Android like basically all mobile devices nowadays uses a Webkit based browser. Webkit was created by Apple so website compatibility will be basically the same as with Safari.

the xoom has a way better screen.

i have a xoom, a transformer, ipad and ipad 2 (for app development). they all have their pros and cons. setting up the wifi on the xoom and the transformer gave me the same problem: i had to configure the network settings manually. i thought it was a problem with the xoom until i ran into the same situation with the transformer (i haven't had the time to troubleshoot it: they both hung up when trying to obtain an ip address from my router (regardless of security settings), but managed to connect fine at a nearby wifi hotspot...if anyone has a suggestion regarding this behavior, i would love to hear it). no such problems setting up the ipads though. as an aside, the keyboard on the transformer combines the numbers and letters on one view...that is such a nice feature!

but this is a great price for the xoom! i would pick one up if i didn't already have one. the tablet works nicely, has gps, and hasn't given me any problems other than the networking issue. it does weigh a little more than the transformer and the ipads, though.

I am not sure what the built in browser runs, but I believe it is a Chrome variant. There are other alternative browsers available for it including Opera and Skyfire, but no IE.

Holding out for a 4:3 Tablet at this point, I just don't like the 16:9 form factors, too narrow on one end.

I used to own one of these and remember sitting next to a iPad2 dude at the Atlanta airport. I told him all the vital stats of my Xoom - bigger screen, better camera etc. etc. The poor sap ... all he could brag about was the huge number of apps he could access on his iPad2.

While he was playing with his pages and pages of apps ... I was admiring the resolution of my Xoom. Who needs apps! Right?

Honeycomb is the name of android's tablet OS. Ice cream sandwich is the next gen OS; supposedly, it'll cover phones, tablets and whatever else is android powered.
I've got a first gen ipad and I think it's great to use. Yes, it's limited, but it's not supposed to be a desktop replacement.
As far as android tablets are concerned, I think it's pointless if you have to hack it to make it usable. Without hacking, you don't get netflix, etc.

Can this thing run the Netflix app?

There is no official Chrome browser. It's a Webkit variant.

And Opera and Skyfire are crap. You want Dolphin Browser HD.

Not sure about your connection issue, I've joined a couple dozen networks without issue on my Xoom. Perhaps your router's DHCP is racist?

Right, because the Android app market only has one or two apps.

The trick is do that on a PC or a Terminal server and then use the Remote Desktop App to log in with your Xoom.

I bought a Xoom for my wife and loved it so much, I bought one for myself. It is superior to the ipad in EVERY way.

As others have stated, you are very likely to have the same problem with the browser on the Xoom.

Have you checked out the new HP Touchpad?

I was running into the same issue with a site I use for my work. To my surprise, the site actually works with the HP Touchpad's browser. I don't know what browser it is, but HP uses webOS for their interface and it's pretty slick. Depending on where you live, you can probably test the browser out by using the display model at your local retail store. That's what I did.

I think you can add 12/21/12 to the write-up (I'm not paranoid)....or (I may be paranoid).

I am reading this and commenting via my XOOM. No problems, love it, etc. I got the update today and so can confirm the sd card support works.

I've had my Xoom since release, no hacking, no rooting, no anything other than apps from Android Market and Amazon Market. Works fantastic, and does everything I want except taking screenshots, but I need to root to use a screenshot app.

Did you unlock the bootloader for development? I remember seeing something related to that and having to reboot every time you reconnect to some wifi networks. (Or something about 3.1 and it's network "lock" feature.) Mine is rooted (and therefore unlocked) and I have that issue with one free wifi network that I use frequently. Other secure and open networks I use don't have that issue though.

Love mine. A few nits:
- proprietary charger
- doesn't run the Netflix or HBOGo app

Goodness:
- excellent game device
- ezcellent comic and kindle reader
- web browser is great
- honeycomb is great
- battery life is as advertised

For those of you on the fence and don't want to drink the apple kool-aide, it's a very high-quality device.

As a developer, I have several of the current tablets (ipad 1 & 2, Xoom, Playbook, Touchpad, and a couple different Archos units) and they all have pluses and minuses.

The Xoom has all the basics covered, and there are lots of apps between the two app stores (google's market and amazon's app store). The screen is excellent, it's fast, the chrome-based browser is excellent (and there is firefox and opera you can download), and of course the awesome live backgrounds. The gmail client is the best out there. Period. Amazon and google cloud based streaming as well as pandora work flawlessly on them. Google's is built into the music client, and now video is as well.


This is $200 less than I paid just a few months ago. If you are looking to get an alternative to Apple, this is an awesome deal.

why would you buy this when you can get an iPad for 350$

Yes, it's a bit upsetting about the netflix issue right now, but I think that's more of a lets ease our servers into it. I do think it is funny though because originally they said Netflix wasn't coming to the Qualcomm sets because they didn't support DRM or something on a hardware level and looked forward to the Tegra 2 chipsets for their main chipset.

Now the Tegra 2 chipset is out they are all of a sudden saying "Oh we're going to support the Qualcomm chips". BUT Google just released the new android market where you can rent movies and books from. But I'm not above editing a few files to make it work

GPS is independent of wifi or cell signals. It calculates your position from tiny differences in their clocks. No subscription required. Your tax dollars at work.

I doubt you will be able to bill with it (based on your previous comment) since IE doesn't work on the Xoom. But you should be able to try out a live demo unit in a store and see if the browser works with the site you use. If it doesn't work on the Xoom, try the HP Touchpad. I think you will have better luck.

Oh and FYI, I know for sure the Touchpad will play your iTunes music.
