I spent ALL weekend shopping for a 19-20" LCD HD tv for a 2nd bedroom, so I can tell you 2 things:

1) This is a good price, but not great. Especially for a refurb (rox0rz!). I bought a Westinghouse HD Ready LCD new for $296 @ Best Buy, with 1 year warranty. And, If I had gone close to $400...I would have had a lot more new choices.

2) The FCC date of 3/1/07 is not the date that all TV's in the store have to have built in HD Tuners. Believe me, there are PLENTY of non HD TV's and HD-Ready TVs and Monitors sitting on the store shelfs in multiple stores. And the employees told me that they'd be there until their stock sold out and the manufacturers finished shipping the stock that they already had. Could be some time before all the old stock is moved out.

Maybe some one can explain to me the real benefit of having a HD tuner built in? I've got the satellite people coming this afternoon to hook up my High Def. I've got one TV with a built in HD tuner, and one that is HD ready...and they both have to have the same HD satellite boxes to get high def programming. So, I'm not sure what the practical benefit is to me. I know that the built in tuner will allow me to get over the air HD broadcasts....but I doubt that I'm ever going to want to put up the special antenna that will let me get those broadcasts. Just like I haven't gotten regular TV broadcasts over the air in like 20 years. And, even if I did, aren't those just local HD channels, not the extra ones that satellite offers?

Is there new technology coming down the pike that is going to use the built-in tuner in a more integrated, practical way? If not....I'm not sure what the benefit is if you end up having the satellite/cable boxes attached anyway.

I believe it's for over the air HD channels. I'd be trying to get them at my house since they're free, but so far no antenna has been able to pick up any. Satellite doesn't offer my local channels in HD. It would also apply to digital over regular cable without a cable box I think. Basically for the new stuff into the future you'll need one of these if you don't have a TV with built in digital tuner:

- Satellite box
- Digital cable box
- Digital tuner box

That's if I'm understanding it correctly. I know a lot of people have cable service but only regular cable (no box). I think those are the ones that need to be most concerned with getting a TV with built in digital tuner.

digital tuner on your tv wont help you with your cable you will still need the digital box from cable company i think. Dont know of any cable without the box anymore.

only for over the air

I have the 32 inch version of this LCD in my bedroom and I paid $3200 for it two years ago, this one was about $799 back then. It has the best picture quality I found among all of the LCD's at BestBuy and that was important to me. Deep blacks, accurate color and quick response for my PS3 (thanks Woot!). So now this little guy is going to look great mounted in the back of my HUMMER for tailgate parties!

Yesterday's woot was better than this.

I, like many others here, will never buy another TV that has a built-in DVD player or VHS. I've had too many of the players die on me and when that happens, it's damn near impossible to fix. Nice price, I do need a new TV, but I'll pass.

You are correct. If you will be getting your digital/HD from a satellite or cable box, there is no need for a built-in ATSC tuner. That would only be for over-the-air broadcasts -- which, I agree, are not something that the average Joec ares about any more.

That being said, all I want are the networks in HD. Currently, there is no legal option for me to get them. The nearest tower that broadcasts digital is 50 miles from me. With a deep fringe antenna, I can sometimes pick it up once in a while -- but, that is only one network at best. I currently cannot get, say, ABC in HD no matter what I do.

Stupid, outdated DMA law crap...

The only benefit is for those that want OTA HD signals. Anyone that wants premium content from a Dish or Cable network will continue to use a settop box...until the CableCard standard catches on and that's in more TVs anyway.

Not really. If all you would use it for were consoles, you can probably get something cheaper. Heck, you could get a decent 20" LCD monitor for around $200 and just use VGA cables (at least from the 360 -- I assume that there are VGA cables for the Wii, but I don't know that for certain) and you'd be fine.

Pass, night all.

HD in 720p is 1280x720. This TV supports more than that. The intelligent thing to do would be to not use the extra pixels and just show it in full 1280x720. If they are scaling the 720p to 768, then, yes, I agree with you. I guess I'd be hoping that they were not dumb enough to do that...

Brightness and contrast ratings would help and a built-in DIGITAL tuner would allow you to get NBC,ABC,CBS,FOX and a few other over tha air HD broadcast for free so you don't need to pay extra from your satellite provider. You need to live within a reasonable distance, about 25 miles, of the broadcaster but the HD antenna does not need to be mounted outdoors is small and you can buy one for $10 to $30.

The over-the-air HD broadcasts are not compressed the way they are over cable or satellite. Having a HD tuner is a good thing - you can get a much improved picture if you invest in the OTA antenna and pick up the local networks that way.

Johnny LaRue was a chain smoking, hard drinking washed up former star that would do just about anything to stay in front of the camera. He would do various small time productions, like a Mr. Science show where he made coffee, or an exercise show, working out by opening the fridge door, Dining with LaRue, LaRue by Night, there were quite a number of these bits if you search out old SCTV stuff.

one day my computer die.....had to reformat /reinstall....i caN'T WATCH DVD while doing re-install because my LCD TV does not have built in dvd.....i had to move my laptop from the other room to get this setup......

and oh...my wife always complain that computer is too noisy when she watch DVD on my 32" LCD TV/monitor while in our bedroom.........

Thats exactly my point. If you had had a seperate dvd player you wouldnt have had that problem. My parents have a combo dvd/vcr about a year ago that is a bit finicky. my seperate player that is vintage 97 is still going strong without any problems.

REF: From http://www.electrical.bureauveritas.com/fcc-faq-digital-tv.html

"......Is there a phase in or grace period on this March 1, 2007 date?

No. They take effect on that date. The rules ban import and sale across state lines, including internet and catalog sale. Retailers can ship within state warehouses to retail to clear inventory. Retailers cannot import TV’s without digital tuners, even if they have taken ownership of them starting on or after March 1, 2007. ..."

Ever wonder why there are so many Toshiba refurbs to sell like this? Toshiba is famous for manufacturing low-quality products that end up having to be sold as refurbs (check any refurb (rox0rz!)-only outlet and you'll see 60-70% Toshibas). Also, this seems a bit steep to me; given that you can now get new 37" LCDS for under 600 (by makers like Olevia), this doesn't make much economic sense, unless you're limited by space to a small LCD. Still, I wouldn't buy it.

Different idea: How about using this as a digital picture frame?

Digital picture frames currently go for about $100 for a 7" screen. If this baby plays jpgs, that's 20" for $350. Seems like a reasonable tradeoff to me (at least until the DVD player breaks).

Just buy it and set it to cycle through photos all day.

And maybe hook it up to the PS2 if the kid wants to play a video game while you watch the Phoenix Suns on the big screen.
