We bought these for our lodge (63 2 & 3 Bdrm Units). While the combination of components in a small package is exactly what we needed, we have experienced a large amount of product failures. Out of 67 units ordered, we have experienced a 30 to 40% failure rate. Types of problems in order of occurrence:
1) Audio section - a) Subwoofer worked, but not satellite speakers b) "Overload" becomes too sensitive
2) Digital cable subsystem failures - a) Constantly losing the digital programming b) or just complete failure
3) Premature DVD Read problems - I say "premature" because the oldest unit is less than 2 years old.
4) Front panel lockout.
While we are a "lodge", this is a private residence club whose members tend to take good care of the appliances in each unit. So abuse is not a major cause of problems. Also, the manufacturing dates range over several months.
A failure of 10% or less would have been acceptable, but close to 40% is just ridiculous. These units were professionally installed and we have worked closely with the local cable company to try and find an outside cause, without success. The surround speaker system used with the DCP501 is a high end Yamaha setup, while brand new Panasonic flat-screen TV's were connected using S-Video.
We do have other Motorola Digital cable boxes in use here, and none of them have displayed any of these issues. So we were very surprised to experience all these problems. It's too bad, because now we will have to look for a multi-component type of setup that we really don't have the room for."

Worst audio product I've ever purchased. Can't even use the RADIO without terrible interference & static. Any audio input run through this piece of junk comes out the other side muffled & popping.
Really not any value here. Motorola even replaced my item with a brand new one once....same problems. So, basically, this thing was designed by the Motorola summer interns."

I have never written a review on anything before, but need to vent as well as warn as many people as I can about Motorola's products and their warranty policies and procedures. Don't buy a Motorola anything (especially this thing)please or you will run the risk of being so mad you can't see straight as I am. I got this piece of HEAVY junk and it will not work >>> none of the hook up displays function neither on the box itself or on the tv. I called their 24/7 (several times now) technical assistance line and they are nice and helpful as much as they can be reading out of a troubleshooting book, but that just doesn't slice the cake when it comes to a complicated piece of equipment as this thing is. With the limited resources (the tech book that they are reading out of) and the basic training they receive fails in successfully fixing the broken thing they will tell you that they will "escalate the repair request" to their engineering department. This entails waiting for 1 to 2 weeks (and they told me it really takes that long as they are busy)with the hopes that you will be home (unless you elect to stay at your place of residence 24/7 by the phone waiting for it to ring for that amount of time)for one of these "engineers" to call hopefully at a time when you are home and troubleshoot your crappy piece of equipment again. Now, if you are fortunate enough to be at home on the day and time that one of these engineers calls, and when they troubleshoot and find this thing defective ...inoperative or whatever they will give you an authorization number that will entitle you to send it in for a replacement (probably rebuilt) AT YOUR COST >>>> now remember that this darn hunk of junk weighs in at a unfatherly amount >>>> be prepared to spend 30.00 to 40.00 or more in shipping charges. I was informed that there is a 2 to 4 week or better turn around time on getting another one back, so Motorola gives you PLENTY OF TIME to prepare yourself to very possibly have the wonderful opportunity go through this lovely experience again. They certainly provide you much happiness for your hard earned money. I was also informed this was the same procedure for all of their products. For heavens sake, if you value your sanity, do not buy a Motorola ANYTHING!"
