Probably not. Most of these were probably returned when the buyer realized for the same price they could have had a real computer rather than a juiced-up cell phone that won't make phone calls.

Remote Desktop, my friend. I used to laugh at the idea of a tablet as a laptop replacement. But now, having enough apps to cover most basic computing tasks, plus the ability to get in and grab my actual computer when needed...takes the cake for me.

Exactly what I was thinking... unless they've been making and selling a hella lot of these things, it seems really early to have a wootable amount of refurbs available. And that makes me wonder a lot about the overall quality and reliability level of the product. Given I've not heard about record sales of XOOM tablets, then either a lot of people have been buying, and returning immediately (unsatisfied with the way the tablet works, what it does, performance, etc) or one heck of a lot of these have been going back DOA..

either way, as mr 8-ball says. 'outlook not good'

For half the price you can by a refurbed nook color on ebay, then root the sucker fairly easily to get a very comparable android tablet. The biggest difference would be screen size. In this demo they look pretty similar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq9qu9yftWA

The MicroSD card does not yet work in the US. The 3.1 Android update that came out in Europe last week or so enabled it for them. The 3.2 update is due out, and believed to have the SD card enabled. But honestly, with 32 GB, I haven't needed it yet.

I believe the upgrade being mentioned here is the 4G upgrade, and since this is the WiFi version, is not relevant. But I don't believe it has been release yet (mines Wifi only so its moot). I use a portable router with a USB stick (or FreeTether on my Pre2) when I need cell access.

3.2 update for the WiFi Xoom was released yesterday. Info can be found here:

The ASUS Transformer. We have an EEE netbook that has performed admirably for years, but a lot of complaints of defective screens and plastic coming apart on the ASUS transformer. Would have pulled the trigger on that otherwise.

I hate my XOOM...

My Xoom browser crashes on a regular basis. I really hate it. Usually it crashes subtly by not responding to any links, url, or bookmark requests but still allowing me to view the current page by scrolling it. It also will just freeze and get a force close or wait prompt. It's important to note that these issues occur with 3rd party browsers as well. So it is either Xoom hardware or Honeycomb.

Video of mine of a particular oddity with the browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCFYx-17AXA&lc=wHvG5ptEZafNEwo6u7kCNDwj_YA_9fB_r2726LbEsq0

I don't feel like installing any form of ad blocker, as they hurt the websites developers. I can click on an embedded youtube video and it plays without issue or having to switch to a youtube app.

I laugh, my Nokia N800 tablet 2005, which predates the even the original iPhone supports flash! Epic fail Apple.

Flash is always resource hogging. Yes, it can be convenient to have it when necessary, but I would leave it off 99% of the time.

I don't believe in ad blockers either. Those ads support the websites whose content you're viewing. If people don't like the ads, they shouldn't view the content. However, websites detect that you don't have Flash and just show you non flash versions of ads on the iPad.

Can the lack of Flash be annoying? Yes, but it's greatly overused on the internet right now. Apple has a long history of not including things that were holding back the tech world. The iMac didn't have a floppy drive and only had USB ports for peripherals at a time when this was unthinkable. The only way to push people forward is to just take away their old ways of doing things. Just look at all the crappy PS2 and other useless ports still included on almost every other computer. Apple is forcing companies to stop using Flash when it's unnecessary and I 100% support this.

gooblikon wrote:Apple doesn't deserve credit for anything, they just take the base of everyone else's programs and puts ridiculous hipster crap into it, I mean look at what they did to Linux with their crappy OS' and they stole the "i" from IT people's abbreviation for internet in acronyms which doesn't make any sense for them to take!

Mac OS X didn't use anything from Linux. I believe you're looking for BSD UNIX. They obviously have done something, because I don't see 99% of the population ever using FreeBSD on their computer, phone, or tablet. If they didn't make great contributions to KHTML why does everyone use Webkit over KHTML?

I bought one, kept it for a week, returned it & got an iPad2 instead. The Xoom was too slow to reposition for horizontal to vertical, it would take up to 5 seconds or more most times; it didn't register well with the touch screen so I'd be tapping & tapping to get it to do something or to scroll; can't use Netflix; couldn't read any of my ebooks on it (Sony doesn't have a good app for it); so what was the point? It was way too frustrating.

The iPad is a much better fit for me.

I love my xoom it is an amazing piece of technology and superior to the ipad in every way.

Java, Flash, Multi-tasking, SD, USB, HDMI, video, nice camera. GPS, Bluetooth tethering (awesome), When I plug it in, oh look, it's the F: Drive and there's a music folder... copy files, done.

The best part: I don't need the itunes virus.

Why would you buy something that can't do flash and you have to break it to put what you want on it?

Because this something isn't hindered by flash's myriad issues AND its closed-system approach does quite well at keeping out malware, viruses, etc., plus the fact that anything I personally want or need to do - well, there's an app for that.

That is not 100% true. While it is true that that you need a data connection for the out of the box Google Navigation, a quick search on the app store reveals dozens of offline alternatives. My personal favorite is CoPilot. It cost $25 USD but is one of the accepted standards for offline navigation. There are cheaper (and free alternatives) as well.

Yeah, i tried rebooting the router, and lots of other things. The router issued an ip address (which is what i used to set it up manually) but the devices didn't get the memo...tried on two routers at home with no luck, but when i went to public spots (secure and open) they hooked up without any problems. After configuring them manually they surf the web and feed me pandora tunes without any problems.

Spent LOTS of time today (meaning since Midnight) going over the ipad2 VS Xoom debate ...
I was pretty close to being sure I wanted an iPad2 - but at $400 I started to rethink ...

I watched a very detailed comparison on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTPUdGjTp0E
(all 4 parts its over an hour)

The video was great except that he does not think the issue of Apps is that important ....

So in the end I looked at which things were important for me.

From all my reading I have no doubt that the Apps Store / selection etc. of Ipad is superior - I even spent time on the Google Android App Store and the Amazon Android Apps store .. And I found both to be very schlocky experiences compared to the Itunes Apps store.

But when I thought about my "dealbreaker" apps needed it was
Reader
GotomyPC
Really Good PDF reader / annotation etc.
Digital Ink / Handwritten etc into (evernote)

And I found that even if the Itumes Store and Apps were more mature I could get what I wanted.

As I watched that video above I kept my own score of "important to me differences" and this is what I came up with ...

Ipad is lighter
Ipad has a better App store and more "usable" Apps at this point.

Xoom has a GPS with the Wifi Only Model (on Ipad2 the actual GPS is on the 3G chip) - to me this was such a big deal that I was looking at aftermarket GPSs to add to my Ipad2 (and the ones that work are like $100)

Xoom has 32GB and (hopefully ability to add in memory)

I also like that I can use the Xoom with a simple cable to have HDMI out (I show lots of video presentations - so I would have bought the $50 ipad converter)

Smaller things that I liked about the Xoom
better camera
better video detail

In the end I went for it and bought the Xoom.
I am pretty sure the price pushed me.
I was not thrilled - but hoped as many people wrote - that refirbs are OK - and this has a full 1 year warantee so I feel better.

I think the real reason I pulled the trigger was I would have wasted so much more time trying to figure out what to get - that I would lose it in productivity ...
