If it mounts like a GoPro then yes it will work with the suction cup mount. If used in the housing it will need a tripod adapter (not sure if it can me mounted on a tripod without the housing).

Does anyone know if I can use this camera as a feed to a monitor when it is not recording? I am a rower and would like to have the camera facing the direction I am rowing and be able to view what the camera sees on an external 7" TV that I can look at.

Since the question has come up... yes it will record while connected to a charger. It just won't record while connected to a computer.

Anyone taken it beyond 65' deep?
C'mon guys!!! it is an idea but not for divers. The GoPro is still the way to go unless you can make this one go at least 140'. In that case, I'll purchase it instead of the GoPro.
Intova is also making a similar product for a little more money and can go 180'. My question now is...

Why can't you?

BS. That's not to say that doesn't happen, but for some products you have a lot of, you allot certain quantities per sale/per day.

Tell me otherwise, I'd be happy to be wrong.

The GoPro HD (original one) does not do this.

The effect you're referring to (I think this is the one) is called "rolling shutter" --

And yes, the GoPro HD does it too.

OK - Personal Experience speaking here.. I have some once in a lifetime video that I shot a few years back, and at the time HD was really expensive, it would have cost me about $1k to get a HD camera, and the SD(or whatever) was only around $300. So I choose to get SD, reasoning 2 things: (1) Would I ever watch the video anyway? probably not more then once. (2) Would it really matter? I would still get to re-watch it over and over anyway...

Biggest mistake ever. (1) I watch it all the damn time, foolish mistake, I watch it when I talk about it, with new people, I have it on my iphone now, some times I just watch it, cheer me up, or whatever, frankly I am not sure why I watch it, but its fun. (2) Low quality ruined it. Grainy footage, things passing by really quickly instead of being in focus, just blur, colors are not super good.

Don't make the mistake, especially for ~$150 difference.

Good luck, and have fun!

They could, but they didn't. Perhaps because making it able to go deeper would only appeal to a small percentage of their customers, but increase the cost for everybody?

If Intova's or GoPro's product works better for you, buy it.

sco3tt wrote:I'm thinking of using this for timelapse recording a 12-hour road trip, but the 2.5 hrs of battery life is a deal-killer unless it can be externally powered.

The manual says it can be charged via USB. Do any of you owners know if it can also record while charging? And would the charging keep ahead of the discharge over 12 hours? According to the manual it takes 3.5-4 hours to charge the battery but only 2.5 to drain it.

The AC adapter will allow you to record indefinitely (limited of course to storage size... 32 gig card recommended) but you would need a DC inverter in your vehicle to use the adapter. The reason a 'normal' USB cable will only charge and not power the camera is the pinout of the USB mini B connector. The USB standard has voltage on pin 1 and common on pin 5 with pin 4 unused (pin 2 and pin 3 are for data transfer). The AC adapter (which both charges and powers the camera) has pin 4 AND pin 5 wired as common. So, to power AND charge your camera simultaneously from a DC source you will need to cut your AC adapter cord and solder on a connector (mini phone jack, etc) and do the same with your USB charge cable so that you can interchange the correctly wired mini B connector from the AC adapter. Your DC USB power source MUST be a full 1 amp (1000 mamp) for this to work... a typical laptop will NOT supply enough power. I use a Zagg Sparq 2.0 for 6X battery life on the go and a 5 volt 1 amp cigarette lighter USB adapter (Duracell... cheap from Big Lots) for vehicle power and all works well. Of course, as stated above, a lightweight DC inverter and the AC adapter supplied will do the trick too.

Edit... Just tested the above modified cable with my laptop and it does indeed provide enough juice to power the camera even with the battery removed but YMMV.

Just bought another, It's pretty nice having a wider lens then the iphone.

The menu on the camera allows you to select

1080P
720/60
720/30
WVGA

I question I have is: Has anyone used 1080p with a class 4 card, I'm using a class 10 32gb, but I sure would like to buy the cheaper card. I just not sure what I can get away with. Anyone try a Class 4?

