Would this be a good set for a novice? I don't know much about golf but I'm trying to avoid a present that will just be aggravating for a beginner.
This will be a pretty good set for a novice.
These irons/wedges are pretty forgiving. (meaning that off center hits still go a decent distance and generally in the direction they're meant to.) They clubs won't hit the ball the furthest, nor will they produce a ton of backspin, but they'll work just fine and provide confidence at address.
The driver / woods are of decent quality and, although not very long off the tee, are equally forgiving.
The shafts in the clubs are OK. Fine for a beginner.
Grips are just fine as well.
The bag is of pretty good quality; easy to carry for 18 holes, or can easily be put on a cart (pull or riding) should you choose that method. Plenty of storage space, dual straps for carrying comfort, etc.
Now, if you've played a few rounds of golf and you shoot in the 90s, pass on this set.
Here's why:
The irons won't give a ton of distance and you won't be able to get hardly any backspin on the ball meaning that you'll be hitting a 5 iron (lower trajectory) from a distance where you'd be hitting a 7 or an 8 (higher trajectory) with a better set, and you'll have a hard time sticking the ball and holding a green on any shots longer than a 9 iron with this set. (generally, you want the highest trajectory with backspin so the ball hits the green and stops rather than bounces over and off)
These irons won't give a lot of feedback (off center hits feel the same as on center hits) or feel (hard to describe, but overall experience on hitting the ball, these are faily hard feeling)
The drivers won't be as long off the tee as higher end ones, nor will the shafts have as consistant flex as higher end ones.
The wedges won't provide a ton of spin or feel for greenside and short game work.
The putter could be OK. Different people like different putters, so I can't say anything negative or positive about it. Just that it's a putter.
So, if you're a beginner, or are purchasing this for one, do it. It's a good set. It'll be forgiving and help bring them into the world of golf. They won't know the difference between this set and a set of quality Taylormade clubs anyway. It may not fit their swing, but again, it won't matter for a beginner. I will say, that if the person that that is purchased for fall outside of the 5'8" - 6' range, bring the clubs to your local golf shop and have them lengthened or shortened.
Plus, the bag is pretty nice. And you get a full set for under $200. That's a deal.
