No, I haven't contacted Woot yet. This is their responsibility, but it's not their fault.

I did leave a message for someone at Viewsonic, and am waiting for a response. I don't want to get a replacement with another upside down screen.

From what I'm seeing in forums and other communities, many of the people complaining about severely poor viewing angles haven't noticed their screens are installed upside down.

I think, the upside down screen is a feature of the gtablet.

So is it the 3.7 lb pkgs that have been the problem ones? Because that's what I've got arriving tomorrow?

That black screen was an old issue that I believe 3389 fixed (if memory serves).

It is ... I had Angry bird black screen too. Update solved that.

Still running into other issues like slow browsing, no working weather app ... but I figure it will be rooted soon. I am really hoping a Netflix solution is coming sooner than later.

I wonder if I could take mine, when I get it tomorrow to let someone else do this stuff. I know nothing about any of this technical stuff. I am afraid to do it myself. If I had known I had to do all this I wouldn't have ordered it.

As soon as you installed clockworkmod, any updates have to be done differently - basically, OTA updates no longer work - this is why I downplay cwm until you get up to speed (in your case, however, you really needed it to fix your issue)

You can update to 3588 manually, via this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000

But the instructions are for standard recovery - with clockworkmod, you'd just point the tool to the update.zip file (or similar) and run it.

If you are stuck at the "!" just hold the power button and boot back into the UI (hopefuly that should work). Also, when you flash stock it will wipe clockworkmod and replace it with standard recovery again.

Sorry if this is confusing, but it is what it is.

I agree. Viewsonic QC should have gotten this squared away long ago. But there should be some QC at Woot I would assume as well.

Entire box was shrink wrapped, no finger print smudges on the screen, no scratches on the unit, and the power cable was neatly bundled with tie wraps (not rubber bands). I wish I had metrics for everyone, but so far there seems to be some inconsistencies with what's being received. At least a few are used, a lot are new (at least via this forum).

The Angry Birds black screen is a major concern - that should NOT happen with build 3389, it was actually the first build that fixed that problem. If you are seeing this issue, I would recommend checking your build number and report it here, please. If some of you have 3389 but others have 2967 or 2963 (and I hope you don't) then the 296x users definitely want to upgrade to the latest stock right way. 296x builds are also more prone to FC's, acore issues and just plain old failure to boot - that build stunk big time.

Sorry that these don't seem consistent, but don't shoot the messenger. I don't even work for these companies, I'm just a GTAB owner like the rest of you!

To shed some light on some of you who think the tablet is used...

I just got one from JR Computer world 2 weeks ago that came in mint physical condition, but had the dlink network saved, angry birds installed, previous browsing history etc.

For a minute I thought someone else already used it first, but the tablet was in such pristine condition I didnt worry about it much. I mean no finger prints scratches or anything.

My GF just got one from woot, and had the exact same network saved, browsing history, etc, and hers is also in mint condition.

IMO that is too much of a coincidence. I bet they come from the manufacturer that way.

Fedex shows mine as having arrived at the Fedex facility in Ellenwood, GA as of 12:01AM today.
Why is it still there?

More important, why did it go there at all? Atlanta is 5 hours northeast of Panama City, FL.

So, I asked Fedex, and it will soon be on a truck to the local depot in Crestview, FL which is 1 hour West of here.

I agree. But if it has fingerprints, previous browsing history, scratches, & a rubber band securely the power adapter...I think it is safe to assume it isn't directly from the factory to the package.

Just got mine today and another will arrive tomorrrow. I charged mine about 5 minutes and had to turn it on just to briefly play with it. I like the stock background active water scene. That's pretty cool. It had about 16% charge by the time I did power it up. It was new...no smudges, no scratches, fully shrink wrapped. The shipping weight per Fedex was 3.7 but the one coming tomorrow says 4.1.

I got the OTA update to 3588 without a hitch. I can't tell if the screen is upside down...looks the same to me but I didn't spend much time on the lunch break looking closely at that.

I'll report on the one coming in tomorrow to see if it's any different since the weight is 4.1.

If it looks new and is clean, that's one thing. On the other hand, some of the people here are reporting receiving items that clearly aren't in that condition. That to me seems like Viewsonic mixed their return/refurb units and dumped a mixed bag-o-junk onto Woot.

While this is my first (and likely last) Woot purchase (they're slow shipping drives me crazy--even though they put that up front), I don't think Woot is to blame here. I'd like to see the supply/sales agreement between the parties to see exactly what representations Viewsonic made and what Woot would have required or requested in those agreements, but I think this falls on Viewsonic's shoulders.

