gloryhound421 wrote:Has anyone else seen "Day After Tomorrow"? So so movie with a fantastic quote.

Elsa: What've you got there?
Jeremy: The Gutenberg Bible... it was in the Rare Books Room.
Elsa: Think God's gonna' save you?
Jeremy: No... I don't believe in God.
Elsa: You're holding on to that Bible pretty tight.
Jeremy: I'm protecting it.
[pause as Elsa glances at J.D. throwing books on the fire]
Jeremy: This Bible... is the first book ever printed. It represents... the dawn of the Age of Reason. As far as I'm concerned, the written word is mankind's greatest achievement.
[Elsa gives a light snort]
Jeremy: You can laugh... but if Western Civilization is finished... I'm gonna' save at least one little piece of it.

I so thought of this part of the movie!

I'd save The Dark Tower series - King, who won't let anyone sample his work manages to sprinkle in every other author he's read. Even got the Bible mixed in there for you religified folks.

Agreed. Everything that man can (& has) accomplish(ed) is in the Holy Bible. Read up & maybe you can manage to get off that island!

I am a Christian and I do read my Bible and it's the book I'd want with me the most, but in terms of proving mankind's literature abilities I'd definitely choose LOTR all the way. It's way better than all the ones on the list that I have read. Frankly I was surprised/shocked that it wasn't on the list of choices.

You know the Bible was the first school book. Taught people to read and literature and great stories/adventures all in one.
So of course, the Bible, hands down.

Not necessarily, we've been decoding unknown languages from civilizations that were lost for generations. The challenges would be significant but it's quite possible for someone to decode a language - especially if they got hold of some of our picture/teaching kids to read books as well.

bacalum wrote: If we're all dead, how will some other race determine what the printed words mean - assuming they're even recognized as words? If the ETs manage to catch some of our broadcasts, especially language instruction shows, they might be able to match sounds and printed markings to their meanings. Without context, markings on papers would be almost impossible to interpret.

So many Holy Bible votes on the first page and I am too lazy to look through the other pages. So I'll go with the Qur'an, claiming that the Torah is closer to the old testament than the Qur'an is.

Depends on which bible . . . some add more books to fit their agenda, others don't use some books to fit their agenda. Still others, completely rewrite it calling it a "new translation" or some such elusive title
