I bought this last time around (2005 then). The one time I really wanted to use it, I couldn't get a signal.

Even with the updated maps, it gives incorrect directions to my house. Oddly enough, it gives correct directions from my house.

I think it will only give voice directions if it is installed in the laptop and it wont give voice directions when it is installed in the PDA.

The GPS Locater works fine since it is not manufactured by Microsoft. USB plugs into your laptop. Will work with 3rd party softwares which are MUCH better.

Streets and trips is by far the greatest map program out there - its super easy to use if you're not a complete moron. and by complete moron, i mean knowing the difference between Main St EAST and Main St WEST.

Good MS product. I have the 2005 version. It generally works very well. I have had a number of GPS systems and like this one the most. Plus software updates construction. If it were the 2007 version, I would purchase at this price.

Now, if we just had the 'hands free' pc voice controller with engine noise canceler, and automobile laptop stand, this could be useful! Of course, with a camera in the front of the car and a video window next to the GPS map, I guess it would be OK to watch while you are driving! If it doesn't nag, I might trade the old lady in on one! If she doesn't have too many miles on her already.

I think this is the new "Will it work with my Mac?" question.

Anyways, great price: was in Best Buy last night, I think this is still $100+ (Cheaper than their HDMI cables, *snort*)

Never wooting again. I've learned my lesson about inferior customer service and employees that illegally modify your signature (18 U.S.C. § 1029). Grow up, woot. (Edit of Mod edit: I am telling the truth about you modifying my signature to slander me. I am not attacking people. You dont qualify as "people" until you call me back and I hear a voice on the phone, then we can discuss how your employees are harassing me.) Still no response Since December 2010.

Not worth the money. A bluetooth GPS unit is barely more expensive and much more useful (you can use it with a phone or PDA) and the software bundled is awful.
The PocketPC portion of the software in particular is completely useless (no navigation and crappy, hard to read maps). On the positive side, you can download maps for many cities worldwide for free. I suppose that makes it a cute-ish present for a kid to introduce them to the world of GPS, but be prepared to desperately feel the need to upgrade.

Good, GPS H/W alone it is $99, good deal.
You can buy an adaptor for pocketPC and use it too. (use miniSD card slot)

MY dad got one and we took an across country trip. The whole trip was planned before hand with the software. The only problem we had was when one of the places we planned to go was named similarly to a place one the software. By mistake we went to the wrong place but we knew the intersection and looked it up then went there. The voice works well although I would highly recomend not using it by yourself. A passenger using it can look at what it says then tell the driver although It is possible to go by the voice alone. Because most people would use this with a labtop you can't easily look at the maps while driving so it's good to have a passenger. Otherwise overall it works really well. Just buy a Ac to Dc power converter for your labtop and you'll be good to go. Also includes time until next turn and distance and tells everything a normal GPS would like altitude. I'm not sure what my Dad paid but I think it was over double.

Don't care at all about the S/W, what I want to know is will the GPS unit work with my Linux based Car-PC, and is it any good? If not, any suggestions? I would actually like to stay away from bluetooth, so this seems reasonable.

Still in the building process and, though I am pretty computer saavy, I really don't know the first thing about GPS hardware.

This is one of my favorite Microsoft products ever, too.

It guided me from Mass. to Florida without incident last year.

The GPS seems to take a while (up to a minute) to lock onto the satellite signals on first startup. And sometimes the controls are a little too mouse-oriented for me to use on the road. (When to focus ends up on the wrong pane of the S&T window you need to click on the map to zoom in/out, etc). It DOES NOT annouce street names.

I've been running it fine on Vista for a while now. Was running it fine on XP for a while before. YMMV.

And.....an interactive GPS setup will SHOW you exactly WHICH "left" you need to take. Very handy in Boston if you don't know exactly where you're going. mapquest is no substitute for live GPS.

Any GPS navigation system will have map/nav db issues in certain areas, I haven't found many problems with this one.

I highly recommend it for $100, strong buy at $50.

Get a REAL GPSr. Lugging you lappy around just so you have mapping is a waste. Even if you have a car adapter for power, I doubt you will will be able to see the screen as you drive around and way to bright in the evening.

Costco has the 2007 version for $99. The '07 GPS receiver is faster to locate than the '06. I do have the '06 version and it works pretty well. It does not automatically re-route you when you decide not to follow the route it calculates - but pressing the 'F3' key forces a re-route. However, balancing a laptop in the seat next to you while driving is a pain! So I bought a TomTom One ($299) and I'm glad I did - a great product. However, a PND for $50 is a great deal if you are not going to be using it regularly. If you are going to use it all the time - spring for a dedicated PND.

The software works good, very few competing products in this market match up. The GPS unit that comes in this package, however, is another story. I've never used a GPS receiver worse than this, could never get a solid satellite fix and the coordinates would be jumping around all the time. One minute I'm cruising along in the Great Northeast, the next I'm somewhere in Cape Province, Africa... you get the picture.

Conclusion: Do yourself a favor and get a Garmin GPS 18 to go with the software.

I bought the 2005 version of this software with the GPS hardware in a Woot-Off and have loved it. Accuracy couldn't be better, and the points of interest are actually useful! At least the 2005 version works with Google Earth, since it's NMEA compatible, and I've also gotten it working on a Mac (using a hacked-up driver I managed to find).

Well, less that 200,000; but this is a high mileage model. Shocks are squeaky, mufflers are a bit noisy, and needs a bit of body work and a new pint job! (I call her Eileen, because one leg is shorter than the other!) But in the Wot tradition, you pay $5 shipping and she is all yours! (I can lend you the $5 if need be!)

So... on the subject of GPS, is there any other way to update one's maps (say on a Whistler WGPX-550 GPS Navigation System previously purchased on Woot!) other than by buying the update from the Whistler website when they come out with it? It has an SD card with the maps on it... Thanks to anyone with any info cause I know nothing about this.

My 2005 version recalculates automatically. Check the setting tab to allow. I does a good job with recalculation. Would purchase if it were 2007. GPS aquires a bit slowly at start up, no problem after that. If your a heavy user spring for the 2007 or a dedicated user, since this works best with laptop. For trips is great. For around town, my blackberry with nav even re-routes with traffic jams automatically, but its 7.50/M So for road trips this unit is great, around the city, get a dedicated unit.
