Ed, why do you need/want a gate for the driveway. Won't that be a pita every time you go in or out?

Agree about the times, would much rather have the actual time of the post. //heading to the beta feedback//

Good evening Poof. The reason we need a gate is twofold. First, everybody here has a fence around their yard and gates to the door and driveway. It is not a crime thing, almost every country in Europe is pretty safe, it is more of an it's my land thing. Land is scarce in Europe compared to the US and if you have a piece you feel very proprietary about it. The ability to own land was one of the things that drove many immigrants to the US from Europe years ago. In more recent time, in the former communist countries, there were a couple of generations where the idea of owning land or a house was an unheard of dream. In our case the other reason is practical. We have two Labrador retrievers, a yellow one and a chocolate one. If you know anything about Labs, they are wonderful, kind, intelligent, gentle dogs and they LOVE everybody. The yellow Lab, Stanley is 3 years old and he has taken it upon himself to be the official neighborhood greeter. We live at the end of a small road but anyone that comes on our road, whether they live here or are coming to see somebody is a potential new friend for Stanley. He is usually very obedient and well behaved unless he wants to go swimming or he wants to greet somebody and he will go tearing off to see the person no matter how much you yell, scream or call him bad names. His little sister Bella is also very nice but she wants to do everything big brother does so off she goes too. The other day the neighbor left their gate open and off went Bella to say hi and she would have gone into their house with them if I hadn't stopped her. So the fenced/gated yard is the only way to keep my exceptionally friendly dogs under control. So even if we didn't have the dogs, we would have the gate which I would probably leave open all the time, but this way we can leave the dogs outside, on their own without fear that they will go into everybody's house begging for snacks all of the time. If we are in and out all day, we can park in front of the house and just go in the foot gate and don't need to open the driveway gate all of the time. I actually thought about running the fence down either side of the driveway to the garage and having two more foot gates for yard access but that would be kind of silly and wouldn't look as nice. It wouldn't have been as much fun to build either!

Last but not least, I am not sure if I like the new look on the site or not. I lurked for about a year before I joined Woot, so I have been here pretty much since the beginning and seen all of the changes and read all of the moaning each time so I suppose I'll get used to this eventually like all the other time. (Remember Purple Woot anyone?)

Most areas here now don't let you fence the front yard.

I am always amazed at how few fences you see in the US whereas in Europe almost dwelling is fenced, even apartment buildings if there is even a small piece of open land to fence off. When I was a kid we roamed the neighborhood by way of the back yards often.

Ed - PM sent, and thank you!

poof - same around here. My sister's neighborhood is ridiculously strict to what kind of plants, and whatnot you can have in front. They even specify that you have to have grass, not just nice perennial planters in the front, even though she lives in the dessert!!! Personally, if we ever get to the front and back yard thing again, I want the front to be planters and paths, no mowing. The back can be the grass and it will be fenced, so if I don't mow because I'm busy it's only my problem.

Ice - we've done Canada with the oldest, but I don't have stashes for the next two (and Ver2 is about to enter kindergarten, so it'll be time soon). If you can get 2 sets of the coins that would help me out. Or I could get off my duff and get us border passes and go back to Alberta or British Columbia.... gosh I love it up there.

according to those web pages, if you have a NEXUS card or Enhanced Drivers License you can still drive or sail into the usa from canada. passports-only are only for air travel.

I'm not talking about homeowners associations. Many of our townships and counties prohibit front yard fences. That and vehicles on blocks is about all that's prohibited.

Not all states offer the enhanced card. Nexus cards are mostly for frequent crossers and require each person in the vehicle to have one, it can make your crossing a little quicker because basically you have been "pre-checked"but doesn't exept you from search etc.
This is as best as remember from my many conversasions with Homeland Security and CBS(Canadian Boarder Services).

There's a card that you fill out most of the passport stuff for, but it's less expensive and easier to get. It lets you into Canada and Mexico, and back. That's what most people here have. Once you get them, you can upgrade them to passports really easily. That's what I was referring to. We are 4 hours or so from the border.

I was thinking they would be easier, since the kids have to be updated so often. We don't fly (unless I get my pilots license, but not happening this year), so we just need to get back in via the road.

I'm not familiar with the card (unless this is the NEXUS card). Again it is easier to get into Canada than into the U.S. . Even people from my hometown all have passports and they live less than 5 minutes from the boarder.

passport cards are mentioned in the us govt site linked by inky.

edit: according to wikipedia, they are only issued to u.s. citizens. "The U.S. Passport Card is a wallet-size travel document, issued to U.S. citizens only, that can be used to enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda at land border crossings or sea ports-of-entry and is more convenient and less expensive than a passport book. The passport card cannot be used for international air travel."

Ah, I'm not a U.S.citizen and this is fairly new.

As for the combatibility...not sure how to do that. The only thing that I can find regarding compatibility says they can't be set on this program because it is part of this version of Windows

See if this helps you figure out the compatibility mode stuff.
