I have the wifi versions of BB Playbook, Xoom and iPad2. I got the Xoom from Woot. Where PB and X outshines the iPad is flexibility as ANY computer reads it as external drive and can copy and paste everything between itself and PB and X. Not so with iPad! Everything has to go via iTunes and 1 computer only. Absolutely hates it. And then Apple with closed OS don't accept every file type. I went on recent overseas trip with X and iPad (did not had PB yet) and loved it that I could load my daily photos on X to view. Not so with iPad as I did not had iTunes or my computer. For me the PB and X is much more practical. Apps on iPad is very good (and better), but apps is not just everything. I will take X anytime above iPad. There are not much difference on battery and screen between X and iPad, so it drill down on usage and apps.

$299 Manufacturer refurbished Motorola Xoom 32GB Verizon 4G LTE

Better deal (free shipping, though same purchase price) than this Woot if anyone cares about 3G/4G access on Verizon.

Note: Sold by Lucky Dog Electronics via eBay, with more than 10 available as of this post.

performancewise, still going to hold its own against the ipad 3 considering the only real upgrade there was the screen resolution.

Don't deceive people. The Xoom tests behind the iPad 1, trails behind the iPad 2, and is not even close to an iPad 3. You are attempting to trick people into thinking the Xoom leads.

I haven't really needed it, as 32gb has been more than enough, but it would be nice to know how to do it. Any advice? It doesn't seem to recognize it or want to mount it when I try.

The Xoom must be totally powered down and then power up with the micro-sdhc card inserted in-order to have it recognized (I recommend inserting the sd card slot cover in reverse during the insertion so that you do not accidentally lose the sdcard in the ersatz storage slot -- practically impossible to retrieve!!)! Use Astro or other file managment apps to manage the storage on the sd card - but I don't think you can just readily manage the files directly from the Xoom, best when connected to computer or the files are already stored on the sd card?

Yeah... Let's not get crazy here. I like my Xoom a lot, but on its best day it MIGHT BE close to an iPad I. The only reasons to get this instead of an iPad are price, and a preference for Android over iOS. If neither or only one of those is important to you, go with the iPad.

With the IP2 you have half the memory, lower resolution screen and lose the ability to (easily) run any apps or view any pages that require Flash. Between the two, I think the MZ (based as much on the fact that it is less expensive as anything else) is at least the IP2's equal.

Or if you want SD support ... or better full-site browsing for sites with Flash (of which there are MANY ... not a big deal on phones, but a drag on tablets) ... or the better camera ...

To be fair, the other reason to buy iPad is that the closed OS will generally mean better stability/reliability, which many people obviously prefer, and are willing to give up the better flexibility and interoperability ... my sister-in-law fits into this group, and the iPad is an excellent choice for her. In fact, while I really like my Xoom, and have enjoyed exploring Android, if the price were the same I may have chosen the iPad just for compatibility with my iPhone ...

I bought one of these from Woot! back in November and I really love it. Instantly upgradable to ICS 4.0.4, the current build, and a nice piece of hardware overall.

I bought it without knowing what I'd do with it but its become my best friend for at-home browsing, e-mail, Reddit, etc. With a case its as good or better than my laptop for use on the couch or in bed.

Also, I use it as a major piece of my home media center for streaming HD video and whatnot.

At this price, definitely worth it.

Memory is a deceiving thing when comparing Android and iOS devices. The simple fact is, the Dalvic interpreter is a memory hog, so an Android device requires twice the RAM as an equivalent iOS device to do basically the same types of things.

Not quite the same. The Motorola Family edition you linked, in addition to half the built in memory has a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera versus the 2 megapixel camera in the Xoom on today's Woot. So...half the memory (16 vs. 32) and a lower spec front facing camera for 20 (25 with shipping) dollars less.