Just a lurker here, but I feel like I need to ask people to cut Woot some slack. It sounds like these used tablets are coming from factory to look like a new sealed box. What did you want Woot to do? Open 10,000 boxes and check for smudges?

Can we just go back to waaambulancing about how long it's taking for these to get here.

roebeet wrote:To everyone with wonky screens - there might be a software fix. And it works with stock, try this:

- create a file called "calibration.ini", and place it on the root of the internal memory. So, for example, it the device is mounted on the E:\ drive, it would be E:\calibration.ini. This file can be an empty file.

- Umount the drive, and reboot the device. DON'T TOUCH THE SCREEN while it's rebooting.

- After the UI is up, let it sit for 15-20 seconds, just to be safe. Then try the screen again - assuming it's fixed, please DELETE the calibration.ini file.

Basically, that file is a "flag file" to run the built-in calibration tool, on boot. So you don't want it there all the time.

Hope this helps!

The step missing is how to access the internal memory when the touchpad doesn't work. Connecting via USB cable to another computer isn't working.

ETA: REBOOT fiss everyting! Thank you for the steps; hubby just rebooted with a SD card in with said calibration.ini file and now the touchscreen is responsive. Thank you!

Agreed - if your screen is so bad that you can't mount it, then it's not going to work.

You can't put the calibration.ini on a microSD, it doesn't work with stock (it does exist on mods - so, conceivably, you could install a mod like TNT Lite over the microSD, then add the calibration.ini onto the microSD as well. This is known to work with our mods). Rooted mods also enable adb by default, which allows you push up files to your sdcard partition.

You have options - the problem is that it might take some time and trial and error, and we don't even know if the file will fix it.

EDIT: didnt see that last EDIT. Awesome!! I was pretty sure the microSD ini change didn't work with stock, but I am not complaining!

cwm ,8 doesn't recognize the microSD (/sdcard2) - it's a limitation of that version. The newer versions can read the microSD, but they can soft-brick device so we avoid them.

That is correct. They are waiting longer for something they should have gotten originally. I am not saying Woot dropped the ball, it is obvious ViewSonic did. I think with the magnitude that Woot had to order, process, and ship there were bound to be a few bad apples. That still doesn't take away from the fact that someone is allowed to be angry or frustrated with not getting what they pay for.

I go back to my previous point...it is easy to be objective when it isn't your money.

These applications (Angry Birds, etc.) were added at the factory along with the browser history info, etc. They just didn't clean things up too well before imaging them.

I'm impressed with the quality of the build for a $280.00 unit. Yes, the screen viewing angles kind of sucks but you'll get used to it.

Already rooted, Clockworked and installed Vegan 5.11. Nice rom and it works well.

In summary it's not as nice as my Xoom 3G but it was $500.00 cheaper! Motorola must hire more expensive and more competent Chinese to do there builds......

I got a "preowned one" and I agree with yuusou. Mine was shrinkwrapped so I can't fault woot here. 3.7 (if anyone is counting)

I can live with a few scratches/ smudges - although I have to admit, if the UI was better it would be easier to swallow. Mine seems 10X slower than my daughters 800 Motorola Defy, loses wifi constantly despite being in the same room as the router and launching the weather app keeps crashing it.

I am hoepful all will be solved with some custom roms but it is a poor example of a company rushing good hardware with poor software out the door before it was ready.

And the vendor ... is probably laughing his a$$ off right now.

You are all seriously worrying over nothing. These systems have obviously been imaged identically which includes the same browser history, Wifi config etc... If the packaging looks good, cables placed in box correctly it should be good to go barring there are no scratches. Smudges can be cleaned. Woot has no control over what was done at Viewsonic, I agree that they should be cut some slack. Its just alot of whining, you bought a tablet that out of the box was known not to work, what the hell do you want!

But for the rest that are whining and haven't received it yet, well...it't just a bit ridiculous. For those talking about the screen upside down, it isn't installed upside down. It's just a poor screen.

Think about this... They probably used an off the shelf screen that would have gone into a netbook or something. When you view a netbook you don't look at the screen from that angle. However, you do see it from top down.

That is probably why the viewing angle is better from the top than the bottom.

As for the browsing history and water background and such, I'm betting a not very clean image, doesn't mean the device is *used*.

EDIT: Installed Vegan, Supplement, Clemsyn's kernel and the thing was ROCK solid all day today. I used and abused it today. Wish my protectors would get here...
