Watch This First: Puppy Chuck Wagon commercial, 1976

by Jason Toon

Yes, we've been featuring pet videos during our Heavy Petting pet week at Sellout.Woot. But it wouldn't be Watch This First without the occasional vintage commercial. So we'll end the week with a visit from the elusive stop-motion Chuck Wagon. Where did it come from? How did it get so tiny? What did it do when it wasn't leading dogs to dinner? Oh, how I longed to grab the Chuck Wagon as it raced under the dining-room table, talk to the cowboys inside, pet those tiny horses, or at least just get a good look at it before it could run back into the bag. Come back, Chuck Wagon! Come back!

Watch This First: Skippy Snack Bars commercial, c. 2000

by Jason Toon

I have a confession to make. For roughly the past thirteen years, through all the major moments of my life - my wedding, the birth of my two daughters, that time I saw Hulk Hogan in Las Vegas - my brain has been playing a continuous loop of Rasta elephants toasting and crooning about a mass-market peanut-butter dessert ingot. Now it's your turn.

Watch This First: Trapper Keeper commercial, 1981

by Jason Toon

There's a lot to love in Mental Floss's excellent history of the Trapper Keeper, but nothing more than the 1981 mini-rom-com that introduced it to prime-time audiences. This Jeffrey kid knows how to make his voice crack to maximum comic effect. He should've been a star.

Watch This First: Heineken In Space, 1955

by Jason Toon

Dutch stop-motion animation pioneer Joop Geesink directed this three-minute space epic, starring a rocketful of ruimtevaarders who start pounding Heinekens as soon as they reach orbit. When Professor Space's crew lands on the Moon to exchange gifts with the fancifully dressed locals, it turns out both parties brought the same gift. No points for guessing what it is. You can see more of Geesink's animation at the Joop Geesink YouTube channel. And if you like old animated beer ads, check out my blog post Cartoon Drunk: 10 Animated Beer Commercials.

Watch This First: Jason Alexander for Delta Gold Potato Chips, 1987

by Jason Toon

Unlike his all-singing, all-dancing burgerstravaganza seen here on Tuesday, this static-camera clip finds Jason Alexander staying in one place to extol the virtues of a potato-chip brand I've never heard of. The overall effect is "Albert Brooks's flamboyant junk-food-addicted cousin."

Watch This First: Jason Alexander for McDLT, 1985

by Jason Toon

Yesterday I showed you the unfunny skeleton in Jerry Seinfeld's closet. But that was only, at worst, the second-most embarrassing moment for a future Seinfeld star. Presenting the classic 1985 commercial featuring Jason Alexander hoofing and crooning in honor of the McDLT, complete with cuffed sleeves on his white sport coat and either a bad toupee or a haircut that looks like one. Alexander makes the most of this no-win situation, throwing himself into the performance with the same whole-hearted enthusiasm that George Costanza put into his elaborate lies.

Watch This First: Whitehorse City Council Commercial

by Jason Toon

Power struggles. Ideologies clashing. Cutthroat rhetorical combat with the fate of thousands hanging in the balance. If you think a town of 23,000 in the Yukon can't be the stage for epic political drama, experience this commercial for the televised proceedings of the Whitehorse City Council. You'll never look at zoning variances quite the same way again.

Badvertising: Insufferable Jerks Do Not Sell Satellite Dishes

by Randall Cleveland

Rare is the commercial that really sticks with you. At best, it's likely to inflict some subtle subconscious urge to buy a Bud Light the next time you're at a football game or something. More often, though, and much more tragic, are the ads that stand out for being just so awful they make you go out of your way to avoid whatever it is they've advertised. Badvertising is for those kinds.
