As a retired, but still somewhat active service tech, I would advise staying clear of any HP or Compaq branded systems.
I refuse those when owners seek service since HP is atrocious in supporting their gear and those who service them.

I was looking at this model over at the egg:

After the coupon code, it's the same price as the Samsung but has 4 USB ports, two of which are USB 3.0, but the processor is a bit slower.
Hard drive is bigger, though...

Tough call. Also looking at some other models. Trying to keep the cost down, as I gotta spend a bunch of money on other things for her in the near future.

Or buy on Woot for $379, $5 shipping, and $30 tax in NY for total of $414 (3 Month Warranty)

So, for an extra $24 one can buy new rather than refurbished with an extra 9 months warranty... Still on the fence with this one.

It has horrible throughput for an N card sometimes as little as 1.5mbits and it is a known issue with this computer. I had this machine until a few days ago when I sold it. I put another 4gb of ram in it and upgraded to a 7200rpm Western Digital Black hard drive and still had some performance issues with it as well. Just not worth the money. Sorry woot.

Funny you should write that. My other Samsung RC512 (from woot!) had this issue. I looked around the samsung site, noticed a new wifi driver and now my RC512 is all right on the wifi. I wonder.

Actually this is a quad core but the clock speed is 1.5 so it does not meet the minimum requirements. The total is fast enough. But 1.5 is awfully slow. I doubt diablo III makes use of quad cores to the extent that 4 1.5 cores would run ok.

potatochobit wrote:let me first say, people who expect a 300$ laptop to perform like a full-priced laptop need to check in with reality.

This processor uses a llano A6 chip which is an amazing value. In regards to gaming, the problem is this is a G, which means it does not use dual graphics, both the CPU and graphics are handled in the processor.

you can still play modern games like batman, albeit on medium settings. Older games like WoW will run on medium-high. this model also doesnt seem to have bluray.

What makes llano special is that it has far better graphic performance than intel's onboard counterpart at a low price point.

someone is going to comment you can get an nvidia card in your intel laptop. yes you can, and alienware laptops sell for 1400$. your CPU means very little if your graphic card cannot do the work.

If you don't really care about graphics, then you don't really need a llano laptop but the low price still makes it a very attractive to everyone.

if you are a serious gamer, I would choose the next model up with dual graphics. A6 or A8 is fine but it should have a discrete card labeled 'M', such as 6750M.

A super informative quality post for all possible buyers. Now to make my decision if we need another laptop in the home. Thanks potatochobit!

zecias wrote:I doubt the gpu would need that much ram. mid to high end desktop GPUs can perform fine at 1080p resolutions with higher resolution textures using 512 MB GDDR5. DDr3 and GDDR3 are roughly the same; GDDR5 has around twice the bandwidth as GDDR3(assuming same clock rates and bit rates). With an intergrated, low -end GPU like this, i would expect low end textures and they will be run at a ~720p resolution. I can't imagine that the GPU will use 1 GB let alone 2 GB of ram.

Less about the amount, more about gaining memory bandwidth through dual-channel operation. even 2x2gb would outperform the 1x4gb configuration in anything using the ram alot (as the onboard graphics will when gaming).

If it's not utilizing 4 cores, Turbocore up to 2.4ghz will be in effect.

I have a slightly different Samsung laptop so I wanted to address the concern with the touchpad being off center -- it doesn't take much time to get used to it, provided you do not alternate between that and another laptop with standard touchpad placement. Also on another note, they are the coolest laptop I have ever tried, and I have tried many. The warmest points are at the wrist wrest but they are just warm points not hot points.

tljx wrote:I'm afraid I have to disagree with that. Unless you don't have enough RAM to start with (and 4GB is more than enough for most games + whatever background OS processes are running), adding more RAM to a budget system won't noticeably increase graphic performance.

A lot of people seem confused about this. Adding a second 4gb stick would let your ram run in dual channel mode, which will greatly increase the memory bandwidth. With llano it's all about the bandwidth.

Okay, so I bought it, the damage is done! =)~ After searching for 2 wks, hours upon hours for another laptop around this price, this one seems to have what I'm looking for and more.

I had an Acer 17.3", dual core, 4 GB laptop, $500, that I bought at the end of 2009. It wasn't really used much until that following spring of 2010, and it was nothing but problems the whole time. First, where the power cord goes into the thing (switch?), it was constantly beeping from shutting on and off.I thought I had a bad power cord, got another one, NOPE! Same thing! Something loose inside the switch. Next the screen cracked when I accidentally shut it with my mouse laying on the keyboard. Okay, that one was my fault, but I didn't slam it shut or anything, so I don't think it should have cracked so easily. Hooked it up to another monitor. Lastly, turned it on one day and nothing...I'm assuming the hard drive died, as the on light came on, but there was nothing. It was also very heavy, I think close to 10 lbs, not something you want to lug around. Whoever says Acers are good computers, I have to say I got a real lemon! It only lasted 2 yrs!

15.6 is a diagonal measurement of the screen.

I'm more amazed Smartpost moved that quickly.

EDIT: Scratch that, shipped UPS and is coming a day early (tomorrow).

Hopefully with a battery.

EDIT EDIT: Came today, with battery. Minor physical blemish on the lip, not terribly happy but hardly the worst thing in the world.

Keyboard is surprisingly easy to get used to, just takes some movement of the hands and I personally am not used to the chicklet keys.

There is almost no BIOS to speak of in this laptop. Few options to change with none that I can find to activate a Turbo CPU mode. Any ideas where this option is located?

Also, mine arrived on 5.17.2012 with the laptop, battery, and charger. No issues thus far as I can see.
