I want to point out that this is Windows 7, but it's Windows 7 starter. Now Windows 7 is great, but I haven't heard very good things about Windows 7 Starter.

All the specifications seem to be the same more or less. However, anyone know which of these companies have the best "out of warranty" service? Or even the best customer support?

this is the way to do it woot
i would advise you to get the asus i have seen it last and have very few problems and i see them all the time
and asus has software to change your desktop picture which is one of the draw backs to windows 7 starter.

Would not buy!!!!!!

Gateway/Acer/eMachines has horrible customer support. I bought a monitor from them and they absolutely refuse me warranty support. I've mailed it to them twice for repair and gotten it back unrepaired and with several physical scuffs and scratches afterward with a form letter saying they couldn't figure out what was wrong with it after I described the problem in excruciating detail.

BEWARE is what I am saying. If anything goes wrong with this kiss any chance of them fixing it goodbye.

Asus on the otherhand I have found to always be helpful and make incredible reliable computer parts I've used in every build I've done. Get that before they're gone.

The Gateway has a better - newer - CPU. It looks like a clone of the newer Acer Netbook - which gets great battery life with the 6 cell battery.

Seems like the Gateway with the Atom N450 / GMA 3150 has the best performance of the bunch. Of course when it comes to Intel integrated crapgraphics, "best" is like saying which outhouse stinks the least.

The Gateway is Tony the Tiger GRRRREATTT! Atom 450 chip set uses less power than the 270's the others have. Nice package and can easily be upgraded with a graphics decoder for near HD quality video. This is a grrrreattt deal.

All of these netbooks have CERTIFIED WI-FI (all in caps to show how important it is I'm sure) -- so what is UNCERTIFIED WI-FI...? And that's kind of a legitimate question.

Strange though the that Acer 6-cell and Asus 3-cell are rated at 5200 mAh. # of cells doesn't matter, it's the mAh that determines capacity. Either it's a tyop on Woot's part, or the Asus uses fat 3-cellers.

I bought the Gateway LT2104U the last time it went on sale, and I've found myself using it all the time now. I tend to use it the most whenever I'm in class, and so far the battery had not once failed to surpass my time in class without me plugging it in. Even though it is a netbook, it still has some power in it, and the GREAT thing with the N450 processor that the N270 doesn't have is hyper-threading. It may not seem like a huge difference, but the virtual dual-core capabilities on the netbook really does make a performance difference. Windows 7 Starter isn't that bad, but I still used my Technet subscription to upgrade it to Home Basic.

However, with that said, what I would recommend doing with this netbook is getting a 2 GB stick of RAM for it. You'll notice a huge difference, especially in boot times. But, don't be like me and get a DDR2 PC5300 stick -- this netbook will only accept a 2 GB DDR2 PC6400 (otherwise, the system wont POST.) Don't want to see anyone else out there making the same mistake I did!

got an 15.6" E-machine laptop last black Friday at wal-mart for $197, has daily use as a service truck computer, no issues. E-Machine was bought by Acer a while back and now has a better rep then the Best Buy crap boxes from a few years back.

Is there a random selection button on this woot?

You're having problems because we don't allow images in signatures for those with no purchases. We had some spamming issues. Not sure how long this image will stay before it gets eaten too.

The only real differences you will notice in netbooks between Windows 7 Home Premium, and Windows 7 Starter is that with Starter, you can't change the background or the Visual Style (set to Windows 7 Basic as default), and Windows Aero isn't available.

Other disadvantages include only 32-bit support, not 64-bit, and no .NET Framework support.

For netbooks, Windows 7 Starter is effective. It takes the glossy (and GPU intensive) Aero from the mix, and there is absolutely no reason you need to throw in more than 4GB of RAM as 2GB is more than sufficient to run any netbook.

And on a netbook, you aren't going to be doing any hardcore computing. Netbooks are designed to be portable. You sacrifice power for convenience. No, this will not run World of Warcraft. I'll answer that question before it even comes up.

Yes, you get the annoying OEM background. That can be changed, and all you have to do is Google "Windows 7 Starter background hack" and I'm sure you'll find something to ease your "pain".

Happy w00ting!

I'm beginning to wonder when and why netbooks became popular. Not only do I see them for sale everywhere but I also notice more and more people have one. What's up with the world? Do we not set standards for ourselves? I mean aren't we suppose to be going hi-def with bluray instead of limiting our computer choices by choosing those without a disc reader/writer at all?

Only ONE problem: it's a Gateway...

And, what, exactly, is near-HD quality video? -- I'm unfamiliar...

I just got the gateway netbook (Lt20, Red, 250gb, 1gb ram, win 7, and 6cell)two weeks ago and it works like a dream. I still use my 2006 mx3215 gateway for work at home and my 2010 asus (4gb ram and 320gb hddrve) for gaming, but I wanted something I could lug around without a big huge suitcase. This is the answer. My netbook is a six cell so it lasts about 4 hours. It's light and portable. No optical drive so no video games. Don't try streaming video or satiliate radio because video skips and internet radio loads to much. This is great for checking email, logging on to your credit or bank accounts or internet shopping. This little guy is a secondary so don't try using it as a primary. Make sure your hands are not too big because the keybourd is smaller but not by much.

Actually one other disadvantage of Win 7 starter is no dual video output- only cloned. You have to have the same screen on the netbook as on the projector (or second monitor), even if the hardware is capable. I discovered this when trying to use a netbook for running projection software (something like powerpoint where you have a display you want to see of what's coming up and notes while the vga output is fed the display you want on the projector).

Yes, some do with certain restrictions (no wifi, etc). Check this chart:
http://www.mymacnetbook.com/compatibility-chart/

The Gateway isn't on there, but I found a thread with people saying they were successful:
