It will support WPA2 Personal.

One word of warning about Android (at least 2.2 and lower). If you do not broadcast the SSID, Android will have fits finding the network with some routers. And, really, there's little benefit to hiding the SSID as any script-kiddie can find it in about ten seconds.

Also...no one has asked...YET. No. It will not be getting Android 3.0 any time soon. Don't ask.

A few additional notes:

This tablet CAN connect to ad-hoc networks, at least with custom ROMs. This is useful if you want to connect to your phone acting as a hotspot.

The screen angles leave much to be desired, but It has not caused me any trouble. As woot! says, this is a FEATURE! It helps protect your privacy by preventing people sitting next to you from reading your screen!

I recommend getting a screen protector because the original screen surface is really bad with finger prints.

A friend has one and loves it. At this price, the only competition is the Barnes & Nobles color Nook ($249), but this Viewsonic is much more capable. It has a faster CPU (800 mhz vs 1 ghz), more memory (8 gb vs 16 gb), larger screen (7" vs 10.1"), etc, etc for only $30 more. Plus, this has a mic and 1.3 mp camera.

A Nook was built for reading but can be changed into an Android tablet. This was built as an ANdroid tablet that can also be an eReader.

Paid $379 for mine back in January and have never regretted it a minute. After loading an alternative ROM (VEGAnTab 5.1) I never looked back. Outperforms my office neighbor's ipad in overall "snappiness" and I use it for many things.

I for one, could give a ratsass about the viewing angle. I didn't buy it to be a portable TV for the office fer chrissake, I got so I can see it. And guess what? I can! Quite well, propped on an $12 Arkon stand or in my hand/lap browsing TVguide or IMdb.

I have to say: for the price, this thing is really packed to the gills with features... great deal, and hardware-wise REALLY competitive with iPad. I just can't wait for an adaptation of Honeycomb for this...

God I'm tempted. If there were only a way to hookup a projector through the USB port and display a Powerpoint presentation, I'd be 100% for sure in for 1.

There is a port on the bottom that can be used for a docking station of sorts. The dock has HDMI out, a full sized USB port, and a WIRED ethernet port.

Rumors that NVIDIA dropped support for this version of Tegra2 are not completely accurate. They will still work with open developers on the SDK.

Been thinking of getting an ipad2 but the pricetag on em is keeping me on the fence.

Yes. For .cbr comics I recommend Perfect Viewer, which is free and performs excellently, especially on the gTablet's larger screen. (This does require installation of a custom ROM as otherwise you don't have access to the Android Market.)

Terrific value for the money IF you use another ROM, such as Vegan, and can tolerate the absolutely awful screen viewing angle.

Not in the stock ROM (I believe they just bumped that up to 2.2 and will probably never go to 3.0) but the gTablet should be able to run 3.0 at the very least once Google releases the source code for the custom ROM developers to get their hands on it.

the g tablet is dual core but the firmware only recognises one core. NVIDIA probably won't produce drivers to run honeycomb, but this tab has a huge support team of basement dwelling developers. If you're willing to read up on some forums, this tablet is top-tier.

I purchased one of these last week and I gotta say... Its been hard to put down. The first thing you have to do though when you get one is flash it over to one of the modded versions of Android that are available. The most popular one with the gTablet is VEGAn-TAB, which is what I'm running on mine right now (7.0.0 GingerEdition) Not only will you see your speed increase from the stock ROM, but you'll also be running on Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) instead of 2.2 (Froyo). Plus, this tablet has the new nVidia Tegra 2 chipset in it, which actually delivers some decent graphics when it comes to gaming, and is still a dual-core tablet for when you're browsing the web.

I own this and am not crazy about it though I do use it a little. I keep it by my bed to read at night, and check email and weather. Screen is not good enough and software is clunky. I do have an Android HTC Evo that I like very much, which contributed to my buying the gTab, but the g tablet is too big to carry around (unlike pocketable Evo) and not as capable as a PC. I don't have iPad2 but have played with it and it is much nicer (but much more expensive) than gTab. Another problem is that back and home buttons are not lighted so can't use device in the dark, and my menu button has never worked.

If you get this (I have one) You need to root it and put another firmware on it, then it will be the greatest tablet out there, right now I am running Android 2.3.3 w/ full market.

Mine just came in today, actually. Even though you can tell its cheap when you pick it up, its surprisingly sturdy, and the stand on the back actually works pretty well. The only complaint I really have about the keyboard is that the keys are kind of small, and so sometimes you end up pushing the wrong key, especially if you're trying to put down a comma or question mark.

With a hardware keyboard and a custom ROM I would say that this could do all of the above things, yes. I'm a little dubious about recommending it as a netbook replacement in general because Linux and Windows are both OSes with a much longer history of development and a wider range of application support (and/or feature support on mutually present applications) than Android at this point. And I'm not sure the tablet format has any specific advantages for your listed usage patterns that would be worth shelling out another $300+.

