Contest 79: Family Time

by 1person Friday, June 30 12:00 AM

Ooooo, it is a long weekend and many families will be spending time together. All those whiney children at the zoo, parks and meseums. It is too dang hot to be out and about and gas is way too expensive. So you can stay home and watch your electric bill climb faster than a sherpa with diarrhea, or you can dare to take your family somehere. This week's challenge:

Shows us our digital-photography bundle somehwere you and your family may go for the weekend.

You've got an extra couple of days this time around, in honor of the holiday that pays the mortgage for fireworks dealers everywhere, so take your time and don't expect to see the winners announced until Wednesday, July 5.

Post your entry here by by 11:59 PM CST on Tuesday, July 4, 2006. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of geniuses can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, pen and ink, collage, MSPaint, Spirograph, iron-on transfers, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. Try to keep your maximum width to 450px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use. And if you want us to be sure your entry was indeed your work, post links to your source images. The more sure we are that you did your own work, the more likely we are to consider it for a prize.

Past money winners: If you'd like to nominate any entries from this week's contest, email your selections (with links to the individual post) to me at jtoon@woot.com by noon CST on Wednesday.

As always, ignore the rules at will. Nobody likes a namby pamby mommas boy who always does what he's told. Of course we don't care if your entry is boring, cliche, poorly chopped, and replete with misspellings, just make sure you wonder aloud why your chop didn't merit an HM when we post the winners.

Another fine theme! Jason is really on the ball lately!

Oooh, I know! Here's how these two fine pieces of consumer electronics really met:

Show us what's really going on inside the Lexmark Z735 printer.

The winning entry will be the one to incorporate the Brave Woman, Adolph Hitler, 9/11, the Statue of Liberty, and an M.C. Escher drawing. All others will be judges as usual.

Hmmm. Guess this one won't win then, but the quality output of the Lexmark Z735 could only be accomplished one way:

Theme: Create an entry showing the influence Woot! has had on the development of early man and how today's digital-photography bundle demonstrates the birth of early intelligence.

Entry: After receiving his Lexmark printer/Vivitar camera bundle, man realizes what a substandard digital camera this Vivitar is, and he can not find replacement ink cartridges for his Lexmark printer! However, an idea dawns - the first use of a tool! He decides to beat the crummy photo bundle to pieces using the roll of photo paper he purchased in an earlier woot-off. A stroke of genius!

Because of the extra nice extended holiday weekend, we're giving you an extra pair of days to submit entries to the contest. And speaking of extra nice pairs -- we think that even if the Lexmark printer/Vivitar camera bundle isn't two of the nicest products we could have paired, you might just be able to use them to capture and print some better and nicer pairs. Your quest:

What really nice pairs would you take a picture of using the Vivitar 5110, and print on the Lexmark Photo Printer Z735?

If you show DaveBug and I together, we'll thank you for the kind thought, but disqualify you nonetheless. No fair attempting that kind of stunt in the hopes of a Monkey prize.

Since Jason is sleeping off another bad night at the Stumble Inn, its left up to me to come up with another contest- its not like I hired the guy for anything else but to take the pressure off of me to write these things, is it?

Anyway, because this terrific bundle of digital photography is going to result in lots of digital fingers elevated in our general direction, the contest may as well go with the flow.

Show an unconventional use of this Friday's woot bundle, when it has fallen into the hands of the subject a previous Woot contest winning image As an example, had mnementh ever won the contest with a Hassselhoff recursion, then Hasselhoff would be fair game. Alternatively, the Voltron contest winner would also be appropriate.
Feel free to use Imageshack.us, photobucket, or any other image hosting service, as woot is not going to host these copyright infringing offensive horrors. Do not post any pornographic images, as this is a PG-13 site (meaning the ideas and servers are as old as 1984, when PG-13 was invented). The more certain we are that you created the images you claim, the more likely we are to actually consider giving you money.
Irregardless (annoying, ain't it?), make sure your entries are posted by midnight on Independence day if you truly wish to be considered.

First Prize - $100
Josephus' Vacation Pictures of the Bread Pirate Roberts

With this list of sources, we are quite certain that Josephus actually made these images. Hardly seems worth it, huh? Still, this is by far the best use of a Wonderstew Winning entry by someone other than Wonderstew in the entire contest, as that is really what the contest was about, wasn't it?

The bonus showing of the vacation pictures themselves was just icing on the cake.

Contest 79: The long and the short of it... Well, it's the best of all possible worlds. No problem, it's a cinch... like the blind leading the blind. If you decide to enter this weekend's contest you'll be busier than a one-armed paper hanger. Play it by ear and stick to your guns. As they say, forewarned is forearmed. Remember, winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. That's right, Einstein, the cliché will rule this week; but not just any cliché... the granddaddy of all Photoshop Contest cliché subjects... M.C. Escher himself.

Photoshop the Lexmark Photo Printer w/ Vivitar 5MP Digital Camera Bundle into an M.C. Escher cliché print.

Do you like to hold reflecting globes? Non-Euclidean space not a problem for you? Tessellations get you excited? Images wrapping into themselves give you goosepimples? So let it be written; so let it be done.

To make a long story short, post your entry here by by 12:59 AM EST on Wednesday, July 5, 2006. Prizes are $100/$50/$20 for 1st/2nd/3rd. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand the rules and criteria for winning: in a nutshell, our panel of geniuses can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Youth is wasted on the young, so use Photoshop, pen and ink, collage, MSPaint, Spirograph, iron-on transfers, guitar tablatures, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. The more things change, the more they stay the same: keep your maximum width to 550px. If you're out on a limb and need a place to host your pictures, try imageshack.ws, photobucket.com, or wootimagehosting.net. Check it out. We have no connection to the first two, but they seem free and easy to use, especially the last one (phenominal donation required). A word to the wise: If you want us to be sure your entry was indeed your work, post links to your source images. If you want us to be sure your entry was indeed copied from someone else, post links to the original image. The more sure we are that you did (or did not do) your own work, the more likely we are to consider it for a prize (or permanently ban you from the site). And if you don't win this week, there are plenty more fish in the sea.

Past money winners: If you'd like to nominate any entries from this week's contest, email your selections (with links to the individual post) to me at jtoon@woot.com by 1:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday.
