Got one in the hopes that its arrival in the mail will remind me to actually DO my taxes before 4/15. Right. Just like the 512 mp3 player I got 6 months ago has inspired me to workout as I promised myself when I bought it.

Woot, $5 shipping down the road to hell.

If you've got a relatively simple home business that you'd normally do a Schedule C for, yeah, it can handle it. If you've got some kind of a corporation going, or LLC, that kind of thing, then nope.

Yea sure. I guess it works, but I can't see sending those crooks any money when you can use Turbo Tax reliably year after year. Have been for years. Complex return. My $8000 refund is on it's way to my bank account now. Turbo Tax yes, H&R Block, NO.

If you gave the Feds an $8000 interest free loan you are in serious need of professional financial planning help. The intelligent approach is to underpay as much as you can without hitting the penalty threshhold and use the cash to reduce any outstanding debt or invest it.

Not everyone has an HR dept or consistent income from year to year.
If you don't pay enough in during the year, the IRS will smack you with
a penalty, so it is better to err on the side of paying extra. Having once received a large lump payment from a client late in December, I got to learn about this first hand. I'm not a laywer, consult your tax legal and professionals for actual advice.

PS, I use TaxACT which is a swell product.

You are obviously not a lawyer, or you would have known that you can easily avoid the underpayment penalty on irregularly received income late in the year by adding a one page form to your filing.

So I pay the $19.99 + $5 S&H for the software and thats it? Or will I have to pay again when I actually eFile my taxes? I usually get free software, then pay when I file. If thats the case, this isn't a good deal...but if this is all that I'm paying, then its a good deal. Can someone please verify??

I used TaxCut last year and it was a very positive experience. I always had an accountant do my taxes before, so I was a newbie to doing them myself and it was a breeze. Since I used it last year, I've been getting "deal" emails from H&R Block to purchase this same package as Woot's on a CDROM for $29.95 plus S&H so this is a great deal. When I'm done, it will be easy to store the whole USB drive as the record for this year's taxes.

Ditto.

I go back and forth between Turbo Tax and H&R ... got this one. Price is very good and I like the idea of having the thumb drive to store a copy of the return (with the software), should I need it for reference purposes, etc. later.

There are planty of FREE methods of filing, but if your's is a little more complicated, then, this package is hard to beat.

Yes, you will pay an extra 15 bucks to e-file with Taxcut, which is pretty standard. Print it and send it snail mail for free...either way it's a pretty good deal. I just picked one up! Taxact comes with free e-filing but you'll pay more for it elsewhere.

Are there any filing charges or are they included in the purchase cost? I remember last year there was a big stink about one of the two big companies (and I think it was H&R Block) charging relatively large amounts of money to e-file.
Oh, I guess I should have read all seven pages of postings before I added mine. So it sounds from above like there are additional charges of 15 dollars to E-file. I hate that.

Once you register a state on a computer it locks that computer to that state, so you have to buy additional states...
That is, ahem, unless you find a registry hack online that allows you to change it and delete the state data file when you're done filing with that sate...

Different perspectives... Your area's cost of living must be pretty high. $52,000 is a king's salary for a single twentysomething in a small city. That's $25+/hour, or probably $600+ per week after taxes. Around here, a week of that would nearly get you a 2-bedroom apartment with heat and water included.

That's not always possible with the EIC and the ACTC (Additional Child Tax Credit.) Last year we had $0 taken out in federal taxes (on a $65k income) and received a $7k tax refund. Basically we received a refund of our social security contributions.

But I agree - 99.9% of people who get a refund greater than $500 need to review their exemptions.

If you are eligible for EIC then you may be able to get it through out the year as will. If you meet the qualifications you can file a W-5 - Earned Income Creadit Advance Payment Certificate. Instructions & form can be found at irs.gov

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw5.pdf

And if you are under 50 and made less then $52,000 you are eligble for free file which includes free elctronic filing

I didn't have to pay a penalty because I had paid as much in taxes as I owed the previous year, (which is another of the "get out of it" ways) but that meant that the next year I got a return because to be safe I paid as much in taxes as I had the year with the big income boost.

Higher prices AND crappier blanks, no thank you

ok, I'm correct and wrong. I initally quoted saying there were no fees with premium but there are three versions of premium.

Premium
premium with state
and
premium with state and efile

only the last version ( premium with state with efile ) allows free efiling.

sorry for the mis-info.....
