Woot Contest 232: We Don't Heal, We Refurb

by Jason Toon

Everybody's shouting about how the insurance industry can't run healthcare, or the government can't run healthcare, or - most bizarrely of all - the government should keep its hands off Medicare. But nobody's asking the one tough question that needs to be asked: what if Woot ran the healthcare system?

Show us what would happen in a healthcare system run by Woot.

Post your entry here by 11:59 AM (central) on Monday, August 17, 2009. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of volunteer judges can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Use Photoshop, linoleum blocks, pastels, MSPaint, cave painting, tattoos, tribal scarification, whatever, but it’ll only be judged if it’s visible in our forums as a jpg, gif, or png. As we are fond of saying, try to keep your maximum width to 550px. If you need a place to host your pictures, try www.imageshack.ws or www.photobucket.com. We have no connection to either, but they seem free and easy to use. And if you want us to be sure your entry was indeed your work, post links to your source images. The more sure we are that you did your own work, the more likely we are to consider it for a prize.

Woot Contest 231: Woot's On Your Mind?

by Jason Toon

After the woots we sell leave our warehouse to make their way in the wide world, they sometimes get lonely for all the other products they were crammed alongside of for so long. So they do what everybody else who wants to reminisce about the glory days does: they KIT on the Facebook. But since we were banned from FB in the aftermath of the Click-Here-To-Confirm-Your-Paypal-Password Incident of 2009 (thanks, suckers!), we can't see the pages of any of our former-inventory pals. Can you spy on them for us?

Show us a former Woot product's Facebook page (or a detail from their home page, or some other page from their account).

Woot Contest 230: You Got Some Cosplaynin' To Do

by Jason Toon

As usual, last week's Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego brought out the most dedicated and shameless dress-up types, decked out like their favorite imaginary costumed bad-asses from comics, movies, TV shows, and video games. From Slave Leia to Luke Cage, they ran the gamut of geekish obsession, transforming ordinary conventioneers into objects of awe, derision, or lust. We just wish we could've helped. Your challenge this week:

Show us how you could use past or current Woots as part of your superhero, sci-fi, or video-game costume.

Emphasize the inventive DIY aspect of cosplay - we're not looking for Hollywood-quality likenesses. It should be obvious that the costumes are fan-made.

Winners' Gallery: the Best of Contest 227

by Josephus & shan24

On a day that seems like 100 hours ago, but was much, much longer ago than that, in the midst of the celebrity death-watch to beat all celebrity death watches, we aked you to Show us what a recently deceased celebrity (or group of celebrities) is doing in the afterlife. Fortunately, they quit dropping like flies- you know how an aged fly can be just flying along, trying to get into your rice pudding, and then he suddenly just falls over dead? Only he isn't really dead, 'cause his wings just won't carry him any more, so he sort of rotates around on his back, as he slowly di- OK, never mind. Regardless, the seers among you took the time to show us what's happining on the other side- and heeeeeere's the list!

First Place - $100
mwiseman - Switcheroo

Michael's just sittin' at the pearly gates, waiting on Diana Ross.

Woot Contest 229: The Woot-Summer Classic

by Jason Toon

Maybe it's just because we're here in St. Louis, where the 2009 MLB All-Star Game will be played tomorrow night, but we've just about had our fill of all things All-Star this week. Fortunately, it seems the appropriately-titled Smashmouth hit is officially played out, as we haven't been subjected to it once. But otherwise, only one thing could make us even more sick of All-Star hype right now: an All-Star-themed Photoshop contest. Why do we do this to ourselves? Your challenge this week:

Show us an action shot of the Woot All-Star Game, featuring great woots of the past and present competing against each other.

It doesn't have to be baseball - any sport or non-sport competitive activity is OK, too. The teams are up to you: Woot vs. Shirt.Woot? Dot-Woots vs. Mothership Woot? Electronics vs. Housewares? And it's also OK if you want to show us a scene from the surrounding festivities: autograph sessions, the old-timer's softball game, the stars arriving at the airport, etc.

Post your entry here by 11:59 AM (central) on Monday, July 20, 2009. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. The rules and criteria for winning: our panel of volunteer judges can and will make stuff up as it goes along. Winners' Gallery; the Best of Contest 226

My doctor tells me that a glass of wine each day is good for my heart. Provided it isn't Pruno, of course. Of course I'm a confirmed woot wine drinker, from long ago, when we could still get that Monkey Prize wine. ah, the overtones of banana and fleas that defined that wine just don't come across these days. Still, there's business to take care of. We asked you to Show us the label for a new Woot Cellars wine designed to appeal to a not-previously-Woot-friendly demographic. Yet again, despite our using Oompa Loompas to pick and stomp the grapes, you provided us with a wonderful variety of wines:

First Place - $100

Aarrgh you kiddin' me?

Woot Contest 228: Here's Looking At You, Superkid

by Jason Toon

By now, Hollywood has discovered that superhero movies equal reliable summertime bank. You get the popcorn blockbuster crowd. You get the hardcore multiple viewers ( who cares if most of them are only there to pinpoint the ways the movie deviates from accepted comics continuity?). You get the opportunity for endless sequels and DVD special editions. The only way it could be any better is if the movies themselves were cheaper to make. But hey, the studios have decades of old films just sitting there, or at best making a few dollars a year in cable royalties. Just slap a few CGI costumes on those characters and you've got yourself a blockbuster. Your challenge this week:

Show us a movie poster for a classic (non-superhero) film transformed into a superhero movie.

Post your entry here by 11:59 AM (central) on Monday, July 13, 2009. Prizes are $20/$50/$100 for 3rd/2nd/1st. Woot Contest 227: They Just Faded Away

by Jason Toon

Celebrity deaths, they say, come in threes...except when they come faster than that. We've seen a bunch of famous folk move on to the big encore in the sky lately, and we're wondering what their next acts are. That's where you come in:

Show us what a recently deceased celebrity (or group of celebrities) is doing in the afterlife.

Obviously, please keep it reasonably tasteful. Yes, that means no Michael Jackson pedophilia jokes.

Woot Contest 226: Woot Sellers

by Jason Toon

Today marks the release of yet another Woot Cellars wine, Triacipedis the White. But while we adore the typically geeky wizard-themed packaging, we're feeling like it's time to expand our customer base. Now that we're approaching saturation of the "Internet boozehound with pretensions to class" demographic, we ask ourselves, where can we turn next? Then we realize we don't know anybody but Internet boozehounds with pretensions to class. So we're asking you:

Show us the label for a new Woot Cellars wine designed to appeal to a not-previously-Woot-friendly demographic.

Seventh-Day Adventists. Inner-city seniors. The burgeoning Icelandic-American community. There's market share just waiting for us out there if we can find it. Or rather, if you can find it. We'll wait here.
