Orcrist42 wrote:this one, I think of like a fantasy world where the boat takes the place of plane travel. i.e. there is a river/ocean in the sky (magically, or through a trick of technology) and the boat is traveling on it.

... but surreal landscape is kind of a neat sub-genre of fantasy art. I don't understand a lot of it, just kind of go, wow that's neat. Salvador Dali is one of the better know surreal artists, I am sure there are lots of others.

Art should evoke a response in the viewer which is very personal. The artist may intend one thing, but the viewer may see another. That's not a bad thing, since viewing art is not a contest to see if you can guess the artist's intent.

Actually, I chose a sight-seeing boat to portray a surreal sight-seeing voyage. The city is Singapore.

peglegwookie wrote:I think you should work on the losttrains one and do a deathstar for the moon perhaps, its very nice on its own. I suggest making multiple versions that make fun of people on woot or woot itself or any number of other things. The moons could be a faded face of someone who posts on woot alot. I like those myself, but you should try doing different versions and we can vote for one of them.

websorcerer wrote:WOW!!! Enter those images in the contest. They are fantastic.

thanks!! I am glad people are checking am out although I don't think ill be submitting any of these for this dodgeball contest (doesn't really fit the theme) or any other contest, they are meant to be backgrounds.. Although, the deathstar wasn't a bad idea...hmmmm

You are that old? Really? Did you work in electronics your whole life or something?

The El. I remember being in the baby carriage under the El and the train going over. I was afraid of the noise. I bet I could scream louder than the train! Finally, an aunt decided maybe if I knew what the noise was I would be better with it and they took me up to the platform and showed me the train! Train at your level is no where near as bad as a train going over your head.
Oh, since people walked to shop back then I might have been 3 and still in a carriage, because it was a long walk and there were packages to carry back.
What train was it? Mine was the A train in Queens.

You were cute! Why did they dress us like that? Even 20 years later.

WE LURV YOU TOO! Dork!!!

I'm still cute, in a surreal sort of way.

I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry (BS in Chemistry, Brookyn Polytech, 1961; Ph.D. Kansas State University, 1966)

We lived three blocks from where the picture was taken. Our apartment was on the 3-rd floor facing the El, so it was a familiar sound which we really paid no attention to.

I don't rememer what the train was.

Near Flatbush Ave; 333 Jay Street. You could see the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges from some of the classrooms.

Unk, I think the dinosaur skeleton eating from the barren tree in a field of dead grass is really fantastic. A real mind grabber. Just in writing this, I've dwelled over a few potential ideas as to "what the picture means", which to me is what art is supposed to do, make you think. Awesome!

If planets were open spaces in a solid universe ... and conveniently had there own suns, of course. They wouldn't be very interesting to look at if there were no light.

Reminiscent of "Starchaser: The Legend of Orin" perhaps.

Just a note to thank all you folks who have already posted/will soon post/just might post a chop. The images we have so far--from both frequent choppers and some newer folks-- are great, plus I've enjoyed the digressions into the meaning of art, elevated subway systems in NYC neighborhoods, mid 20th century children's fashions, etc. TheUnknownArtist's portfolio is terrific (apocofinal reminded me of Bladerunner) and life in the Dodgeball 37 thread is good. And for people considering submitting one or more posts, you've got plenty-o-time: over 36 hours of chopping time left!

I cannot say that I have done work on these images, but I think they sorta fit the theme and are fun.

I think I will make my own variation to this idea.

Thanks. It was harder to do than I expected. The shadows under the strawberries gave me a fit. I ended up doing them with the spray gun tool.

Hmm, it just occurred to me that I have a pretty good entry from something I did for a regular woot contest. I pretty much need to just remove a text layer. Any objections?
