Personally I would pass on this. The higher end models have features that you want to have. One of the best is the what-did-they-say function. Basically a button on the remote that you press that backs the stream up 7 seconds without having to re-buffer the content.

If you ever get a green screen using an HDMI cable, it's most likely not the cable. Don't panic. Just go into settings and switch the screen saver to on after 30 minutes and the "old typewriter" clock. That made the recurring green screen go away on my Roku XD model.

I'm Bryan. Nice to meet you, Wooter.

Also I will add that my father-in-law has this unit. They just bought a new LCD TV and the TV and the Roku wouldn't work together over HDMI. The TV would freak out and not display anything due to it not being able to figure out the format the Roku was trying to feed it.

Could have been a cable issue, but a quick online search showed it seemed to be these older units.

Wow, a very handy feature in this day of mumbling actors... I have a huge home theater sound system and I listen to some lines over and over and sometimes never do figure out what they said.

It might actually be IMHO Roku dominates on getting content providers to create channels for them. They have a lot more big name streaming providers on board than just about any other platform.

OK, I'm new to the streaming player thing.
Is there a particular model of Roku that will ALSO let me stream music/vids from my NAS?

If not, which brand/device has the same online streaming ability as the roku AND the ability to stream directly from my NAS or any PC on my network?

Thanks,
Keep Calm

Honestly if it wasn't for the channels available on the Roku box unplugging from cable/satellite wouldn't have succeeded. We never run out of things to watch.

What are you talking about? These are great. I've bought 2 from Woot. This is a good price. Especially if you have an older TV and don't care about 720p. For me the biggest draw back of this model is the g wireless, but I put mine in the office where the modem is and hard-wired it.

You probably want the higher end models. They have USB ports. This isn't quite down your alley, but do to their slightly better guts they might handle your needs better. Also there might be a "channel" developed for that.

Turned this up: http://roksbox.com/home/

Has your name on it.

Also...like I said in other posts...IMHO Roku has the best content offering. Most is pay for services though. Like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Amazon Prime streaming, Vudu, etc. etc. There are plenty of free content channels though.

We only pay for internet, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. Comes to about $80. If you have TV and internet chances are you are paying more than that. We NEVER run out of shows/movies/things to watch.
