model and new, not refurb) for $ 199 about 3 weeks ago. ICS upgrade was easy, on air and no rooting needed. Battery life not great compare to iPad2 but can't complain a $200. I like the price, Android, and abundance of free Android apps, but dislike the battery life, thickness, proprietary charger, lack of speed or smoothness (on loading web pages comparing to iPad's). I got the Moto keyboard to go with Xoom and it's not that good (not much feel, plus it's wider than the tablet so can't fit in a case with the Xoom). Btw I complain about battery life because I'm getting about 5-6 hours use and I'm not doing video/sound. Run time is no better than half of an iPad2. But at $200 all can be forgiven.

I can assure you that the screen is anything but crappy ... I've used this Xoom for 7 months, and have also played extensively with NC (wife's) and iPads (sister in law) and do not agree with your assessment at all ... guess it takes all types ...
