@spoonyspork said "but I'm guessing with a bit more leg work the LED could be replaced with a better one fairly easily?"

I think that's a bad guess - having EE'd some high output LED solutions I can assure you the problem is in packaging meaning the heat away from the center of any LED. Also there's likely a current control (limit) driver involved. It isn't like a bulb you just replace with a higher wattage one assuming it will draw whatever it needs or that even if possible to drive it harder that you can disregard resulting heat dissipation. Semiconductors like this need thermal management or they'll fail (and LEDs color shift even when mildly overheated). It's ok to experiment when there's something to be gained or satisfied by it but set your expectations accordingly - this isn't improvable and the LED power is only part of it's limit. FWIW I returned one 6 weeks ago - love the 3M Picoprojector based on LCOS that I replaced it with...though that was closer to $120 and even that has modest brightness.

I am so pissed about all of these jolly restrictions on purchasing. I wanted to buy one for me and one for my Dad and have them shipped different places, but it seems as though it is impossible to do that, and there is no way to change or fix anything without waiting for someone to read your email.

Just in case this post isn't a troll...

No. Absolutely no. And as a school district tech support person I cringe at the thought. Lots of reasons.

  1. It's not technology approved for use in your classroom by your district.
  2. It's resolution is LOWER than even those old Averkey's you can check out from your library and hookup to an old TV -- and when's the last time you saw anyone use one of those?
  3. It's so dim that you'll need to run it in your supply closet -- not in the classroom where you have fluorescent lights and windows that can't be covered with blackout curtains.
  4. Your building/district tech support people may be too polite to say it to your face, but they will laugh and make snide comments behind your back.
  5. Did you notice that it has 320x240 resolution and no way to hook up a computer?
  6. See number 1.

All that said, my youngest has a short "loft" bed and I'm probably in for one for use at night in a dark room for a 20"-30" or so image from an old DVD player.

Anybody know where to get replacement lenses made of glass?

And for the record, I don't think it looks like a Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth-Class at all. Unless it comes packed with a cricket.

I have no idea what your time is worth but looking for a replacement lens made of glass, aside from the cost, is going to be like putting some perfume on something that you expelled after your digestive system was done with it. If it improves the image that drastically, and you can do all this before midnight, then you should have a thousand of your friends buy three of these contraptions, buy three thousand of said lenses, mark it up and make a nice clean bundle in time to shop for X mas. Be sure to keep one or two for yourself. Your notoriety won't be in the profit you make but rather the whole concept of reselling after buying from Woot, not unlike the folks who buy candy etc. from Costco, mark it up a bit, and still make a profit.

A good glass lens is only going to make all the discoloration, among other things, look that much worse, and when you are done experimenting you will realize whey they put such a cheap lens on this thing anyway...

But then again, it is the innovative spirit like yours that has made America what it is, (cue the patriotic music and follow spots I need you to get the marching band as they enter from the back of the patent office.)

Good luck, Merry X Mas, and happy wooting.

Long live Woot, no matter who owns them or what they are selling today.

How do adult films project on this thing, at first i was going to buy one for my nephew, but i am sucker for nostalgia and will procure one for myself. I suspect the watching of sexy movies on this thing would be similar to the scrambled channels on your parents cable box circa 1998.

I got one of these the last time they were on woot and you know what? for the price it is okay.. just don't expect it to do anything amazing. I use it to play geometry wars while in bed. I have the projector pointed at the ceiling and as long as the lights are out and the TV isn't too bright then it is usable. Dont plan on using it to play any RPGs or anything where you have a lot of menus that you need to read through because the rez (320x240) isn't enough.. heck.. it is almost hard/too hard to read the menus in the xbox dashboard. Games with big graphics are fine. Focus isn't too great.. some parts are in focus while others are slightly out. I can get the image sharp enough that I can see the rows of pixels... but again- the res is too low.

Movies look fine.. a little blurry but fine

There is an onboard speaker that works + a headphone jack- which is what I use so I dont bug my wife while she is watching tv.

This would probably be a good TOY for kids..

I bought it mostly for experimenting.. going to take it apart later and 30$ is not that bad when I cant put it back together.

What would make this awesome? A version 2.0 with 640*480 rez and 10-20 lumens (to keep the price down) and around 50$.. that would make it worth it. There are a lot of 200$ LED projectors that are great

Not at all. It only works in a blacked out room for displaying at ~20" from a third gen or earlier iPod Touch or iPhone (of which each the iProduct and projector have I). So, no it's junk. But for the expectations junk deserves, and for projecting from an old iPod/Phone, it works.....like junk. Because it's just not bright enough. At all. It's real actual lumen output is more like.....3. By comparison, the 3M pico projectors (of which one have I) project at 30 lumens and a little over three times the resolution.

I can't replace my 1080p Optoma home theater projector with this $25 unit?? FAIL!

C'mon folks - $25? It's a toy, sure. Sounds like a great toy for the right person. And it looks kind of cool. Reminds me of something....nope, it's gone - can't put my finger on it.

If you want a PJ you can use to play movies on a sheet in the backyard, plan to spend a little more and get a good used one. If you want a home theater, be prepared to spend a lot more (duh).

It depends on the laptop. RTFM and if yours doesn't mention composite video you'd need to buy a converter. IMO any effort & cost isn't worth it given the results you'll get from these low res projectors (poor under ideal conditions - they're kids toys)

I have a friend who only has a 19" or 27" oldschool television.

Some people complained about the low resolution and how the brightness is kind of like watching an old television. Maybe it'll be like the television he has now only bigger?

Would this be any good for him to play a Gamecube on? It's the only game system he owns.

Right, I should have qualified that with - it needs the controller chip too, not just the LED. Such things exist, though since I just looked at everything and didn't do a very thorough job looking for the chip's specs (and also not knowing the specs of the LED itself), I'm not sure what would need to be gotten. Hence the more leg work thing. Which I will be doing in the future, just not now. :D

I can say that the heat sink this thing is attached to appears to be overkill huge. Room full of hackers there at the time agreed. Plus it has a fan, and room for more. I think small improvements could be made, and it's juuuust at the edge of 'pretty useful' already, so... yeah. Might be worth it, might not - it's really just the fun of it

*edit* Oh! And there's no telling if the chip already there could control a better LED. The one lead I found seemed to indicate it exists in much better products. That link is saved for further examination later, though I don't have it with me right now to point to.
