Watch This First: Puppy Chuck Wagon commercial, 1976

by Jason Toon

Yes, we've been featuring pet videos during our Heavy Petting pet week at Sellout.Woot. But it wouldn't be Watch This First without the occasional vintage commercial. So we'll end the week with a visit from the elusive stop-motion Chuck Wagon. Where did it come from? How did it get so tiny? What did it do when it wasn't leading dogs to dinner? Oh, how I longed to grab the Chuck Wagon as it raced under the dining-room table, talk to the cowboys inside, pet those tiny horses, or at least just get a good look at it before it could run back into the bag. Come back, Chuck Wagon! Come back!

Watch Watch This First first, weekday mornings at 7 Central. Because the best way to start the day is to start it a few minutes later.

"Pets" That Look Like Celebrities

by Amy Nance

In case you haven't noticed, it's Pet Week over on Sellout.Woot. We've got some great buys on fancy animal goods in our pet event that I refuse to refer to by name.

And in the spirit of spoiled rotten animals who always get what they want, I give you Pets That Look Like Celebrities. A few caveats, though. It's really more animals that look like celebs. Because if you had some of these animals as pets, you'd probably be arrested. Also, I take issue with referring to some of these people as celebrities. Most notably, Hitler. They could have just as easily gone with Charlie Chaplin, and I would have been cool with that.

And just for giggles, here's another one:

Think you've got a pet who looks like a celebrity? We want to see it! Share your pics or videos in the thread below.

Watch This First: Brazil's Tiger Family

by Jason Toon

A good idea: our Heavy Petting pet week deals on Sellout.Woot. A bad idea: taking several tigers into your home as pets. An even worse idea: letting your children and grandchildren play with the tigers. I can't imagine this ending well for the Borges family of Maringá, Brazil.

Watch This First: Cats Stealing Dog Beds

by Jason Toon

How you feel about today's video for our Heavy Petting pet week at Sellout.Woot will depend on how you see cats and dogs. Are cats assertive individualists or heartless monsters? Are dogs gentle and tolerant, or dumb and wimpy? Whatever your feelings about dogs and cats, this collection of cats taking over dog beds will provoke them.

Lock Up Your Dachshunds: Bret Michaels Is Coming After Your Pets

by Jason Toon

You gotta hand it to Bret Michaels. He's turned his few years in front of a dopey pop-metal drag show into a multimedia career that just won't go away. While his fellow AquaNet casualties are reduced to courting publicity with pathetic tales of "almost" getting blown up, Bret continues to ooze his way into all kinds of cultural crannies. His latest unwelcome encore: the Bret Michaels Pets Rock Collection.

Every bone has its lawn… Just like every chew toy will get gnawed…
Just like every puppy needs newspapers to pee on…

Yes, it's a line of dog gear soaked in the timeless(ly cheesy) Bret Michaels aesthetic, the same way his ilk used to soak the bathroom floor at the Cathouse. If you thought the whole corset/bandanna/leather look was embarrassing on humans, check out how it looks on poor, unsuspecting dogs. I'm having trouble imagining the consumer who is swayed by this marketing campaign, but that might be my subconscious trying to protect me from that horrifying vision.

But it does raise the question: what other hair-metal endorsements could win over this demographic? Night Ranger infrared security cameras? Kip Winger fruit pies? Vince Neil breathalyzers? And where was Faster Pussycat on this whole Petsmart deal, anyway? Post your ideas in the discussion thread…
