Lamentations of the Wooters: I'm Heading to Charlotte!

Have you completely run out of places to turn for advice? Write into lamentations@woot.com for Kristy’s completely useful guidance (well, at least for one more week)! Read on for this week’s emails:

Here's my lamentation:

My home phone number is being bombarded with insurance company calls!

This started 2 weeks ago. When I answered the first call the woman asked for my husband, he was at work. She said she was calling about his requests for insurance quotes on a car he does not even own. She said he sent the request to her company through his Hotmail email account. He does not HAVE a Hotmail account. We have been getting calls from 6 different companies, all listed as repeat offenders on the “who just called me” or other frequent call lists online.

If I do answer these calls and start to say “remove this number from your call list” they hang up on be before I can finish the sentence! I have called some of them back and get a recording with options. I select the option to be removed from the call list and it disconnects the call.

I have been keeping a list of calls and dates and times. HOW CAN I STOP THIS?!?!?!

Signed,
MAKE THE RINGING STOP!

Hello friend! This sounds so terrible! I will admit I’ve never dealt with this problem because I don't answer my phone.

I feel like the easiest answer would be to set your phone on fire. Start anew with a phoneless life! But, my bet is that you’ll cave and get another phone near immediately, so what do you do with the second phone? Check out the Do Not Call Registry (or call 1-888-382-1222), however I hear conflicting reports. Some think this ends up making your phone number easier to find, though I wonder if that’s paranoia. The Registry promises that calls should stop within 31 days and asks that you report any calls that continue, but since phone number spoofing is so easy, it might not end up being useful.

Another option might depend on who you have your phone service through. I looked up Comcast’s rules and it looks like you can block up to 12 phone numbers which sounds like it might not be enough, but they do also offer a way to block any callers who’ve intentionally hidden their phone number on Caller ID. To check out the rules for your provider, just Google something like "[provider name] unwanted phone calls” and good luck!

Here's my lamentation:

This is getting serious. There is a Wooter here that is a very, very nice person. This unnamed person always will share advice, share humor, share funny GIFs, share scary clowns, share most everything.

But... she refuses to EVER share ANY of her garlic balls! I realize they are garlicy, salty, greasy little dough balls of goodness, but at least she should share just one! What can be done to convince her to hand over a few of those damn garlic balls???

Signed,
Noballs

Hello friend! That’s so terrible! Surely if I were this person I would offer to order more and share while still getting my fill of delicious garlic balls. It sounds like that’s not an option with this person.

It seems like the best idea is to get her phone number and try to sign it up on as many call lists as possible. Really just find the worst, most tenacious ones and get her number on them ASAP. It’s possible you could have already done this since it’s an obvious answer, so you might think about setting fire to the garlic balls the next time she orders some. Sometimes it really does take fire for someone to learn their lesson. Oh, but I’m sounding like a broken record now!

Here's my lamentation:
