Music Monday: Advice Songs

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! Need some advice? Maybe you can get it from a song! Scott's found five advice songs that might lead you to being a better you. No promises, though. You have to WANT to change.

Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

Before he was a director, he was a great songwriter! Well, okay, maybe "great" is being kind. But this song did chart, and a lot of people still remember it from their young, glorious days. And hey, it's not wrong. You should wear sunscreen when you can.

More advice coming up. For Heaven's sake, take it!

Material - Words Of Advice

The great William Burroughs was giving advice to young people since before he was the great William Burroughs. His work with Material reminds you that he was, in fact, a bit of a mentor figure to the Beats since day one.

Kenny Rogers - The Gambler

It's not as direct as the two songs above, but the premise of this song is an old gambler sharing advice with a young man, and the chorus (which we all know, right?) is something many poker players have taken to heart over the years. Especially the "walking away" part. You can save yourself a lot of money knowing when to do that.

Tears For Fears - Advice For The Young At Heart

Hey, it says advice right in the title! Don't blame us if you have trouble deciphering the lyrics!

The Animals - When I Was Young

The truth of it is a great many songs offer life advice, even if they don't admit it openly. This Animals song is a cautionary tale about how NOT to live... or possibly advice that you can live poorly and still turn out famous. Either/or, right? Ah, well. My advice to you now is to post your favorite advice songs in the thread.

Let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. See you next week.
