Toy Fair 2010: Day Three: Walk The Monkey (Part One)

by Scott Lydon

Meet Magnus Monkey. He's our newest employee.

01 alex

While Mortimer and Monte stay around the office, Magnus prefers to get out there and explore. He's quiet, but charming, and as you can see, that makes him a hit with all the girls in the office. But Magnus has no time for love. After the jump, he's got a Toy Fair to explore!

Magnus had been told that ToyFair 2010 was a great place for a stuffed monkey to make friends. And sure enough, it only took him seconds to find a distant relative!

02 charmco

This particular monkey was at the Charm Co. booth. We, of course, had a little look around while Magnus and his cousin were catching up...

03 charmco poodle

…and noticed this ultra-chic pink poodle rocking horse. How 21st Century! But there's no dawdling at Toy Fair. And anyway, Magnus had already decided on our next stop.

04 china towins

Ever wanted a perfect wooden ferris wheel that comes up to about mid-thigh on a full grown male? You're in luck! China Towins Gifts And Toys have just the ferris wheel for you! Stop tripping over those piles of cash and start tripping over wooden ferris wheels instead!

Magnus was a little dizzy after his ride, but he still wanted a snack. But he also wanted that snack to be made out of modeling clay. And it had to colorful, but also taste like a sugar cookie. Would you believe it? There was actually something like that at Toy Fair!

05 plasmart yummy dough

The nice lady at the PlaSmart booth was kind enough to make Magnus a hot dog out of their delicious Yummy Dough, a modeling clay that is also totally edible and also doesn't really taste too bad. We had a bite ourselves, and it really does taste like a store-bought sugar cookie (maybe it could use a little more sugar, but hey, it's clay!) Also here's a fun fact: did you know that PlaSmart doesn't actually sell anything made out of plasma? Yeah, it surprised us too. But we did get to make and eat a small version of Michaelangelo's David, so we can't complain about mistakes in the company's name.

After his meal, Magnus wanted to relax. We heard there was a TV at the Folkmanis booth, so we took a little walk there.

06 folkmans

Wouldn't you know it? Folkmans is the company that makes those cool puppets that appear regularly on The Late Late Show! Funny coincidence, some of our monkeys have also been on The Late Late Show. But when we told that to the Folkmans people, they just kind of nodded and moved on to other visitors. So there you go, proof that fame is a harsh mistress.

Hey, here's something. Have you ever wondered how much everything costs at Toy Fair? Well, we sure didn't, until Magnus suddenly noticed his wallet was empty. Like everyone else who wants fast money, Magnus had to get a job.

07 norscot

Thankfully, a strong young monkey can always find work in construction. The people at the Norscot booth were very happy to let Magnus get some experience on the big machines. And they were also very happy to show off the only licensed scale UPS truck!

08 cool little ups truck

It's a perfect replica of the real thing. The rear door even goes up and down. We don't know why it's cool, but accept it. It just is.

Magnus soon found out that driving the specialty machines pays really well. He ended up with so much money, he was able to buy a house!

09 brincadada

Brinca Dada's fantastic Emerson House folds apart or together (you can see the other half in our picture's background) to make something a lot more attractive and desirable than some pre-fab "dream home". Magnus sat on his balcony, sipped his chai latte, and fell asleep. But then, he had a terrible dream. He was tiny. and in a black cape, and on some strange world, being hated by someone called "The Emperor".

10 Blessed is the monkey too small for doubt

Will Magnus survive his strange dream? Can he make it through our Toy Fair 2010 coverage in one piece? Stay tuned, monkey lovers. There's more to come!
