SHucks, I was really hoping to make my 400th woot purchase tonight. You have nothing good for sale today though. and don't flipping suggest I buy a shirt or a woot.plus. My 400th woot is coming from a real woot purchase.

I had a set of Wilson clubs as my starter set... After about a year I upgraded to a used Taylormade Burner set I got from Golfsmith. I sold my Wilsons and I wish I had not. I don't play as often as I did with my Wilsons, but I definitely hit further, straighter, and more consistently than I do with my Burners. Thought I would grow into them, but I miss my Wilsons.

Hey woot, why didn't you put refurbished golf balls as the moofi? Coulda been a great combination. I'm just giving away these great ideas for free. Go ahead and feel free to use them.

I got a Wilson second-hand starter set this summer and love it. Not sure if I'm ready to get another one of this or another brand yet.

I actually have this set of clubs. They're great for beginner/intermediate players because they are quite forgiving. I would say this is a solid set for anyone looking to get started with golf next season or looking to replace a set of old crappy clubs you got from your uncle.

Looks like they delete your post if you beat wootalyzer =(
Would this be a good set for a novice? I don't know much about golf but I'm trying to avoid a present that will just be aggravating for a beginner.

Nonsense, I've beaten wootalyzer plenty of times. As long as you're not saying something like "first" or something else irrelevant it will stay.

I have a Wilson starter set. Same club types except it didn't come with the bag and putter. Good way to get into the game.

Choose your quantity first. So if you want both Men's & Women's, choose 2. You'll then have a box to select the sets you want.

This sale is for right-handed clubs only. Sorry.

I bought them last time out, too. It was 11 days ago on Black Friday. Maybe what Woot meant by "Cash Grab" was getting 20 extra bucks out of each of our pockets? Ha.

FYI - The box my set arrived in was sorta beat up and the top & bottom were both propped open. All the clubs were in it and they looked ok to me but this is a starter purchase...so, I'm not sure I would know a minor club injury if I saw one.

This may be a stupid question but I never ventured beyond a driving range... also, I'm 5'2 and my DH is 6'3 there are issues with his species I don't get!

Are these clubs okay for a tall guy who may or may not ever play? He's been asked out to play by guys are work, so it would be a career plus for him to play... So, while I'm not sure he'd ever really take time away from his mandatory 40+ hrs weekly gaming... I don't want him looking like an snowman (not intentionally) with tiny clubs.

They would be great if he never played, then they could go on Craigslist as "like new".

I'm guessing these are standard size, which might be a little short. But his beginner swing and huge slice will likely not cause many people to judge whether his clubs are a tad short. Plenty of people that tall have standard clubs. But if he ended up liking golf and getting good, he could upgrade then. I'd say, pull the trigger.

Most clubs are sold the correct length / lie for a range of 5' 8" - 6'. (This is basic for beginners.)

You would probably want to get the clubs lengthened for someone over 6'. You can take them to any golf store (Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, etc.) and they'll do it for around $3 a club. Sometimes they'll have to regrip them too (they'll let you know that before you commit) so that may be an extra $5 a club.

Now, this will probably hold true for a beginner. Anyone past that beginner stage, take them to a club fitter (again, Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, though I trust my local independent ones a heck of a lot more) to have the clubs adjusted (length / lie / shaft / grip / etc.) for your swing. You'll be glad you did - it makes a world of difference to play with a correctly fitted set of clubs.

Then again, this probably is a set for a beginner, and isn't, IMO, worth getting completely fitted to your swing. If you're going to spend the money on fitting, you'll want a better set of clubs.

I played for 8+ years before I went to a club fitter. Found out I should have been playing my irons .5 degrees upright (lie angle) Now all my shots that went right of the target go straight at it. That and I was fitted for new shafts for my driver and woods. Much more consistant off the tee now.

This will be a pretty good set for a novice.

These irons/wedges are pretty forgiving. (meaning that off center hits still go a decent distance and generally in the direction they're meant to.) They clubs won't hit the ball the furthest, nor will they produce a ton of backspin, but they'll work just fine and provide confidence at address.

The driver / woods are of decent quality and, although not very long off the tee, are equally forgiving.

The shafts in the clubs are OK. Fine for a beginner.

Grips are just fine as well.

The bag is of pretty good quality; easy to carry for 18 holes, or can easily be put on a cart (pull or riding) should you choose that method. Plenty of storage space, dual straps for carrying comfort, etc.

Now, if you've played a few rounds of golf and you shoot in the 90s, pass on this set.

Here's why:

The irons won't give a ton of distance and you won't be able to get hardly any backspin on the ball meaning that you'll be hitting a 5 iron (lower trajectory) from a distance where you'd be hitting a 7 or an 8 (higher trajectory) with a better set, and you'll have a hard time sticking the ball and holding a green on any shots longer than a 9 iron with this set. (generally, you want the highest trajectory with backspin so the ball hits the green and stops rather than bounces over and off)

These irons won't give a lot of feedback (off center hits feel the same as on center hits) or feel (hard to describe, but overall experience on hitting the ball, these are faily hard feeling)

The drivers won't be as long off the tee as higher end ones, nor will the shafts have as consistant flex as higher end ones.

The wedges won't provide a ton of spin or feel for greenside and short game work.

The putter could be OK. Different people like different putters, so I can't say anything negative or positive about it. Just that it's a putter.

So, if you're a beginner, or are purchasing this for one, do it. It's a good set. It'll be forgiving and help bring them into the world of golf. They won't know the difference between this set and a set of quality Taylormade clubs anyway. It may not fit their swing, but again, it won't matter for a beginner. I will say, that if the person that that is purchased for fall outside of the 5'8" - 6' range, bring the clubs to your local golf shop and have them lengthened or shortened.

Plus, the bag is pretty nice. And you get a full set for under $200. That's a deal.

20 to 1 says they're regular flex graphite shafts in the men's, and ladies flex graphite on the women's clubs.

Which is fine for beginners.

you cannot get this quantity and quality for the price - a bag like this usually 40-50 bucks - a putter 20-30 and a set of woods and irons, brand new is 180-200 - do the math - total cost of this set is 200 +/-, with freight and tax - this is a perfect starter set or someone who plays less than 10 x's a year, which are many golfers - those of you who have been waiting for a cool Christmas gift for your hubby, this is it
