Good afternoon to all of our visitors from the kingdom Animalia! We know it's not easy for you to navigate the site with those human-designed input devices, but help is on the way. Last Friday we asked our contestants to Design a keyboard and/or mouse for use by an animal, and show that animal using it. The resulting submissions illustrate that tentacles, beaks, tongues, and even scat can be just as useful as fingers and hands when it comes to personal computing. On with the birth of the new species-neutral Internet:

First prize - $100
intaglio - OStrich X

Some might say, "Hey, intaglio didn't add much to his source image." We say, "Your mama."

Second prize - $50
jirkstore - Web 8.0

It's got legs, and it knows how to use them.

Third prize - $20
SobaGurl - ErgoPillar Keyboard

Does the wireless signal trasmit through cocoon walls?

Honorable Mention

pute - Moskeyto
This keyboard's OK, but the user sucks! Haw haw!

Minimum Rage - The World At Your Hooftips
CTRL + WATER + BARLEY to restart.

mnementh - Scatalogitech Keyboard
Where do you want to go today?

McGuffy - AntEater Wireless 5000
Tongue-based interface also ideal for chameleons, frogs, and Gene Simmons.

Josephus - Keybird
We're strenuously suppressing our urge to call this one "corny."

rtype93 - Froggerer
Hoisted by our own keyboard! We're giving this one a prize to remind ourselves and the world: never again.

iceburgs - Waterproof Keyboard & Clam Suite
You might call them "sea stars," but they'll always be "starfish" to us.

Upwithpeople - 26 Squidoo
Always in the vanguard of technological advancement, squids unanimously prefer A-Z keyboards to the clumsy old QWERTY models.

Champions' Championship Champion
McGuffy - ChickenScratch 5000
Leaderboard maintainer McGuffy may want to add a new column to his spreadsheet now that he's become the first person to win the approbation of both our judges and the panel of former winners who choose the CCC. While the staffers here liked the anteater entry in the Honorable Mention section above, our council of champions preferred this one:

And this week's Monkey Prize goes to philippians48 's totally non-'chopped, willfully misinterpreted entry below. Yeah, it includes keys, a board, and a mouse, but not in the way we'd expect:

If I could talk to the animals, I'd tell them "This contest is over." As usual, the wooters who created the money-winning entries are invited to email their Paypal info to jtoon@woot.com. The Monkey winner should send his/her mailing address to the same, and Honorable Mentioneers may use coupon code HONMEN-FS for free shipping on a future order. Until next time, keep fighting for animal writes!

The ostrich and the inworm were two of my favorites. So no ill-will there.

I need to seriously step up my entry next time around. I've been flying below the rader. Not a even a blip.

i gotta agree with ya..

wasnt part of the contest to create a keyboard for an animal, not show a keyboard in use by an animal?

is it sad that it took me over two hours to photoshop the ostrich's keyboard?

either way, thanks!

There were a lot of great entries that didn't win, keep up the good work, you know who you are

That works out to, like, $50/hr for your win, minus PayPal's ever-increasing fees.

Congrats all. I am honored to receive the CCC. All I need now is a monkey.

And I was thinking how good of a job they did this time...

Still single, can't imagine why.

i somehow expected the ostrich to get first.. i think overall it was just a really funny entry... 2hours of chopping is pretty silly though
i would think.. make a hole.. copy.. paste...

anyway.. i forgot to congratulate you all on winning
so.. CONGRATULATIONS !!!

i'm just disappointed that i didn't get another

WOOT GOLD STAR! in my SIG.

I'll bet the shadow took the most time.

I definitely had Quailmann's cowboard showing, even if just an HM, on my "imaginary-only-in-my-head" results page. Creative.

I thought sure xb1...'s dog-leg-hump keyboard would snag the monkey. Also surprised not to see Scatterplot's pigeondrop in the HM's.

Attention to detail. The perspective and everything had to be just right. The reflection would take some time too. Imho, Intaglio definitely deserved the win.

I'll get the leaderboard updated this evening.

I just have to ask how does a "Moskeyto" get blood out of a keyboard?

ok.. i never intended this to be a debate on who deserved first place... i think it was a great entry.. but i don't think anyone looked at the source

i don't see what shading and reflection needed to be done.
just holes in the shape of a keyboard

am i missing something?

1st, 2nd, 3rd well deserved. intaglio's - OStrich X, if for no other reason, is a pleasure to look at.

I don't mean to be a sore loser but if you look at intaglio's source image, you can see the ostrich's shadow already on there. Is that the shadow you are referring to? Anyhow, it's still a pretty funny, clever entry. I can see how the keyboard holes might take a while to perfect.

