Monk(s) do watch TV but they have to suppress the urge to continually get up from the couch and spray and clean the screen as it attracts dust due to the electrostatic charge. <Groan>

It seems that when I'm searching and researching a product that I'm interested in buying and have the funds availalbe, I pull up Woot at the end of the day and there, right before my eyes, is the product I have been shopping. During my extensive search yesterday for an LCD TV for my master bedroom, I found many. None of which were the correct size and specs. This is the only 20" LCD TV I found with this price. Most were at least twice this much. Yes, it IS refurbished. But, I've purchased many refurbished items in my time and have only had 1 problem Good news is, it wasn't a Woot item.

My only beef here is the short 90 Limited Warranty. It would be nice to see the manufacturer offer a bit better protection.

You rock, Woot!

In response to: Sorry its cheaper to buy a 20" monitor and add a tuner and TV and they'll all be new not refurbs.

Where can you get a new tuner for an LCD monitor as you are suggesting ?

I assume HDTV tuners will be coming out that are reasonably priced, but right now the options are not too good. I was looking at a used Samsung DirectTV tuner, but then you have to hassle with cards, upgrading firmware, some don't have remotes. And it is 3 year old technology.

and new ones seem to start around 170. This would be a hot woot in my opinion. Right now I am looking for a small (10-12') digital TV but there is not much out there. Just a Sony that is > $400

A relatively small tuner and a LCD screen might fit the bill.

By the way, how do I quote the message I am responding too. I see reply but don't see quote.

Nevermind I'm wrong. All the documentation says it has an NTSC tuner, but I called customer service twice and they said both times that it doesn't. I clearly stated NTSC as well. The third time they tried to tell me the same thing, but I pushed and pushed and finally got the correct answer. It does in fact have an NTSC tuner. This is a good buy, getting one.

I'm trying to understand this. Are you telling me I actually will get HD reception? I have two houses, one outside Boston, the other in rural Maine. I get reception that is so bad on air TV is utterly unwatchable in both places. I'm picturing snow and wobbly pictures in Hi-Def. I think it'd be worse. Besides, there hasn't been a network TV show that I'll watch in years. When I was too broke for the dish, I spent about $500 on various types of antennae (and positioning and repositioning them all over the outside and inside of the house) trying in vein to pull in a picture. Then I realized that was like a year's worth of DirecTV.

I read in the WSJ recently that over half the folks who by a HD TV have failed to sign up for the service or put up an antenna.

The on-board HD tuner is an expensive piece of junk to most users. I wish there were more options without it.

There is no snow or fuzziness in HD, you either get it or you don't. A built-in tuner can save you on the local channel fee from your cable or satellite provider and over-the-air HD looks better than anything you'll get from cable or satellite at this point.

I watch very little network television, but sports such as the NFL and NASCAR are stunning in OTA HD.

Then you sir need to get your eyes checked out. I have a tv literally the size of a piece of standard printer paper, and I can read everything absolutely fine. And I can even read things like the subtitles in Lord of the Rings just fine, which is even smaller. Don't lie to these innocent people like that. My opinion to that person, just go out to a best buy for a bit, and find a tv of the same size, and make the decision yourself, because, obviously, opinions, and vision abilities, vary from person to person.

I had an Aiwa 20" CRT TV with 3 DVD Player built in. The DVD player went bad. I continued to use the TV without the DVD Player but it always bugged me because the broken player had a front loading tray. Despite my bad experience... I ordered this Toshiba DVD/HDTV because the DVD is progressive AND it is mounted on the side where you won't view it normally. If the DVD goes bad... I can hook up an upscaling to 1080i DVD player to it because it has a HDMI and a Componet Video Inputs (plus 2 standard video & 1 S-Video). So long as the picture looks good I will be happy whether the DVD eventually breaks down or not. I have no doubt it looks good in Wide Screen HDTV... I just wonder if it will look acceptible hooked up to my standard cable coax.

Several people have mentioned needing a cable box, but is the box really needed or will cable plugged directly into the HDTV set work just as well except for the premium channels? I'm thinking for use in the kitchen or for the kids.

I believe I have this at home as a TV only unit (I was also leery of the built in DVD player). The TV and the remote is great. I have it inside a cabinet in the bedroom.

Someone asked if you could wall mount it... you can but not like a flatscreen (though it is only 2-3" thick). I believe the stand its on will rotate 90* and the stand could be mounted on the wall quite easily... would probably stick out 7-9 inches. You could also ditch the stand... but I dont remember a way to mount it on the wall flat (ie. it having holding orafices that you could used).

NTSC stands for National Television System Committee. ALL televisions have a system tuner depending on the country they will be used in. NTSC is used in the U.S., (PAL in Europe, etc). There are multi-system TV sets that will work anywhere in the world as they are switchable to whatever signal that country is using, but anything in the U.S. MUST have NTSC

Actually, now, anything in the US must have an ATSC tuner. There is some argument that there are exceptions: such as if it does not have an NTSC tuner, then it doesn't have to have an ATSC tuner either (i.e. it can just be a monitor with NO tuner).

I don't think there was ever a requirement that it had to have an NTSC tuner. So, I'm not sure your "MUST" was accurate in the past either. You could ship a non-tuning "TV monitor" just fine, say, a year ago.

But, today, anything imported into the USA or shipped interstate to be sold to consumers must have an ATSC tuner. (Again, given possible exceptions of "no tuner" which a few people seem to still be trying to argue, although I see no exception for it in any of the official documentation.)

The on-board DVD player that nobody seems to like is DIVX certified - plays back those .avi's that fell from the sky and landed on your hard drive. Just burn them to a plain old CDR, and they play back at 720X576. Admittedly not 1080p, but a sweet feature, nonetheless.

Just so EVERYONE knows you do not need a "special" antenna to pick up hi def broadcasts just a regular old 75 ohm antenna will do. At least that is what the engineers at the tv station i work for tell everyone.

littlequincy wrote:I spent ALL weekend shopping for a 19-20" LCD HD tv for a 2nd bedroom, so I can tell you 2 things:

1) This is a good price, but not great. Especially for a refurb (rox0rz!). I bought a Westinghouse HD Ready LCD new for $296 @ Best Buy, with 1 year warranty. And, If I had gone close to $400...I would have had a lot more new choices.

2) The FCC date of 3/1/07 is not the date that all TV's in the store have to have built in HD Tuners. Believe me, there are PLENTY of non HD TV's and HD-Ready TVs and Monitors sitting on the store shelfs in multiple stores. And the employees told me that they'd be there until their stock sold out and the manufacturers finished shipping the stock that they already had. Could be some time before all the old stock is moved out.

Maybe some one can explain to me the real benefit of having a HD tuner built in? I've got the satellite people coming this afternoon to hook up my High Def. I've got one TV with a built in HD tuner, and one that is HD ready...and they both have to have the same HD satellite boxes to get high def programming. So, I'm not sure what the practical benefit is to me. I know that the built in tuner will allow me to get over the air HD broadcasts....but I doubt that I'm ever going to want to put up the special antenna that will let me get those broadcasts. Just like I haven't gotten regular TV broadcasts over the air in like 20 years. And, even if I did, aren't those just local HD channels, not the extra ones that satellite offers?

Is there new technology coming down the pike that is going to use the built-in tuner in a more integrated, practical way? If not....I'm not sure what the benefit is if you end up having the satellite/cable boxes attached anyway.