I got one of theses the last time they were available here and they are great. Nearly identical to the Hero Go Pro 2 HD (I have both) and the Swann comes with two items that make it a better value above all other items. The remote control and the attachable lcd screen. The strap mount that comes with the Swann camera is great for attaching the camera to a backpack or M.O.L.L.E. rig. I use mine on my motorcycle, my back pack and my tactical vest for paintball. Great video and stills. The remote makes taking photos and start/stopping video simple and quick. I reccommend this highly especially for those wanting an action cam but who don't want to spend the $240+ for the Go Pro II (I get the motorsports edition Go Pro II for $243.98 from my local Honda Dealership thru a friend). The included mounts make it easy to make your own chesty mount with just a few straps or by just attaching to your pak. I also have teh Swann Bullet action cam which I attach to my guns and paintball marker using a 1" tactical light picatinney mount or on my paintball mask. That combined with the Freestyle mean I can get multiple angles.

How is the sound when in the waterproof case and bolted to the outside of a car? I am looking to use this when I race my car, but I am torn between this and the Hero2 motorsports. Also, is the remote IR or RF, do you have to have it in line of sight to actuate it? Thanks in advance.

I understand that you can get general impressions from youtube videos but is a video compressed to youtube specifications really a true representation of the original video file's quality?

For example I have seen artifacts where moving subjects were grainy but the picture sharpened up considerably when the motion slowed down.

Was that an artifact of the camera or an artifact of youtube?

Or are WOOT OFFS just a way to get us to think we need to buy NOW or never?

A Woot!-off is not a liquidation. If they kept every item up until all stock was exhausted, Some of them would last forever.

I've never seen anyone comment that they felt that just because they "sold out" an item on a Woot!-off that the product was out of stock completely, forever, nor have I seen seen the "now or never" concept raised in the comments. I assumed that everyone understood that the "sold out" button means nothing more than "we're not offering this item any more today."

Eventually, they will sell the very last one of these in stock, but it won't necessarily be during a Woot-off. The last few stragglers will likely end up in bags o' crap. And we'll never know for sure.

Ok I just spoke to customer support at Swann who informed me that after putting it on to charge overnight, that I had "overcharged the battery and fried the camera. It is like any cellphone, if you charge it too long it will destroy the device." He also told me that the manual specifically mentions that you should not charge it longer than recommended. I looked through the manual to find this, but it does not say that anywhere in the manual. He then informed me that my actions constituted "misuse and that the warranty would not cover a replacement." I informed him that he was rebel scum and obviously had no knowledge of how modern cell phones work and that the manual did not back up his claims. He created a case number and told me to call back "in about an hour" to speak with someone about a warranty claim.

Consider this a fair warning, this company does not value their customers nor do they have any intention to honor their warranty.

You hear the mechanically transmitted noises through the case, but no wind noise as the case doesn't have anyway for the sound to get through. The remote seems to be RF and we have had it work up to 30 ft away.

You just got this, after buying it from the Woot-off.

What on EARTH are you doing, talking to anyone at Swann?

You contact Woot, and return and get a good one.

You never go through a manufacturer when you just bought something, you're doing it wrong. So wrong, it makes me wonder if you did mess up the automatic charging too..

I have both this camera and the GoPro suction mount. It totally works! (and any other GoPro mounts for that matter).

Also, sound quality inside the case isn't great. It's very muted, and when stuck to a car at speed, the camera kind of rattles around inside the case a bit and makes lots of 'clicking' sounds in addition to the wind noise. Engine noise is pretty much lost. However, crap audio on cars is a common problem for GoPro cameras too. Everyone I've talked to in my Car Club that uses these things (and cares about audio) places a digital audio recorder under the hood or in the cabin to capture quality audio and overlays it on the video in Post-Production.

HTH!

I bought this during the last woot-off and then took it white water rafting. I used the 720p@60fps because it gives you the wide angle.

I really like the video it took (here is a 15 second clip: http://youtu.be/WW-0ewmcxb0)

It looks really good on my TV. The accessories that it comes with is amazing for the price. Someone else on my rafting trip had a GoPro but they were still waiting for the LCD screen to come in and hers was a lot more expensive.

I found the battery life to be around 1:45 or so, not the 2:30/3:30 promised.

30 minutes of 720p took about 2 GB on my microSD card.

One bummer thing is that the laser doesn't work through the waterproof case, which would be really helpful for aiming it. I ended up with one run where I just had the camera pointed a little too low.

Overall though, I'm very happy with it.