What's sad is spending longer than 2 hours on entries that didn't even place. *ahem*

I am also surprised that Quailmann's Cowboard didn't make the list of winners.

i see how you can think it was that simple, i thought it would be too, but try it out. it's harder than it looks. each row's hole is slightly smaller than the one behind it, going to the edge. i adjusted the highlight and shadows around the edge of each hole... stuff like that. if you notice the gradation of the surface, you'll see that the light blue edge (highlight) around the hole the head is in would actually be darker than the white surface near the middle of the image... tedious stuff like that.

it really was just copying and pasting... but then adjusting each one as i went along

i agree that it's an awesome entry
and deserved to win... i guess it's so well done you miss out on how good the chop is.. you just take it for granted
anyhow... i wouldn't think the highlighting would be an issue.. size of the holes would have been the only issue.... if your holes were just black, with a black shadow around them.. that way the highlight would just come through on its own.

anyway.. here's looking forward to wasting more time at work when next friday rolls around.

congrats y'all. and thanks for the HM.

Intaglio's image has it. not a lot of chopping, sure, but, reminds me of McGuffy's batman, you know? couldn't not win. Oh, and Jason was at least referring to me ("Some might say, "Hey, intaglio didn't add much to his source image." We say, "Your mama." ")

my email: "Although Intaglio's ostrich will probably win, ;^) it isn't really much value added compared to the original ad"

I have changed my mind about that, I had not considered the McGuffy Batman at the time. So STOP talkin' about my mama!

MCGuffy, I still don't pay any paypal fees. A long time ago, the gave people the "option" to upgrade to Premier level. If you opted out, you stayed in the free level.

https://www.paypal.com/fees

Unless you need Premier level call them and have the switch you back to Personal level

His shadows on the mouse an keyboard were ok (a bit dark) but the monitor shadow didn't match them.

would you belive that back in 1999 someone already had the Screen Name "Quailman"

so i had to come up with something that wasn't used... and i liked the number seven... soooooo (2) N's!

Now that we've finished with intaglio, can someone please tell me what's good about the second place winner? Is it the odd blue and red rings around the different parts that don't seem to follow with the placement of the parts? Is it possible that the judges don't care that the spider is apparently UPSIDE DOWN with its back to the keyboard, so its legs are obviously flailing around, unable to connect with the keys? Could that be a slight problem with this entry? Perhaps?

Worst piece of judging I’ve ever seen. The judges picked that as the winner!? Geez just terrible heck beyond terrible. As for the “people’s choice award” … are you kidding me. Do these people even know anything about talent? Well they haven’t proved it to me yet.

Whoops posted that message on the wrong board ... thought it was the "America's Got Talent" message board. =)

Seriously congrats to all the winners. Some very good concepts/entries for this contest.

I thought the ostrich concept was great, and I highly doubt the woot staff loses any sleep at night knowing they need to "prove" something to you.

The hardest part is coming up with something clever, which intaglio did. It doesn't matter how he got there, the end result speaks for itself.

Okay after looking at the 3 money winners again, it looks like intaglio actually did a lot more chopping on his entry than Sobagurl did on the inchworm/folding keyboard. Look at these sources I found on a quick google search for Inchworm and palm keyboard.

It kills me how much time I spend on my entries.

Excellent choices for winners. The Ostrich thingy is just ... well ... pretty. Several winners in recent memory had great color and an artsy feel to them, so no quibbling with 1st.

2nd place however, ICK, spiders! I have a natural aversion to spiders which is why I did not pick this excellent chop. As far as showing an keyboard/mouse adapted to an animal, this is pretty much right on the mark. Good work.

3rd place is an obviously terrific interpretation. The worm is not actually USING the teeny tiny keyboard ... but it's so clear to me that he's about to use it ... so no harm done. Again, very impressive entry, the kind that makes one say "wow, why the heck didn't Mcguffy think of that?"

The Monkey Prize is WELL deserved. I see it as a "this is a stupid contest theme so here's a rebel attacking you with a pathetic pun-image" type thing. Now, I disagree with the contest theme being stupid. Desperate maybe, stupid, no.

The lesson I learned from this contest is: You MUST start out with a great source image, large, crisp, cute and maleable. 2nd lesson, always praise Quailmann7's stuff. 3rd lesson, you can use Friday's work schedule as a pseudo-chopping day if you have enough job security (like your uncle runs the place).

Finally, all of my entries this week were just bad. My apologies.

Go gators! Go Hokies!

Doesn't look upside down to me. Jirkstore said when he posted it the lighting wasn't correct, but still it's a good entry. The keypad looks realistic to me.