I almost gave in to the ipad hype. But then I got an ipad for work use. I can see why some would like it but I keep running into major hurdles. For one, trying to easily transfer misc media files to it is a gigantic pain in the butt compared to an android device. And that's what I primarily use a tablet for, whether it be training videos, movies/tv, music, whatever. With android it doesn't matter how I get the file onto the tablet, I can browse to where it's at and open it with whatever app I have that media type set to open with.

Most importantly, I don't need my charging cable with me and don't need itunes on whatever PC I'm at. I just pop out the memory card, sick it in the PC and copy whatever media/documents/whatever and done.

Some of your claims (especially for the iPad 1 vs. the Xoom) are objectively not so. See the original AnandTech review of the Xoom running Honeycomb: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4191/motorola-xoom-review-first-honeycomb-tablet-arrives/

With ICS, the Xoom is an all around better experience than the Xoom on Honeycomb. And it is quite fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsaQqPxlE2c&t=5m32s

I had the last one, which was $319 on Woot! It says refurbed, but they are new and have the one-year warranty, right? I ended up selling mine. Preferred my 10-inch Toshiba netbook with extended battery, since I type a lot and didn't care for using a keyboard and mouse with the Xoom. So I sold it for almost what I paid for it and bought a Kindle Fire, which I prefer because of the smaller form factor for moving around. I just never took advantage of the Xoom features, don't play games, etc. I actually prefer the Fire, which I got on Amazon Deal of the Day for $139 (an open box special), because the 7-inch screen is just right for Netflix and Amazon Prime, and as an e-reader it's just easier to manage. To me, the $200 difference not worth it. But I really did think the Xoom was an excellent tablet. Just got tired of looking at it sitting there. I find I am using the Fire much more.

I pulled the trigger all the way to the last step and saw woot is charging tax! Broke the deal for me.. Even with the coupon code for tax, it only reduces $5... For $50 more u can get a BRAND NEW one on amazon. And they arent charging tax on there.

With 32 GB of flash storage? No, don't think that you can. Around 370 dollars* for a 32 GB version as is cheap as it gets for a new unit.** See http://www.amazon.com/MOTOROLA-XOOM-Android-10-1-Inch-Wi-Fi/dp/B0045FM6SU

*One brand new seller lists it for around 323 with shipping as I write this, but the seller has zero history.

*And really, who cares if it's "BRAND NEW"? Same one year warranty applies, and WOOT's refurbs tend to be indistinguishable from brand new in most every way except for the packaging.

Yo, I hope I'm not going to rehash what's been said. In a few hours another woot will be up and all will be for naught. I've owned one for 5 months. Concerning the hardware itself: I'm not an engineer but I was impressed what the teardown sites showed inside. Many will agree that even though it's an early tablet, Motorola threw everything at this and did a lot right. On Android: Once you get the automatic upgrade to ICS 4.0.4 you are seeing this hardware behave the way it should have run a year ago when it launched. On Apps: I use this as an ereader (Kindle, Moon+), email, web surfer and a movie machine. I play a few games, and Angry Birds Space on this is awesome fun. Now, let's get in to the Apple/Android thingy. You've probably heard the term "walled garden" used for Apple. my daughter has an Ipod Touch, and we both hate the fact that everything has to move through Itunes. If Apple permits it, Itunes will let it through. OTOH, I've played with computers, Apple and PC, since the 1980s. If you are very comfortable working within windows (creating/naming/moving files/installing software) you can hook up the xoom to your PC with a usb cable and drag books, music and movies back and forth with ease, including to an installed microsd card. For those of you wanting to move movies on board, I'm having great success using DVD Catalyst on the PC and MX video player on the Xoom. This is what is known as a Google Experience Device (GED) since their buy-in to Motorola Mobility. I anticipate support for the near future with at least another update or two before the electronics world moves on. That said, this Xoom has greatly exceeded my expectations, and that's without any outside modifications. It's my third and by far most expensive tablet (paid way more than this Woot price), but the quality and enjoyment totally smokes what I used before.