I tried that, but at tablet resolution I found the images were unacceptably blurry. I think it might also have been lacking features I find useful, but I don't recall.

1080p video playback? Yes, the device has a resolution of 1024x600, but what you must understand is that the device is CAPABLE of playing back 1080p videos (at a considerably lower bit-rate of course) via hardware decoding by the NVIDIA Tegra 2 harmony chipset. It comes with a trailer of Peter Jackson's King Kong encoded at 1920x1080 @ 8MBit/s with the VC-1 codec (Profile MP@HL) in order for the user to test it's capability for themselves. Also, one should note the proprietary port on the underside of the unit which - when coupled with the right accessory - is capable of HDMI output.

The speakers are actually decent (for a tablet of course so don't expect much) but I find their positioning weird. As most anyone with this device can attest to, this device performs best in landscape mode and your hands are bound to cover up the speakers when doing so.

Out of the box, your best venture will be to brush up on flashing your choice of VeganTab, VeganTab GE (Note, that you'll be giving up HW video playback), CM 7, or TnT Lite 4.4.0 (which looks to likely be the final release for some time to come). All options are better than the provided and updated (horrendously buggy and FC-happy) Tap 'N' Tap firmware in my opinion.

I'm actually used to small keyboards being a two time netbook owner. Good to hear the case is sturdy, is the tablet itself enough to replace a netbook? The only thing I could really see myself missing is maybe the Office Suite, but I'm graduating in 2 weeks..

I bought one in March and a 2nd during the Woot Off in April. Love them. Need to root it and put on a new ROM. Go here. Lots of good help.

Officially - no. Viewsonic announced they won't support honeycomb on it. Unofficially, I'm sure it wont be long before the guys at xda will cook up a honeycomb edition of their custom roms. The down side - video acceleration hardware will probably not work so well without native drivers. The good side is - it will probably still rock, because those custom roms are just so much better then stock.

Writing this from my gtab I bought back in March - running Vegan rom (gingerbread, aka 2.3 edition, which is by the way is also not officially supported by viewsonic).

Heck, on my original android device - the first ever: G1 from t-mobile, they stoped supporting it beyond android 1.6 or so (if not 1.5), but thanks to modders, I've had it running 2.1 before I bit the bullet and picked up a G2 (which currently runs 2.3 - again not yet officially released for it)...

Don't hold me for my words, but if the rule that the history tends to repeat itself lives up - there's a long life for this device beyond the official suport timeframe.

Not until 3.0 is released for people to customize. My suspicion is that it will run reasonably well, but given my experience with the Galaxy Tab, 2.2 is really fine for most things anyways.

Well I'm looking to replace this netbook which is incidentally falling apart on me. It's not really about upgrading so much as I need a replacement and thought the gtab might be an interesting route to go

Well, if you need to replace the netbook anyway, then yeah, the gTablet would probably work for what you want to do.

Depends entirely on what you're doing, honestly. I've been using it for some of my homework and such, and I do have to admit it does take a bit more to multitask with the device (as it does with any android device.) If you don't plan to swap between windows constantly, then I would recommend that you get it and get the cover that's on Amazon as a netbook replacement. When comparing it to my netbook, the touchscreen does make it easier (and a bit more futuristic, I might add) to use, and the keyboard fits my needs when it comes to IMing and emails and such. Plus, there is a "lite" Office replacement suite (not made or endorsed by MS) that is available on the Android Market if you are interested (though if you end up getting it, I'd suggest wiping the device and getting VEGAn-TAB, which is a third-party custom version of Android for the gTablet that comes with an Android office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet program, presentation creator, and PDF viewer.

Honestly, I'm just looking for a tablet to view CBR/CBZ's on. I'm sick of reading comics on my phones screen and don't want to go the IPad route.

Anyone with a gtab use it to read comics?

Thanks to all those who helped, looks like this could be a good fit. The only window changing I ever do is for IMs which will be in the taskbar up top so this might work out.

I heard it has slots available for both sim card as well as gps chips to be installed(soldered in). Wanted to know if that is indeed correct or not? and if so, has anyone tried either of them?

Yep. Roebeet is a great help. My first one came and wouldn't even boot. Just looped. He helped me out a lot.

I own this tablet from a previous woot and I think it is certainly worth the money. I am running vegan tab and the only things that bother me is that it makes the tablet think it is a phone and for some reason it can't seem to charge to 100% any more. I haven't really done any research into the battery matter yet although I am sure there are fixes out there. Even with that issue, the battery life on this thing is fantastic. If you are in the market for a tablet and not afraid to mod it this is an excellent buy.
